Like Melody, Emma pulls an umbrella from her person. It unfurls with a pop and she tilts it backward. The hail beats against the tarp, but the sound is sort of soothing, if a little more violent than the rain.[break][break]

Sandshrew doesn't budge as the Empoleon runs forward, wings aflap, to strike at him. Rather, he tucks himself into a ball again, enduring each and every blow as it rattles him to his core. The sheer strength and size of his opponent was enough to whittle him down. He had to be more cunning.[break][break]

And now that it was hailing, it was the perfect time to be just that.[break][break]

The Sandshrew tucks and rolls away, and the hailstorm intensifies into a BLIZZARD.

Emma glances down at the tracker in her hand, glancing up on occasion to look down the street. [break][break]

So far, she has deduced that the target is the young man and his Lillipup. It is the one person she has been following for some time with the help of the device in her left hand and the meditating Xatu on her shoulder.[break][break]

Now, however, it was time to wait. It was too public, too risky to approach now. She was an assassin, an operative who worked in the shadows. Emma exhales, tilting her head, thinking.[break][break]

"Excuse me! I think you dropped something."[break][break]

The woman kneels to pick something up, giving her Xatu ample time to stare down the man's Lillipup. Perhaps.. it was trying to use some psychic influence to agitate it.

It may look like minimal damage, but that was only because, like a bird, Emma's Pokemon hid their pain. [break][break]

The Sandshrew slams against the Empoleon's side, dropping like a metal stone into the sand. When he untucks, however, he finds that the opponent is merely standing there, sharpening its blade arms and performing a weird dance.[break][break]

Emma does not hesitate, however, in her climb. To slow down now or feign stupidity now would be even odder. So she continues, pushing through the sarcastic, heated laugh that bubbles in her chest.[break][break]

The Galvantula will occasionally make a noise or brush against her, aiding the blinded woman up the cliffside.

There was a reason Emma kept so few Pokemon - and a reason that so many of them had died during the Blackout of Slateport. If they didn't listen, didn't catch on and didn't adapt during their training, they didn't last long.[break][break]

Ariados had lasted the longest by far.[break][break]

Electricity sparks across the ground, super-charged by the damp sand. It catches Ariados by the leg, dragging it to the ground with a great thud. Now immobile and paralyzed, it seems the THUNDER WAVE was a success.[break][break]

Every time he laughs she is reminded of something that feels out of reach. Something dangerous and unpredictable that spoke of security, of intimacy, of home.[break][break]

Something she couldn't have. Something she couldn't allow herself to have.[break][break]

Emma is tugging her shirt over her head, hands reaching back to pull her hair through. Her eyes scan the room in search of something, but she finds it wrapped around King's wrist. The woman blinks, eyes slowly drawing their way back up to meet his gaze. [break][break]

She approaches, holding her hand out for him to return the hair elastic.

Emma rolls her eyes, dramatic enough that he may feel her eyelashes fan his skin. [break][break]

"Hm."[break][break]

Her thumb idly strokes his chest, gentle against the scar. For a moment, the thought occurs to her to inquire about it. She refrains, naturally, because those questions always lead down a rabbit hole of dark thoughts and unfriendly memories. Best to not.[break][break]

He had his demons just like she had hers.[break][break]

The mention of food, paired with the friction of his hand stroking her arm brings her attention up to study his face. She begins to pull away, dark hair spilling against his skin and her own like pools of ink. [break][break]

"That's my cue."[break][break]

Unease returns to settle in her chest. It feels like an anxious, desperate butterfly trapped in her throat. She lets his arm drop from her arm and she makes her way around the room to dress herself.

Just for good measure, and to maintain some semblance of control, Emma readjusts the knobs. Not enough to notice, but enough that she knows she set them.

Otherwise, the woman leans her lower back against the island and idly sips her wine. The smell of seasoned and spiced chicken rolls in, overpowering the smell of whatever she'd been burning. She purses her lips, impressed.

And then she glances up at him and the plates hes set for them. There is something sad, she thinks, in the way he phrases his statement.

"I like basic."

Emma was a woman of many talents, but the art of cooking oft eluded her.

She had lived nearly her entire life on the run, or having food prepared for her and seldom crafted with her own two hands.

And she'd never stayed in one place long enough to warrant learning. Pots and pans, eating utensils, even cups or plates weren't objects she had ever possessed. Borrowed, maybe, but never kept.

Living with and loving Gavin had been a window into a normal life.

Losing him had been devastating.

Evidently so given she had nearly burned her brand new house down in less than a week.

Emma frowns, watching him as he works. At some point while he prepares the food, she refills his glass and waits to offer it to him until he turns to ask her something. His ask interrupts her train of thought and she blinks at him.

"Sure."

She sets both glasses down delicately before searching the countertops for the bread. The toaster is nearby to drop the slices in one after the other. Carefully, she turns the knobs farther than she should.

Black toast, anyone?

Her eyes are squeezed shut, her body perfectly still - too still - against his chest. She focuses on the rise and fall of his chest, the rhythm of his breathing, anything but the guilt that trickles in at the back of her mind. [break][break]

Instead, she tries to hold onto the ache, the relief, the warmth. [break][break]

"So.. the only time you're quiet is when we're fucking. I might have to take advantage of that."[break][break]

The woman's voice is barely above a whisper, but it is delivered with an amused growl meant to push buttons. Even despite the sarcasm behind her tone, Emma sighs against his chest and tucks her cheek just a little bit closer.

Discreetly, Emma watches the sweet interaction between him and the Skrelp. The Pokémon blows bubbles at him, wiggling its tiny body in glee.

She watches as she pours her glass, filling it a bit more than anticipated. The bottle thus against the counter when she sets it down.

"Do whatever you want."

She gestures indifferently to the kitchen as a whole.
