As Stink seemed to war with herself, Avery turned back to the shorter Taillow hunter.

“My name is N--,” she almost gave her codename, then remembered, this was entirely legal and, actually, encouraged. “--Avery. What’s yours?”

She was crusted in salt, she couldn’t feel her right arm, and she felt fairly assured she was turning red from all the sun. but by god she was going to land this stupid magikarp splash.

She turned it into a little game. She’d dive down, get a clam, then swim back up and bop Squirter like some sort of button or diving bell, yell “HONK!”, and then dive again.

It would keep her entertained, if only for a little bit.

“‘Sfine,” she said, voice evening out as she became more aware, and came back to herself a little more. Well, as much as she ever was back to herself.

For some stupid reason, what snapped Avery back to reality was Clover’s apparent unfamiliarity with Statler and Waldorf. “You know, like, the Muppets?”

(If they don’t have Muppets in Hoenn, I don’t want to be here.)

They watched the little pinata-bird run up and bitchslap a Taillow across the beak.

“It can be hard when ya don’t know when your next meal is coming.”

She thinks back to rolling Kantonian plains, paddies of rice, drip-drip-drip goes the poison from a little glass vial.

Avery stands, shaking her head, to clear the cloud of memories.

“Yessir. Easy money, that. And I brought my anti-birdification beam, Stink. Say hi, Stink.”

Stink looked like she wanted to do anything but.

She wobbled one way, then the other, then back again, smacking her forehead on a lowhanging branch. Stink hovered in the background, making the Pikachu : o face.

“Yeeeessirrrr, never better,” she said, rubbing at the reddening spot on her skin. “Dancing is fun and everyone should do it.”

She fell on her ass in the grass. “Eugh. Does dancing normally make you wanna barf?”

The Taillow gathered above and made shrill cries, sounding like hecklers.

Avery picked up a rock and threw it, scattering the birds.

“No comments from you, Statler and Waldorf!”

Good wasn’t a person’s deeds. Good was, like, their whole thing. Yannow?

Avery lifted a cheese-coated fry up for the K-shaped being, wondering how on earth it would consume. Phage, right? That was the fancy word for it. Or something.

“Listen, you haven’t done any defecating, nor have you shown up at her work and tried to burn it down.” She twitched the fry. “Uh. I’m assuming. Anyway, that means you're good in my book.”

She glanced down at her nigh-empty tray.

“Ugh, prolly gonna have to, after this, huh?”

She plopped her chin on her now-healed palm and looked up at Nina.

Pretty, she thought, absently.

“I’m really good at dance dance revolution,” she said, because that was the first thing that popped into her head. “Maybe I could make a new game. Bank robbery revolution.”

But! Sitting around moping wasn’t going to get this shit done any faster. She sighed, clapped her hands on her knees, and rose to standing in one smooth, long-legged motion.

“Whaddabout you? You like this kinda thing?”

It seemed like easy work. Walk through a berry patch and smack some Taillow.

The trees were swarming with the things, in a way that was kind of eerie.

Stink brought one down with a ferocious thundershock.

“Ho ho ho,” she cackled, smacking the foliage with a stick to scare out more Taillow, “looks like I’m Tippi Hedron now!”

She was so focused on causing chaos that she didn’t notice the Oricorio’s teeter dance until she walked right into it, and before she knew it, she was imitating the silly dance, knobby joints knocking all over the place.

The Scyther appeared out of nowhere, a green smudge in the misty air, and when its blade struck Dinner Plate it sounded with a deep gOoOoOoOng.

The bug staggered back, one scythe holding the other, like a human who’d hit their funny bone.

“Dinner and a show,” Avery snorted, tossing a safari ball.

The Gible locked eyes with them and charged like a shorts-wearing neo-toddler on an early game level route.

Dinner Plate’s hypnosis became a screen that the beast ran right through, and as it fell asleep, it dropped onto its stomach and slid through the mud.

“Poetic, kinda,” Avery said, tapping a Safari Ball on its head fin.
