"i won't make it easy on you!" lisette promises herself more than she threatens the other woman. battling had never been her forte, and even as she engages a league member in combat, she thinks it never will be. [break][break]
the absol moves with such precision, lisette almost forgets to bark out a command ahead of time, herself. "eclair, try to dodge!" it would prove useless as the sharpened horn makes contact with the psychic pokemon, anyway. [break][break]
the gothitelle shrieks with pain, and her trainer does all that she can to maintain a sense of calm. "you're strong," lisette admits to the other. "and confident, too. just my luck to run into someone that actually knows what they're doing." [break][break]
the rocket grunt glances around. at the very least, the league woman seems to have come alone, so lisette won't have to worry about backup. "let's flatter them, shall we?" gothitelle claps once, and a shower of light and sparkles adorns the absol in an attempt to confuse it. [break][break]

"so, you're the culprit." lisette discovers the cause of her garden caretaker's worries as of late: the cud-chewing giraffe pokemon that has invaded her garden. (in actuality, it is a shared space with other people, but lisette likes to think of it as hers whenever she is by herself.) [break][break]

the farigiraf looks hungry and desperate. lisette thinks that regardless of what happens here, its life can only improve after being caught. a strong pokemon like that might even make a good weapon for team rocket to use, someday, when it is back to full health. "alright then," the young bellamy decides. "you're coming with me." [break][break]

a few teasing hits from both her gothitelle and zorua should do the trick. the baneful fox, in particular, is eerily reserved despite everything. lisette looks upon its blue fur with something like adoration. even the small cuties will someday grow up into a big bad killing machine. she can hardly wait for that day to happen. [break][break]

lisette's expression remains the same, but her gothitelle giggles quietly beside her, sharing in her amusement at clover's words. it would make sense that most people are not accustomed to the art of divination, or anything that might be seen as 'witchy' or 'occult.' not that she would ever use those words to describe the sense of familiarity behind such practices, but the meaning still stands. [break][break]

"okay. even modern decks have a lot of energy behind them, so one this ancient has to be stronger." it makes sense to clover and lisette, and that's all that really matters at the end of the day. "ooh, good form." a small giggle escapes her: this really is just like when her grandmother would do readings for her in the past. the positioning and shuffling of cards is oh-so-familiar. [break][break]

as clover offers the first choice to lisette, the young bellamy thinks extra hard on which of the three cards she'd like to pick first. her hand hesitates in the air for a second, before pointing to the card tucked in the middle. "this one, for who i will be." then she takes the card from clover's hand, keeping it face-down.[break][break]

"i didn't know that, either." she had assumed all fast pokemon knew how to use quick attack and other similar moves. or, maybe it was more accurate to say that she never gave it much thought to begin with. but as she glimpses into the world of riding and speed, lisette realizes there is a lot about this world (and the pokemon in it) that she doesn't know. it makes learning about it all the more richer and satisfying. [break][break]

but before she can thank the master of faster for his knowledgeable truths, the pyroar use double team, and the world changes in a way lisette would never expect it to. whirling colors and faded afterimages, the wind practically leaving her lungs when she feels the saddle drop from underneath her, only to be jostled back into place when the pyroar's spine flexed upward once more. [break][break]

she would definitely be bruised later on, but it wouldn't be an unwelcome experience by any means. if anything, it reminds her of a simpler time in her life — a freer time. [break][break]

it's not something she'll forget anytime soon. [break][break]

truth be told, lisette doesn't know whose dorm this is, only that whoever it belongs to, hasn't come back once in the last two weeks. [break][break]

and in the world of vagabonds, rascals, and team rocket members alike: finders keepers, losers weepers. as her grandmother had once said, the earth belongs to everyone. better that someone use this dorm than to have a spare room go to waste. [break][break]

which is all a grand setup leading to the main characters and conflict: lisette, clover, and a deck of ancient tarot cards. when clover had first mentioned their acquisition to lisette, the young bellamy immediately agreed that they had to see its ancient might in action. lisette had countless tarot readings and other fortunes told in her youth (her grandmother always was an odd sort) — this would be just like those times. [break][break]

"so... have you ever done this before?" there's no mistaking the slight hint of excitement in the girl's soft voice. sitting cross-legged on the floor, she holds her stufful close to her chest as though it were a real plushie. and her most cosmic and astral pokemon, gothitelle and minior, are also hovering nearby, both of them interested in the ancient tarot deck that clover has yet to unleash. "this is probably just as powerful as whatever they have in those laboratories in the north wing, you know." [break][break]

when josh calls out to her, lisette's eyes are wide as she tries to focus on him even a little. the speed, the juumps, the pokemon, the breathlessness of it all... she's at a loss for words. all she can manage to say at first is, "yeah! lots of fun!" [break][break]

at the mention of these fire-type pokemon being ranger pokemon, too, lisette looks down, and notices the logos for the respective organizations on the saddle. not only are these pokemon raised to be competitive, but they're helpful in a pinch. team rocket aside, anyone would be so lucky as to have pokemon like this at their side. [break][break]

