Night slash hits safeguard and there’s a shatter of sparks tinkling like glass amongst the high grass. The offending human pulls out a knife as though to defend against the rock monster with scythes for hands. Luke doesn’t know if he should give the boy points for being brave, or stupid.

Cassandra ignores the human, deciding swiping at the Duskull with another night slash was more important.

Meanwhile, behind him, Gita is getting hugged by a Froslass, the icy chill of the dual-type causing her yellow plumage to stick to its body. Thrashing and flailing, the Squawkabilly does what it does best: squawk.

And while the uproar may not affect the Froslass, it sure does a good job of getting Luke’s attention. He turns, and sighs heavily, releasing his Elekid while he reaches for his phone to call for help. He’s not DNR and this is not his business, but he’ll at least stick around to make up for the ruining of his one peaceful day.

Luke gets the feeling that something is wrong before it actually all starts to go pear-shaped. Something stirs amongst the Gardevoir, and they release an aura of alarm.

There’s a faint clicking noise and a spray of pink glitter, and then horrible, nails-on-chalkboard shrieking as something begins to wreak havoc amongst the gathered Pokemon.

Luke clicks his tongue, turns his camera off, and goes about packaging the expensive equipment back up. Almost as an afterthought, he throws a Pokeball out.

“Deal with it,” he admonishes the Kabutops who emerges. A blink and Cassandra is gone, charges through the panicking Gardevoir and aiming a night slash at the human standing amongst them, and their Klefki.

Unfortunately for MAKI YUKIMURA, Lukan is not the type to go anywhere without backup. So as she sits and lurks, something lurks above her… something yellow, temperamental, and very angry to have been woken up from her nap.

Gita the Sqawkabilly does what she does best, screaming down at Maki and her Froslass, before launching from her branch vantage point in an aerial ace.

The Gardevoir mill about peacefully, soft tones of their lilting hums filtering through the quiet autumn air. Luke checks the aperture on his camera and sets back in his blind, snapping away.

It is not often in his hectic life he gets to experience moments of such calm, though he is stoic by nature and rarely lets his temper get the better of him. It has taken long years of practice to have such a hold on himself.

So the others might certainly try and get a rise out of him. Only time will tell how successful they will be.

He is not, necessarily, on League payroll. He is not an officer of the peace and he is not particularly beholden to Rustboro as a city entity.

But the Gardevoir gathering is peaceful. They do this, this time of year, in Paldea, as well. Something about the placement of the sun and the last burst of positive psychic energy before the dark season, or so scientists speculate.

So he’s set up a little blind and been watching them and taking pictures because despite their human-like appearance they are Pokemon and it’s not as creepy as it sounds, actually.

So MAKI YUKIMURA and jayden cross are not the only ones hiding from the Gardevoir.

Luke took the bad juju comment with, he thought, an appropriate amount of tolerance for the malarky that it was.

“You’re not cute enough to be a lamb.”

He was generally considered (by most, if not all) to be a well-controlled man who had his mental and physical acuities well in hand. But this place made him nervous in a way that nothing had in many, many years-- so many years as to be forgotten, or more like rediscovered, like an ancient and horrible treasure, long buried, and equal to its splendor only by the terror it evokes.

It was not very comfortable, is the point.

He swallowed and dug his fingers into his own palms.

His unease was proven to be well-founded when a slew of ultra beasts descended upon their location; Gita was out and airbourne in moments, doing her best to distract and deter them from attacking her human and his friend.

After a brief respite, it was back to the action.

Luke could’ve sworn the air tasted purple.

The pulsing, thrumming heart at the center of this blasted place beat with the rhythm of a living thing, and the energy that rose off of it in harsh waves felt like a bass note deep in his chest. Only utilizing the mental fortitude he possible could muster kept him in place.

He would have liked to not come, but here they were.

Ozni Adebayo had talked him into this, but Luke was not going to be the helpless, self-sacrificial meatshield for this endeavor.

The repetitive heartbeat and foul energy made him cross. “Get up here and help me.”

The natural geothermal heat produced at Mt. Chimney, coupled with it being, literally, the hottest month of the year, meant Luke’s workouts were going to be extremely difficult, and extremely satisfying. He kept the heat exhaustion at bay by thinking of the lovely dip in the sea he was going to have quite soon.

His date-- Luke was using the term quite loosely-- had dressed for the occasion, with a green jester’s motley and some lovely tights that did wonderful things to his legs. Luke had also put some effort into his outfit, with a traditional forest-green tunic that cinched over the breast (or, you know, tried to, in his case) with dun-colored suede pants and black knee boots, dulled from use.

They made quite a pair.

“These are a nice touch.” Luke brushed his fingers over one golden bell, and it tinkled with the press of his thumb. “At least, I won’t lose you in the crowd.” His smile hitched up with a humor just scant of mocking.

“Well, allow me to extend a hand in welcome. I’m very honored to take your… renaissance virginity.” He grinned his wolfish grin. “And I will, in fact, be getting on a horse. I’m taking part in the joust, though you’ll have to pretend the helmet is a cowboy hat.”

That would be a bit later, though. First he was going to finish this beer, and get to know his guest.

Nomi’s admission that this was only her second foray into this strange hellscape earned her a reluctant if approving, hum. “Well. My compliments to how prepared you are, as you seem a veritable expert.” Maybe it wasn’t that she was so good. Maybe it was just how completely out of his depth he seemed. But he was hiding it well… he hoped.

He watched Nomi with an unhidden expression of curiosity as she examined the grafitti, eyes shut in thought.

“Necrozma,” he repeated, as though tasting the word. “Such destruction… are--,”

His question was cut off as the signal tower gave another bright flare, and the shadows around them began to writhe with the undead. Nomi voiced that there would be time to answer questions when safe inside, and Luke nodded, swinging an arm round to herd both the young woman and the Kalosian towards their assumed location of safety, his fatherly instinct to protect emerging. “Go. I’ll cover us.”

And he did, alternating between blasting at the dead with Zavala’s incinerate and his Kabutops’ vicious scythes slicing through heads and sending the reanimated bodies falling limply to the ground.
