For starters, today was one of those off days when he didn’t have any challengers scheduled for the day—in fact he was on the back of his blue-plumed Braviary, Kyouya, just relaxing up in the sky when suddenly—

The avian Pokémon let out a surprised screeching noise the moment he caught sight of something that had very nearly gouged his eyes out; which made him look around—on high alert.

The direction of the voice was from somewhere down on the ground, and with an imperceptible gesture, the dual-type then came soaring down; once he was low enough, he then leapt off the Braviary’s back before he looked over at the person who’d tried to attack him.

Oh, shit, was this what had meant about Rocket trying to extend their reach?

“You know, trying to knock someone out of the sky is piss-poor manners, not mention a bad way to introduce yourself,” he began as he straightened up.

“Is there something you want from me?”

The disappearance of Miss .

Both of them were familiar with it, however neither had found enough clues as to piece together what had happened to her during that stretch of time.

(Was it safe to presume that she was already dead, all things considered; along with the extended amount of time that had passed since then?)

Was he really this much of a forgiving person to let things slide?

(The most recent instance was of him letting his partner ’s sordid past just go past him; while the other man had expected him to lash out and make him leave, Alex wasn’t that kind of person…)

“Thank you… thank you for being honest with me.”

Even if there was still a little nibble of betrayal that hung between the two of them, this would be just as much to take in; to comprehend, to digest—and to understand.

“Humor me, then—why did you cast you lot with them in the first place? Was there… were there promises made to you, of the world being free under… under their control? I’ve seen some of the propaganda, you know.”

For one thing, it reminded him of radio interference—only, grossly magnified to the point it made him want to grind his teeth; because damn the sound was extremely uncomfortable…

His fingers were already curled around the Cherish Ball he carried in his pocket as he arrived back here, once more, with his fellow Gym Leader.

“I agree with you,” he nodded quietly—because the other time he’d come here with , they’d gone into the darkness.

There was no way in hell he wanted to go through that shit again, not even if you paid him a million Pokédollars!

In a show of what felt like déjà vu, he followed where his friend’s voice was coming from.

“Y-you don’t need to tell me twice!” he called out, blinking as hard as he could manage because holy shit, why did the dark feel like it was pressing into his eyeballs? This was even worse than the time he’d almost been axed by a group of Litwick when he was a kid!

To make matters even worse, there were grossly-distorted words echoing in his mind; it felt like a thousand little eyeballs were following their every move.

“There you are,” he gasped once he was able to pick out his friend’s silhouette from the darkness.

“To answer your question as honestly as possible? I… I don’t know. But… we have to keep going… I’m trying to figure out something. Something that I encountered in—in here the last time.”

Trouble would come for Miss Elise not even a few moments into the final home stretch.

While the rumbling thunder and lightning flashes would provide illumination through the torrential rain, the fact that not only rain, but mud would be raining down the both of them as well!

A rather powerful splattering of mud would obscure the Galarian royalty’s flight goggles; which would force them to come to a stop in mid-air while the rain and mud continued to pour down.

The longer they delayed, though, the more the mud would obscure their view of the course ahead—along with the ominous rumbling of thunder up ahead, would alert them to get a move on and not stay idle too long!

After all the insanity that they’d flown through, the very last obstacle would be—

An oldie, but a very familiar goodie.

(For this was also the same one that he ended ’s challenge with.)

From high octane adrenaline, to one of technical skill and finesse—a long-welcome respite from three successive rounds of insanity:

The aerial rope crawl.

Only this time it looked to be twice as large as its previous iteration, which he noticed right away and cracked a knowing grin. Maybe it was because of the time that two Golurks flew through it, however the size of the last obstacle would look to be the standard moving forward…

For our greenette challenger, passing the last few flaming rings would prove to grant her a lead—but for how long?

Considering that the myriad variety of ropes strung out and across to form dizzying patterns would mean cooperative work between rider and Pokémon to clear the final obstacle, how far along would that lead last?