and lisette's dreams are starting to blend with reality. she thinks she will remember the roaring winds and the sound of her own laughter, together with josh's voice, for a long time. "i didn't know that!" she yelps in reply. at the mention of double team, lisette hesitates, but only for a short moment. "double team! no kidding? yes!" she has gotten this far already — why not see them at their full potential? [break][break]

if she wrecked their nest. that, and together with the sheer size of the espathra, leads lisette to believe that the story had been concealed to her from the start. though she wasn't there to watch the beginning of the conflict, she managed to stay there until the end. perhaps the ariados wished the espathra would have died, but that's not what happened. [break][break]

hearing that this pokemon is simply energetic in its ways is still a great relief to lisette. and the fact that a strong pokemon has indebted itself to her could only ever serve as an asset to team rocket. this kind of pokemon would be better off handed to someone else, but... [break][break]

but it was okay to be selfish sometimes, right? "i... i see. i don't know what to say." lisette reaches for the espathra properly, now, happy with the evaluation made by both the human doctor and the pokemon one. that, and the confirmations from aubre only serve to reassure lisette that what she is doing is right. the espathra seems to react well to the affectionate gestures, and lisette starts to think that the espathra is big enough to ride. that it's strong enough to stand on its own. [break][break]

sort of like the punchiness of a really good nicoise salad. repetitive and asinine thinking, but the type of thinking that occurs when lisette has decided a pokemon should stay in her company. what good would it do to exist in this world without a name, after all? "i suppose you have a point. thanks for seeing me on such short notice, then." the first admission of how busy the clinic must have been, and how lisette may or may not have been keeping the staff on their toes when everyone is wanting nothing more than to leave. "in the best way possible, i hope i don't have to 'see you' too much." a lame attempt at a joke, but lisette says it with such a straight face, it couldn't be read as anything but earnest. [break][break]

as for the yeast infection, the young woman's nose scrunches up. so that's the strange texture on espathra's toes. lisette would've thought it natural, but — "some cream for that would be good to have." she thinks it's the best course of action, especially considering that once the initial roadblocks are out of the way, a psychic-type pokemon like nicoise would be able to handle herself. [break][break]

which it might be used to doing on its own, anyway. "for the cream, do i just apply once a day, or...?" [break][break]

embodiments of death. lisette is stuck on that descriptor of the wild 'baneful foxes' that have appeared throughout hoenn. such a name excites her. if this pokemon — if it even is a pokemon — is truly a harbinger of death, then perhaps lisette can finally meet her maker. [break][break]

she dresses as though going to a family dinner (though her dinners with her grandmother were never quite as fancy as this): ankle-length frilly white socks tucked into black mary-janes, a baby-doll dress in deep navy-blue with lace at the collar and hem, and elbow-length gloves, soft and supple against her skin. tresses of white hair pinned back with silver hairpins, and a navy-blue ribbon to adorn it all. [break][break]

she is ill-dressed for the trek up mt. pyre, yet carries on as daintily as though she'd been walking around a suburb, instead. while she has caught numerous pokemon (both for poaching and personal purposes) over the last few days, she has with her the six pokemon she'd like to die with the most: her lifelong friends gothitelle, noibat, stufful, and sinistea were obvious choices. the shiny minior that had fallen from a star shower one night near her campground was another obvious choice. and of course, the roserade she'd befriended, who in their last moments of life together, could create a beautiful bouquet with which to walk in the afterlife with. [break][break]

sadly, lisette finds that the embodiments of death are nothing more than altered zoruas and zoroarks. though clearly they are different than the dark-type pokemon, both in appearance and temperament. they are not as tricky or spirited as their dark counterparts. they move with such resigned bitterness that lisette wonders if they were ever truly alive to begin with. [break][break]

"their hairstyle is unique, at least." she tries not to sound deflated as she speaks to her team of pokemon, all of who have various reactions (from relieved to disappointed) that they are decidedly not going to die today. "oh, perhaps they are strong, like zoroarks tend to be. it would be a good idea to catch one, right?" right. she convinces her pokemon to try and round up one of the baneful foxes, and throws a pokeball immediately after the fact. [break][break]

emerging from the woods is another woman, fierce and resolute as she and her absol stare down at lisette with unwavering eyes. the blood-red irises of the absol, in particular, are hard to ignore. lisette takes a step back, mentally cursing in her head. dark types, huh? she glances at her own gothitelle, named eclair, and worries for her. [break][break]

but even if this conflict starts at a disadvantage, lisette won't back down. it's not in her nature to do so, and she has her orders to follow. even if it's futile, she'll put up a fight. "i'm afraid it's not that easy. if you want to go forward, you'll have to defeat me first." [break][break]

lisette's gothitelle stands in front of her, arms raised to the sky as astral energy surrounds them all. translucent stars flicker in and out of sight; lines stretch out and form four magical walls and a ceiling to match. magic room is a move that is more grandeur than anything else, but lisette hopes this will make them look more intimidating than not. [break][break]

"last chance to surrender ahead of time." a bluff, of course. but why not pretend that she is a stronger trainer than she actually is? [break][break]
