"what can i say? i enjoy the challenge." while many often went for strong offensive or defensive units, marcel had gone for the road less taken. choosing a support unit had been refreshing, forced him to really think instead of charging blindly after players or spawn.

and, of course, he was a welcome member of most parties as a result. marcel couldn't say he minded letting others do most of the work while he assisted from the sidelines, mindful of who was low on health, who could utilise the attack boost best, and so on. that, to him, was a far more interesting game.

sending gavin a party request, he then uses DECORATE to boost the man's attack and special attack. "can you handle those two alright?" he asks, nodding towards the two marowak that had appeared.

it's probably best that her trainer isn't here...

someone treads on her tail and vega lets out a fearsome cry, her battle instincts coming through. yet more workers arrive on the scene, this time to calm the pokemon and usher her outside.

eventually, the letters all find their rightful places and order restored to the postal office. there's an obvious reluctance in the postman who places the box labelled 'FRAGILE' before her. vega lets out a chirp.

"never been in a hot spring before?" he manages to ask between laughs. then again, this was emma. he tries to tone down his amusement for the sake of his friend, his eyes twinkling with mirth under the cover of his mask. he hadn't quite manage to take that part of his clothing off, it was probably a permanent feature.

the group closes in around them. a tense silence settles as neither parties make a move--it doesn't take long for marcel to grow weary of the standoff.

"i would've needed a relationship for that..." he grumbles. marcel hadn't had a solid relationship since the death of his wife, given his lifestyle and temperament, he had to grudgingly admit that this wasn't much of a surprise. for a while now he'd been stuck in a loop of half-hearted, casual flings. not that he minded.

before he knows it he's finished his third beer. he grabs a fourth without hesitation. "no it's not a breakup, thanks for that though." he takes a large forkful of cake, continuing his sentence as he chews, "fuck, you made me forget what i was gonna say."

[break][break]joking aside, he has to admit the thought hadn't crossed his mind. there hadn't been much consideration to his suggestion, outside of the aching of his limbs. the realism of these games really was both a blessing and a curse.

he looks at emma, only thinking better of it once it was too late. "i mean, you seem fine," he says as he shifts his gaze elsewhere--a matter of principal more than anything since, when he thought about it, neither of these bodies were their own.

[attr="class","mthread"][attr="class","rocket"]he's halfway through his second beer by the time emma arrives. though his indeedee goes to open the door, marcel gets up to follow it should they be faced with an unexpected guest. call it cautiousness. once he sees emma standing outside, he allows some of the tension in his shoulders to ease.

the table that sits in the centre of his living room is too low for chairs. instead, two cushions sat on either side--marcel had never found the need to place down any more. visitors were an irregular occurrence; groups of them practically unheard of. he slides a can over to emma's side of the table before finishing his own.

he's yet to explain the cake sitting between them: elegant, if veering on the small side (one of the two had to give with his budget, after all). marcel picks up a fork and digs right in. he's only slightly ashamed, and not at all regretful.

[attr="class","mthread"][attr="class","healer"]another laugh rises from the compliment, an involuntary reaction to cover up his embarrassment. he stands. "flattery will get you everywhere."

as if to prove his point, he taps the ground with his staff. LIFE DEW makes quick work of restoring their health points. marcel uses the move a second time, then once more, before their health returns to a level he finds acceptable. it was better to be safe then sorry--who knew what else they would run into.

once the SHIKY SHIELD fades, marcel finds that the forest now looks far easier to navigate through. it appeared the gardevoir had played some part in their struggle--outside of the battle, that is. "now to find our way out of this damn place."

glancing at the cyborg, he feigns a look of innocence: artfully deceptive, entirely convincing. he was good at things like this, by nature of his job. emma probably knew better than to believe it.

he catches a familiar figure in the distance, though it's only once he catches up to it that his suspicions are confirmed. marcel quickly checks their surroundings. "gavin?" he says, "i didn't know you played." they're the only players here--in this part of the desert, at least--no one would overhear his use of gavin's real name.

[attr="class","mthread"][attr="class","healer"]had marcel been a different man, he might have panicked the moment he saw emma hit the ground, but after years of working for rocket, he finds such reactions do not come so easily to him. he mutters a curse once he realises the situation. he uses DAZZLING GLEAM once again, using the seconds it buys him to run over to emma.

the gardevoir, hot on his heels, goes to follow up with SHADOW SNEAK. the moment it materialises, marcel aims a solid kick to its chest. the pokemon staggers back. he wacks it with his staff again as it aims a PSYBEAM at emma, the attack narrowly missing her as a result.
[break][break]with such a high special defence, marcel's sole offensive move was not an advantage by any means, but emma's worn down the pokemon enough that he can see it's on its last few health points. finally, he puts an end to the battle with DAZZLING GLEAM.

once the pokemon has dispersed into nothing, he falls back to sit next to emma's sleeping form. one look at the cyborg was enough to tell marcel he had no chance of lugging emma, metal limbs and all, out of the forest and into safety. so he summons a SPIKY SHIELD large enough to cover the both of them as he waits for her to wake up.

he wondered if emma snored. the thought's enough to draw a quiet laugh out of him.
