"Oh, wow," Kae replied, eyes wide. Her fingers drummed on the table. "That's... very generous of you." She'd been prepared to fork over a bunch of cash for a bike... and now here was her employer, who was not only offering to help get her set up with a new ride pokémon, but also to assist with lessons and the like. It was... almost too much. In fact, she was nearly ready to reject the offer on impulse, not wanting to impose...[break][break]

But the temptation of an easier commute was too powerful. The rejection died in her throat, and she slowly nodded her head, smiling a little brighter. "Thank you. I would really appreciate it."[break][break]

But before anything else, Thomas wanted to know if she'd prefer something land-based, or something that could fly. Upon hearing this question, Kae blanched a little, sitting up straight. "Land-based! Definitely... land-based." She chuckled, scratching her head. "I have... a thing when it comes to heights." She paused, for a beat. "By which I mean... they will cause me to pass out." She joked, pushing past the embarrassment. "Do you have any suggestions on species?"

On one quiet November morning, a girl sat next to a pond just outside Petalburg City, having just come to terms with a horrible truth: she was... really bad at being a pokémon trainer.[break][break]

For much of her life, Kae had watched other people walk the path of a pokémon trainer, but she'd seen it as an option for herself. But now, she was in Hoenn. She'd started a new life here, one where she could be anything she wanted to be. And considering her recent employment as a pokémon caretaker, well... what could she say? She'd been inspired to... well, give her best shot.[break][break]

Things had not gone well so far.[break][break]

For the past hour and a half, Kae had been traversing the wilds of Route 102 with her floragato, Viri, in search of... something. A new pokémon, ostensibly. Unfortunately, all she'd been able to do successfully was scare away anything within several hundred metres. At one point, she'd gotten close to a hoppip... but when she'd gone to throw the pokéball, she completely missed. Like an idiot. So yeah... she was pretty bad at this.[break][break]

Still. She was having fun. A lot of fun. More fun than she could remember having in a long, long time.[break][break]

"Alright, Viri," she said to the grass-type, now she'd gotten over the embarrassing-as-hell hoppip incident. The floragato, lying on his back nearby, turned to face her, opening a single eye. "Let's get back to work. We're not leaving here until we successfully capture something or other." That was the dream, anyway. If she held herself to that promise, chances were high that she'd be doing a walk of shame to Petalburg in the dead of night.[break][break]

With that, Kae pulled herself up off the ground, dusting off her jeans. She pulled her letterman jacket a little closer to her, suddenly feeling the brisk autumn breeze. Viri let out a loud, full-mouth yawn, before hopping up to his feet. But... where to begin? Feeling a little lost on how to proceed, Kae settled for walking back down the main path towards Oldale, Viri keeping pace at her side. As she walked, she kept a keen eye out for pokémon, not wanting to miss her chance.[break][break]

"I wonder if there's manuals for this," she asked aloud, her mind beginning to wander. Viri shrugged.

The rest of her stroll was mostly uneventful.[break][break]

After successfully defeating that emboar, Kae had needed to take a small break, the fright having rattled her. Plus, she needed to feed Rei some treats for a job well done. Truthfully, she was a little embarrassed that the marill had basically beaten off the opponent without any input from her. Some trainer she was. Still, she couldn't deny that it was pretty cool watching her marill beat off a pokémon far above her weight class.[break][break]

For a while, Kaede and Rei sat off to the side of Route 111 and watched the world go by. Briefly, they witnessed an onix tunnelling its way through the desert, and it was enough to take her breath away. But soon enough, it was time to return home. Though a small part of her had been hoping to catch a pokémon now that she was out in the wild, she was satisfied with the day's events.[break][break]

Besides, Hoenn was her home now. There'd be plenty more opportunities to come.

“Ideally? A desk job would probably best suit my skillset,” Kae replied diplomatically, a smile still on her face.[break][break]

What limited skills she had, anyway. Her résumé was pretty sparse, with a five year position at a local coffee shop in Nacrene City and… little else. She certainly didn’t have the qualifications for a tech-based position, and while she didn’t have much idea on what a maintenance position would look like for a pokémon gym, she doubted it would be something she’d be particularly good at. Although… She sat up a little, straightening her back.[break][break]

”With that said,” she added, clearing her throat. ”I have been looking into pokémon care positions in the area, as it is a field I have an interest in.” Or at least, she thought she did. Caring for pokémon sounded pretty cool, especially without the pressure of being a proper trainer. ”Are there any positions available which focus on pokémon care?”

"Um... sure. Ice would be great."[break][break]

Once he'd settled in on the opposite end of the table from her, Thomas seemed curious about her aforementioned commute, asking if she'd walked all the way from Mauville. A little embarrassed, she nodded. He followed this up by stating that he could get something set up for her to help out.[break][break]

Kae started at this, sitting up a little straighter. "Oh! Um..." Immediately, she felt the urge to turn him down, but she also recognized that not having to walk in the mornings would make things much easier on her. "I... was just gonna buy a bicycle," she admitted, chuckling.[break][break]

Thomas then seemed to get an idea, and he quickly shared it, asking if she had an experience riding a pokémon. "Riding...?" Her eyes grew a little wide, then she shook her head. She remembered seeing people who did stuff like that, but she'd never worked up the courage to do it herself. "No, not really. None of my pokémon are big enough for it anyway," she joked, rubbing her nose awkwardly.

