The Pachirisu accepted the biscuit. When Sasha held out a Safari Ball, the Pokémon accepted that, too. [break][break]

After collecting her new companion, the woman stood and contemplated the camouflage-patterned capsule. "It's weird, Grimmsnarl," she said, causing the dual-type to perk up his ears. "I never used to imagine I'd befriend Pokémon to capture them. Battling was all we knew, wasn't it?" [break][break]

Despite her words, she smiled at her old friend. Grimmsnarl nodded, uttering an agreeable sound. [break][break]

They continued on, until a Klefki floated into view. Sasha exchanged a look with Grimmsnarl, then sighed and nodded in turn. "Go ahead." [break][break]

The Bulk Up Pokémon charged, swinging a HAMMER ARM at the Klefki. As it reeled back, dizzy, the woman threw another Safari Ball.

Before long, Sasha and Grimmsnarl happened upon a wild Pachirisu. The squirrel darted close to them but stopped short a few feet, her nose twitching restlessly as she sniffed their foreign scents. Sasha's heart melted instantly. Crouching, she extended her hand toward the Pokémon. [break][break]

"Would you like to come home with us? I have a treat," she said, her other hand slipping into her woven tote bag to extract a small, plastic container of biscuits. [break][break]

The mention of a snack perked the Pachirisu's ears. She wandered closer, slowly, as Sasha opened the baggie and removed a biscuit filled with rawst berry jam. After breaking off a chunk, she extended the smaller piece to the squirrel.

"I guess... I used to really admire my father. I think I still do. He was so knowledgeable, and his mind was so sharp. But he was kind and always encouraged me."

"Grimmsnarl. He's my oldest companion, and I trust him with my life."

"Probably the one I tell myself every day."

"I draw. Mostly for myself, but if others like it too, then I'm happy to know that."

"I... don't know."

"I'm still trying to figure that out."

"This is a strange question. Sootopolis, I guess. But I'd rather see it freed from Team Rocket's grasp."

After buying a ticket to the Safari Zone and receiving three Safari Balls, Sasha walked down the trail unaccompanied by any Pokémon of her own. Only when the trees obscured her figure from the front entrance and she'd ensured no other visitors were nearby did she produce a Pokéball from her purse. [break][break]

The scuffs and hints of metal beneath red paint were marks of its age. Nearly two decades old, the unassuming capsule had been part of Sasha's everyday carry since she was a child. Even now, living a different life under a different identity, she never went anywhere without it. [break][break]

Wordlessly, she pressed the central button to release its resident. Light poured forth from the vessel, coalescing into her Grimmsnarl. Upon seeing his trainer, he uttered a low growl. [break][break]

"Hey, old friend," Sasha said softly, reaching out to pat the Pokémon's arm. Grimmsnarl leaned into the familiar touch. "I know we don't do much together anymore, so let's enjoy a little stroll. You can stretch your legs." [break][break]

Together, they continued down the dirt path.

Sasha hummed in soft reply to Mr. Navidson's roundabout explanation for his usual work. She kept her focus on the sweeping, her expression neither judgmental nor revealing of inner thoughts. For all he knew, she was oblivious to the news about him. [break][break]

(She wasn't.) [break][break]

"Sasha's just fine," she replied, glancing up and offering a small smile. "I like being around Pokémon. Sometimes they're a handful, but they want love and affection like anyone else." [break][break]

The Torchic from earlier hopped over to peck at Sasha's shoes. She gently shooed it away with a nudge of the broom. [break][break]

"And you have to be especially careful with the ones who are injured or traumatized. One wrong move can set them off, even if you never intended it. You have to think to yourself: instead of forcing my expectations upon it, how can I meet it where it's willing to meet me?" [break][break]

The woman glanced over her shoulder at her companion. "It really makes you stop to think, and sometimes that's exactly what I need when I'm busy with work or other life stress. To slow down, stop, think."