How did he find himself all the way out here?!

He was pretty much fucked, all things considered—because the only other time he’d come out here was with his partner , and they were looking for Flying-types…

What was with the mist rolling in around the immediate area?! Were there going to be Litwick coming out of the gloom?!

While he was a child of the cold and winter, he sure didn’t mind a cup of hot chocolate while trying to find his way back to civilization…

The hedges that had manifested around the Pyre area surely were strange… but then again when was Hoenn normal?

He had no idea what Azelf looked like, to be fair. His collection of legendary tales were mostly those from his home region of Unova, with some additions made from Johto as well as Hoenn…

“Were you able to get a—” he trailed off, before realizing that the other could not physically see; however since they were accompanied by a Ralts, then—

“Did you see what it looked like in your mind’s eye?” he corrected himself, struggling to make himself heard over the wind; before the facsimile of the Tornadus’s sibling flew off in a pissy huff.

He was about to look for a way how to get them to dry land when his companion’s question caught him off-guard.

“I have no idea. I hope it will find some place to land…” he trailed off, before looking over at his Pokémon companion who had the shadow of a scowl on his face, before the expression on his features returned to a neutral one.

“That… that was the brother of my companion,” he replied.

“Tornadus has, at least according to the tales from my home region of Unova, a brother who he always argues with. When the two are sighted, thunderstorms are stirred up by their presence and will continue until they disperse to another location.”

It wouldn’t take long before the final obstacle for this obstacle course would appear—however, it would not come easily.

For our fair-haired challenger, a ricocheting blast of last-minute Bullet Seeds that had been fired would snag on her Noivern’s wings, and cause their flight pattern to list off towards the left before another rebounding ricochet would very nearly strike her close to the face should she not be careful!

After wind, and scorching heat—the final obstacle would be…

Rain.

Lots of it, a centralized thunderstorm brewing across the home stretch—but what made this different from the other variation of his non-trad course was that the rain would be coming down, along with mud to obscure vision!

Hope you brought a change of clothes…

There was a reason why this particular obstacle was one of the more dangerous ones—not only were the rings swinging in random directions (no relying on a pendulum here!), the added bonus was that they were literally on fire, which made the timing all the more trickier.

Over where the greenette was flying, they would clear the first few rings with ease, however a sudden shift in wind would throw the next few off-course.

It was a good thing she’d switched mounts at the last second too—anything fire, when combined with a Bug-type, would definitely fry the poor thing’s wings to a crisp!

The current ring that they were traversing would suddenly shift direction mid-flight, and if they weren’t careful, their Flygon’s tail would catch fire if left unchecked!

Up ahead, he’d managed to fly on ahead—however, the loud buzzing noise from his own Flygon was alerting him that something was up…

Okay, that fear of drowning and the deep were literally fucking justified, the way the both of them drowned.

He… he was never going to approach the ocean again. Only swimming pools for him from this point forward!

Either way, the moment he thought he expired, well, would whatever they were in just… choose to eject them outwards and then start over?

…unfortunately, that was not going to happen, at least for this iteration. For the next time he would gain consciousness…

“Oh, you’ve g-got to be kidding me!” he continued weakly, quickly hanging onto the railing and looking over where his companion was also… suffering seasickness.

The world was really out to get them, huh?!

“What—Azelf?” he went on, blinking as he looked up and realized that…

Why were the storm clouds behaving the way they—he had to do a double-take to make sure that Hideo was still there, before realizing that he was staring into the face of… the brother.

“What… what are you doing h-here?” he chattered, quietly retrieving the Cherish Ball he had with him, and much like how he would go answer the front door whenever he picked up a DoorDash’ed order…

“You—your brother…”

And there they were, the brother of wind and the brother of lightning. The Wandering Stormbringer sizing up this… this reasonable facsimile of the one he considered all but a sibling (in more than one sense of the word).