Following the instructions given to her by the receptionist, Kae made her way towards the gym leader's office. Before she made it there, however, she briefly stopped to admire the racer atop the Arcanine. Arcanine had always been one of her favourite pokémon, even since she was small—but this one was unlike any she'd ever seen. She'd heard about some of the strange distortions in Hoenn, but even still, it was different to see it in person.[break][break]

The two of them looked so free on that course together.[break][break]

Eventually, she arrived in the gym leader's office. She was a little thrown by all the Raikou memorabilia, but she didn't let her ironclad smile slip for a second. The gym leader himself was a young man, maybe around her age, with dark hair. Her age. Somehow, that stung more than she was anticipating. When she thought about just how accomplished and successful he was, all with the same amount of time as she'd had, it was like swallowing glass.[break][break]

She didn't let it break her mask.[break][break]

"Thank you for having me," she replied, taking a seat where he'd suggested. When he asked about her intentions, she nodded in confirmation. "That's right. Ideally, one of your support roles... I'm not much of a trainer." She chuckled, trying to make it clear that she was joking, rather than being self-deprecating. Well, she was technically doing both, but he didn't need to know that.

Kae was only mildly surprised when an audino answered the door, instead of a person.[break][break]

It was a pokémon ranch, after all, so she supposed it was only natural for there to be pokémon about. Still, she hadn't been expecting one as her first point of contact. Still, she offered the audino a warm smile as it welcomed her, before tentatively following it inside. She took a moment to gather her bearings, observing her surroundings, before following it to the kitchen.[break][break]

A man stood to greet her as she entered. Thomas Benoit, if she had to give a guess. He looked... different than she expected. Not bad, just different. She gave him a smile and a nod as she entered, perfectly pleasant. "You as well, Mister Benoit," she replied. Was it Monsieur? Oh well, too late now. "But please, you can just call me Kae. Most do," she added with a chuckle.[break][break]

Accepting a seat when offered, she was about to decline the drink when he offered... but her parched throat flared up, as though it were reminding her. "Um..." she tapped her fingers nervously on the table. "Some water would be nice, thank you." She was halfway tempted to offer to grab it herself, but she tempered the impulse—it was his home, after all. She didn't want to look like a weirdo.[break][break]

"Sorry if I'm late," she added, though she hadn't checked the time to confirm. "Truthfully, I'm currently commuting over from Mauville, and I didn't... um... think to get my transportation sorted before the first day." She looked down, embarrassed. It was an awkward thing to admit, but if she had the option, she'd rather appear stupid over rude any day of the week.

Kae had never considered herself much of a humanitarian.[break][break]

Not that she like, disagreed with the idea of humanitarian aid, or anything. What kind of monster would disagree with that? She'd just never really personally participated in it. She'd always been the type of person to like, donate when prompted at a retail register, or get sad when hearing about bad things on the evening news. Little things like that.[break][break]

But she was in a new era of her life, and she wanted to start off doing like, good things. Things that helped people. So when she'd heard about a project headed by League Rangers to help clean up Fallabor Town, she'd made yet another impulsive decision. She'd never been to Fallabor, nor had she ever done any environmental clean-up, but she wanted to try.[break][break]

When the day arrived, it was... exactly as expected. Just as advertised, Fallabor was a town covered in a semi-permanent layer of soot from the volcano to the south. She walked through the center of town, wondering where she was even supposed to start. At her side, her floragato Viri padded eagerly, though he seemed rather reluctant to get his paws dirty.[break][break]

And then, out of nowhere, she was blasted in the face with a WATER GUN.[break][break]

Sputtering, Kae stepped back, completely disoriented. Blinking her eyes in an attempt to clear them, Kae ran a hand down her face, wiping some of the leftover water away. At her side, Viri looked equally as shocked, but his surprise soon faded into mrows of laughter, much to her chagrin.[break][break]

Once Kae had gotten her bearings, she took a look at the man and the wooper who had... attacked her? A small part of her wanted to get angry and call them out, but a much larger part of her... did something very different. "I'm, um... sorry?" she said. In her heart of hearts, she knew she'd done nothing wrong, but apologizing still felt like the safest move.

Kae wasn't anticipating an attack. Maybe she should have been.[break][break]

As she turned in the direction of Route 112 and Lavaridge town, Rei riding eagerly on her shoulder, she was blindsided by the sudden appearance of a massive, boar-like pokémon. Emboar! She'd never actually seen one in the wild before. They were fairly rare, as far as she was aware. Unfortunately, she didn't get too much of an opportunity to admire it... because it had turned its attention straight towards her, anger flaring on its face.[break][break]

Thankfully, Rei leapt from her shoulder, getting between her and the emboar before it could charge. The emboar let out a snarl and threw a swing at the small water-type, but Rei countered it with a nimble dodge. Her tail then began to glow bright blue, and she spun around and swung it, unleashing a wave of water along with it. This water slammed into the emboar, causing the beast to let out a snarl of pain.[break][break]

Clearing deciding the two of them weren't worth it, Emboar turned and disappeared among the rocks of Route 112.[break][break]

Kae took a long, deep breath, the encounter having startled her out of her wits. She then flashed Rei a thankful smile. "Glad you were with me, Rei," she praised her marill, who waved her off with a bashful grin on her face.

