Ever blunt and to the point, Emma remains expressionless. Her winrate, which seemed to be a very popular topic, was nothing to be proud of. But she wasn't participating in order to win or to find any sort of fame. Rather, that would have an opposite effect- it would draw unnecessary attention to herself.[break][break]

The Umbreon's ears flatten, bouncing off the shoulder of the other before a CONFUSE RAY hits him dead-on. This close, it is inevitable that he would be under siege. But he has to do something. Confusion only adds to his pain, but he lunges to grapple his mirror image anyway in a TAKE DOWN, harming himself double in the process.

Emma exhales, long and thought out, holding onto the feeling of her heart beating heavily in her chest. Skyler pats the ground and she makes her way over, stepping past the muddy spider that, like a dog, begins to shake herself out.[break][break]

She chuckles, lowering herself down to sit next to the woman. With a deep breath, she takes in the smell of the rain, relieved that it slows down. The sun is warm against damp skin and clothing, offering comfort.[break][break]

What is she doing?[break][break]

The earth rumbles, drumming against her fingers. Agitation keeps her warm, and she gasps as she breaches the surface - moments after Skyler, probably.[break][break]

Emma rolls onto her back and then pushes herself to her knees, then her feet. The MUDDY WATER slaps at the Galvantula, drenching it. Her Pokemon remains below them still, clinging to the rocky wall with desperation so as to not be pushed off.[break][break]

In retaliation, Galvantula sprays an ELECTRO WEB as she, too, manages to reach the top. [break][break]

Lycanroc bites, then bites down harder. Ultimately, that would be her undoing. [break][break]

At first, heat pours from her fangs. Unfortunately, that heat quickly turns to ice. She freezes practically from the inside out, the flame dying in her throat.[break][break]

The SHEER COLD takes her, forcing her to pass out immediately. From above, a commentator shouts from the sky that MELODY MIRO wins, and Emma stiffens.[break][break]

Funny how straight her neck looked.

There was something undeniably tense about the situation she found herself in. As if she had stepped into a nest and the hive was sitting in silence, vibrating with energy and not yet ready to devour. She was the giant hornet venturing into the bee's nest to scout, only to be trapped by a hundred tiny bodies with one sole purpose to burn her alive.[break][break]

"It's a water-type, meant for the sea. I would be nervous, too."[break][break]

But she isn't. Not really. The hitch in her throat is from uncertainty, not from lack of confidence. [break][break]

Her fingers bite into the cliffside, her grip painful. Her nails protest from the effort, but she holds on and pulls herself up anyway. Now was not the time to exhibit weakness. [break][break]

Galvantula exudes an unnerving BUG BUZZ as they ascend, glancing to the sky and the dark clouds. Thunder continues to roll, lighting them up with white-hot light. Rain beats down harder as time goes on, turning her hair to ink.

Her voice comes across stiff, perhaps a little bit awkward. It is a weak attempt to connect in some form or offer some sort of conversation given she had left him hanging. People were so keen on pursuing conversation, even if they were looking into the cold, dead eyes of a woman with nothing else to live for.[break][break]

Emma inhales.[break][break]

The SANDSTORM whips up hot sand that stings on contact, buffeting everyone involved even on Emma's side of the field. But she is ruthless, and now is not the time to curl up and defend. Slurpuff has never been a fighter, but it charges an ENERGY BALL that pierces the haze of sand, hot in pursuit of the Krokorok.

Weakness is not a state she preferred to express. She had never given any opportunity to expose her belly, for fear of the teeth that waited to rip her open. She could survive anything- but not that.[break][break]

And to hear her spider lay down, figuratively belly-up, was devastating.[break][break]

The ground shakes with the impact of every single rock thrown. She counts them, feels the vibration reach her all the way on her side of the field. Emma exhales.[break][break]

And the Ariados does not get back up, unconscious beneath its tomb.

She slips just slightly, taking a breath and pausing to reposition and calm the flutter in her chest. Without eyesight, the stakes were higher. Right now, she was relying heavily on her sense of balance and sound, her sense of touch. [break][break]

"But I also believe that a strong mind is subjective."[break][break]

Above, rain begins to trickle. Along with it, the crackle of electricity, of energy, of doom. It rumbles, malevolent in the darkening clouds. Thunder rolls and Emma feels her heartbeat quicken. Her clothing grows damp and the rain drowns out the noise. Another sense, lost in the wind.[break][break]

Her grip tightens, and she can feel her Galvantula trembling with anticipation.

That was... creative and inventive. And it works- because with his increased resistance to the ice storm, Sandshrew is unable to keep up. The battle rages on and on, but ultimately, Empoleon succeeds as the victor. [break][break]

And eventually, it appears that Empoleon falls, too.[break][break]

The hail storm stops and the players on the board are replaced. Emma has a beautiful Lycanroc sprinting across the sand rapidly now, already riddled with marks and bruises from the thick of a fight. It lunges for a FIRE FANG.

Emma Wolfe knew every single name, every single face, every single possible(for the most part) thing about nearly everyone in Rocket's ranks. She had access to intel of various kinds - some of them her own. [break][break]

She knew exactly who Jayden Cross was, or at least, who he pretended to be. [break][break]

What resemblances the kid thought he had with her though- those flew over her head. Call it being self-absorbed, if you want.[break][break]

The woman is stiff and uninviting, and although she cannot see Jayden offer a polite half-bow, she can hear the fabric of his clothing ruffle and shift. She inhales, chooses her words, offers no further indication that she is the least bit interested.[break][break]

But she is, because he's chosen a Pokemon she is familiar with, one who wastes no time in diving into the thick of the fight. It is far more confident even than her own. A mirror image is struck by the FEINT ATTACK, wincing against the slight and stepping back to recover.[break][break]

Her own Umbreon hesitates afterward, sizing up his opponent. She is smaller, faster, but just as delicate, just as capable. [break][break]

He bounces forward, light on his feet, to charge into her with a QUICK ATTACK.

It's too comforting.

It's too familiar, too real, too easy.

Too easy to keep expecting him to be watching her, in return.

For once, she doesn't just disappear.

Instead she rises at the same time he picks up her plate. Her wine is abandoned and the tightness in her chest feels suffocating.

Yer running, ace.

Yes, she is. And from her own home, too.

"I am heading out.. for a bit. Don't wait up."

The broken front door is forgotten, as are the dishes and the fact this is her house, not his.

She may be changing, but some things haven't.