"Oh, mostly people and landscapes," Sasha replied. Taking out her phone, she opened the Photos app to show Benji a few examples of her digital drawings. "Sometimes I like to paint with oils on canvas, but other times I enjoy digital painting on my tablet." [break][break]

After he'd had a chance to thumb through a few, she rested her phone on her lap. "What do you do for work?" she asked. [break][break]

Judging by the condition of his hands, he didn't make a habit of regular manual labor, which left obvious careers like construction off the table. His height and build suited desk work as much as a more ambulatory career, so she couldn't rely on that characteristic for any educated guesses. [break][break]

Was Benji the sort of man who was clumsy in many situations except for his job? That was possible, too.

As Mr. Navidson shared each uninspired name, one after the other, Sasha's embarrassed expression slowly transformed into mild confusion. She glances uncertainly at the giggling Chimchar before offering her associate an awkward smile. [break][break]

"So, do you volunteer here often, Mr. Navidson?" she asked as she lowered Litten to the ground and searched for her broom. A thin layer of ash still covered half the floor, swirling about their ankles when kicked up by the young Pokémon. [break][break]

As she moved, Sasha's eyes flickered briefly to the Elite Four's cane before focusing on her task at hand.

With her hands now free, Sasha picked up Litten, who immediately started sniffing her clothes as if she had secret biscuits stashed inside. "Thanks," she said to Mr. Navidson. [break][break]

At his innocuous question, a blush colored her ears and cheeks. She knew he did not mean it, but the inquiry reminded her of her differences in habits. Hugging Litten to her chest, she admitted, "He doesn't have a name. I don't have a habit of naming my Pokémon. But none of them seem to mind, either." [break][break]

As if to emphasize her statement, Litten meowed and rubbed his head against Sasha's cheek.

"I'm glad you're here, too, though I wish we could have reunited under less sandy circumstances," Sasha agreed, her body flushing with the warmth of friendship. [break][break]

At the mouth of the cave, Clefable chirped, gesturing outside. Curious, Sasha stood and walked over, pleased and surprised to find that the sandstorm had abated. A relieved smile spread across her face. [break][break]

"Saskia, it stopped! We can leave." Sasha stepped onto the sand-covered, raising a hand to shield her eyes from the glaring sun.

As soon as Sasha saw the blank look in Saskia's eye, she knew she shouldn't have asked. Saskia had barely gotten through her internship when the two worked together at Sasha's old workplace. [break][break]

Instead of commenting on it, however, the blonde focused on answering the brunette's question. "I did. I don't have anywhere else to go," she said. Then, after a short hesitation, she added, "Well, that's not true. I could go anywhere, just like you did. But I've grown used to Hoenn." [break][break]

She shrugged. [break][break]

"It would take considerable effort to uproot myself and get used to a different place. I'm not as adventurous as you are." [break][break]

That last part she said with a smile flashed Saskia's way. Sasha held absolutely zero animosity for the younger woman or her lifestyle; she was content with the slow life she had cultivated for herself.

Perhaps some people would have been awestruck and giddy to be in the presence of one of the Elite Four, but Sasha kept a level head as she swept a broom around the enclosure. At the sound of Mr. Navidson's voice, she raised her head, wiping sweat from her brow with a hand. [break][break]

The man did not seem formidable to her at all, not with the small Pokémon clinging to him. [break][break]

"Of course! I'll be right there." Setting down the broom, she walked over to a locked cabinet where staff stored food and snacks. Selecting two biscuits, she brought them over to the eager Pokémon, who immediately left Mr. Navidson alone to hop into Sasha's arms. [break][break]

She huffed a small laugh as the Chimchar and Torchic snatched the biscuits from her hands, then scampered off to enjoy them by a nearby pile of coals. "Gluttonous little things." [break][break]

A plaintive meow diverted her attention to the floor. Her Litten wove between her ankles, looking for a snack of his own.