The marill appeared in a flash of white light, bright smile on her face. Immediately, she leapt up into Kae's arms, letting out some happy trills. Kae suppressed a smile, gently rubbing the top of her head. How long had they been friends now? A while, to say the least. Rei was her first pokémon, back when she'd wanted so badly to be the best trainer ever. For like, a summer.[break][break]

The marill settled on her shoulder. Then, Kae started forward again.[break][break]

At some point after Kae had dropped out of school, she'd started this habit—Taking Rei for jogs with her. Ordinarily, she tried to do it bright and early, and also in proper workout attire, but her entire rhythm had been thrown off by the move. But something deep within her screamed that she needed to move, to burn off some energy. So now, she jogged.[break][break]

It wasn't long before Kae passed her first interesting sight: a slugma, burning brightly near some rocks, its body oozing and bubbling. "Woah, check it out," Kae said, admiring the creature. Slugma were fairly common in Johto, but basically unheard of in her part of Unova, so it had been a while since she'd seen one in person. Still, she left the creature to its devices, not looking to disturb it on that day.[break][break]

"Wait, stop!"[break][break]

Kae rushed towards the patch of berries, chasing after a tiny yellow menace. This was just her luck, too. Apparently, one of the fun benefits to her new apartment building was access to a plot in the rooftop berry patch. Kae had never been much of a gardener. She'd never been much of anything, really.[break][break]

But something had spurred her into giving this a shot, and she'd gotten to work planting a few berries. She couldn't say it was the most interesting job in the world, but she was somewhat enjoying the routine—walking to the top floor of her building, examining the berries, watering them. And now they were being stolen. By a sneaky little thief.[break][break]

Viri, her floragato, caught up before she could. Moving alongside her, Viri leapt up onto one of the berry trees, before launching over the mawile and landing on the other side of it. The mawile slid to a stop, holding a few of Kae's hard-earned berries in its hands and glaring at the grass-type.[break][break]

It was then that Kae caught up. "Ha!" She wheezed. "Gotcha!" But... what did she do now? She hadn't exactly planned this far. Did she knock out the mawile? That seemed cruel. But she couldn't just let it run off... Making a snap decision, Kae reached into her bag and grabbed an empty pokéball. Tossing it at the mawile, she watched as it disappeared into red light, before the ball fell to the earth.[break][break]

With a long sigh, Kae walked over to the pokéball, fishing it out of the dirt. "I'm not sure if gardening is for me," she said. She looked to Viri, whose whiskers twitched in amusement. She shook her head. "Yeah, yeah. Laugh all you want."[break][break]

Well. She had a mawile now, she supposed.

Though she'd admittedly seen rather little of Hoenn as of yet... Kaede was pretty sure that the areas surrounding Verdanturf Town was her favourite. It was hard to beat lush fields of emerald green, or that brilliant open sky. It reminded her of Johto's Route 39, with the pastoral farmlands and the crisp, fresh air that said her mind at ease.[break][break]

It almost made waking up at 5am worth it.[break][break]

With her recently-acquired job at Verdanturf's Duvet Ranch, Kae was officially splitting her time between Mauville and Verdanturf. Which wouldn't really be a problem, if she didn't need to start walking at ungodly hours in the morning to get to her shift on time. Briefly, she considered whether it would be worth investing in a bike. Mauville had good ones, she'd seen them. But that was an expense she couldn't afford right now, not for a job that she might not even keep.[break][break]

Fuck. She was basically already walking into this job with one foot out the door.[break][break]

Dawn was just cresting over the horizon as the ranch came into view, casting an pink glow over the whole sky. Briefly, Kae took a moment to admire it. The grounds were... large. She could see what looked like fields of crops, as well as some early-rising pokémon wandering the pastures. There as a cute little pink building, standing out against the otherwise neutral tones of the rest of the building, and then the large ranch house. Which was her destination, in all likelihood.[break][break]

Donning a pleasant smile like a suit of armor, Kae walked down the path towards the house. She wasn't sure what to think about this Thomas Benoit. Their interview had been pretty brief and entirely over the phone, but she'd apparently done enough to sell herself to him, considering he'd offered her the job. She'd googled his name and found out that apparently he used to be a member of Hoenn's Elite Four, which was sort of a crazy backstory for pokémon rancher. But still, she had no clue how that would translate to his actual personality.[break][break]

Walking up the porch, Kae approached the door, before gently rapping her knuckle on its frame. "Hello? It's Kae Tsuda," she called, looking around. "We spoke over the phone about the job?"
