Growlithe was my first pokémon, but Totodile that I earned at the fire academy has been more present with me." There was something about Route 118 that reminded Martin a little of home. Although there were no beaches in Castelia City, the city's wharves carried the same sea air. The smile on his face was unmistakable, even more so when he finally met Elise again.[break][break]

"You look spectacular, Milady." He made a point of praising the glamorous combination his friend was wearing. Unlike her, the only difference between what Martin wore in Mauville and what he is wearing now is that as usual he has his shirt open-chested, showing off what he is most proud of: his advantageous pecs. The tanned, muscular torso is as intense as his own fiery hair.[break][break]

Although he gestured in a way that she thought was referring to his pectorals, it was actually about the Shiny Emboar standing next to him. Things around here are pretty gray thanks to the herd of pigs wrestling on the ground. In a mixture of flames, ash and fury, Martin was taking every possible precaution not to be a target for the Emboar. Hoping to get at least one specimen, he launched a Poké Ball in the direction of the one who was most distracted among the chaos.[break][break]

Unfortunately, time was short for Martin and despite his father not being present there was a whole psychological pressure surrounding the boy. He had to turn down Elise's offer with great regret, but assured that there would be other dates for the pair now that they have each other's phone number.[break][break]

"A race?" he retorted a bit confused. Perhaps the gym challenges in Hoenn were a little different than those in Unova. He also thought that he never got to challenge anyone... he was never interested, his life was always focused on being a firefighter. "Then you must be a very skilled trainer! Let's battle one of these days!" Croconaw looked at him excitedly.[break][break]

Captain Morales must be a great person! What little Elise brought Martin was enough to get him excited. He's been thinking a lot about his activities as a Ranger trainee these days... Slateport is an interesting city, especially for the beach which makes him very happy and reminds him a bit of Castelia City, but Martin also feels that maybe it's time to let go from comfort or nostalgia so that the journey in Hoenn has its own meaning.[break][break]

"W-wait a sec...ROYALTY?! You're actually a princess?! For real?!! DAMN!" Martin's clear shock at hearing this news made him scream in the closed room, earning certain looks for it. Then he calmed down, still a little embarrassed and very surprised. "So I wasn't a complete idiot calling you 'Milady' hahaha."[break][break]

Elise would answer to him about where she was stationed at the Ranger base. Evergrande City has never actually been visited by Martin, he has never even heard of it. "Interesting! Just by the name it must be a very beautiful place. Well, I did my enlistment at the Slateport base. It is currently the city where I live with my father and where he works as an engineer too. Hmm... but hey, i tend to be a free spirit i go where adventure takes me!"[break][break]

In fact, Martin was just trying to get rid of his father's stern gaze. Since coming to Hoenn, the relationship between the two has not been the best. His father needed to make this change of region even though he didn't want to internally, while Martin thinks he has "finished" his dream of graduating from the Academy of Firefighters. It was a simple reason. For a man who admires someone who has the courage and determination to face the dangers of someone else's life, Martin expected a more composed response in that regard. However, Elise was sensitive to bringing part of her story into context as well, something that made Martin reflective... "Younger sister, hm? Should I ask about her or would that be too impolite?" He thought that asking about Elise's sister would be too invasive for a first contact between them, so he preferred to stick with another topic for now.[break][break]

"... A-ah, yes! Of course! Helping pokémon is always a big responsibility and it makes you very proud to be a Ranger for it!" He said scratching his blond hair. "Well, I decided to become a Ranger because I don't want to be just a firefighter... I want to explore other fields of expertise in rescue, you know..." Thankfully, being with Arcanine in the cave, it wasn't that cold for Martin. The heat that the canine pokémon exhaled was enough to keep warm. Rumors of a Poliwrath swarm were what brought Martin to the Shoal Cave, he figured such creatures might be useful to his future rescue team.[break][break]

"Look how many of them..." in fact, there were many boxing amphibians punching the characteristic ice of the cave. It was dangerous to stay there too long because of the shards of ice bouncing off each crushed block. "Good luck to me!" he said, just throwing a pokéball at the "closest" specimen possible. With all that chaos going on it was best to remain unnoticed.[break][break]

Croconaw was much happier now that he had gotten an ice cream cone. As for the taste... Elise doesn't have to worry, he eats everything! Even still embarrassed by the request, Martin could continue the chat with the beautiful girl while she and her Froslass enjoyed the frozen delight.[break][break]

After all this exchange of initial information Martin really wants to continue the conversation and accept her offer, but he also doesn't want to make a bad impression by not being able to pay for the ice cream.[break][break]

"Ahn... I don't have any money, sorry." he'd rather be honest than have to come up with some excuse to leave. "I would love to continue the conversation, I believe we can be great friends as we have a common service."[break][break]

Croconaw's growling stomach broke the chatter again and again.[break][break]

"Look... since we're here, would it be too much if I asked you to buy him an ice cream? I'm really sorry to be asking you this, you don't even know me well..."[break][break]

For Martin, that whole situation of interest in impressing the young royalty was disfigured when he started to treat his pokémon partner's needs as a priority.
