"Oi!" Orion's sharp shout of warning seems to startle the bat from its newfound perch, its massive maw gaping at him as it turns toward the sound. "Listen, I respect that you're not out here attacking my Pokemon, but those berry trees were expensive."[break][break]

He knows that the Pokemon likely has zero concept of monetary value, but it can surely detect the ire in his tone. Its stance becomes more aggressive, and the ranger lifts his hands defensively.[break][break]

"Chill out, I'm not looking for a fight."[break][break]

Instead, he rifles through his supplies to find his stash of common berries — leaving out the Pecha, which he'd found most of his own poison-types disliked.[break][break]

"You can have as many of these as I've got on hand, just don't eat those ones, OK?"[break][break]

He sets the berries down and backs off to give the Golbat space.

He's far more comfortable with the subject of the game, and barks out a laugh when Stormy lauds the crowd-control as one of the more imbalanced game mechanics.

"Fucking right?" As someone who didn't normally curse, the expletive clearly demonstrated his own ire. "I should've gone with electric-type, paralysis sucks. There are some really OP ranger builds out there... guess who didn't know that in character creature?"

"I can't stand those damn sky-bridges in Avia, it's way too easy for people to knock you off 'em. Especially for ranger characters, and I'm saying that as a ranger with Long Reach. How do you get anywhere in that place without a full party for protection?"

Invested in the conversation, Orion nods, glad that the game's head-tracking has his avatar follow suit or else it might've seemed he'd zoned out.

"Yeah, there's something about magic or futuristic tech that's just... fun, I guess. Maybe that's why I like this game so much."[break][break]

It was like he was getting the chance to be a Pokemon, instead of just watching his own battle and guiding them through it. It was flashy and fantastical and honestly far too addicting.[break][break]

Kyle rambles about his recommended anime and though Orion's quiet could easily be mistaken for disinterest, he's listening to every word. He's never heard the Elite Four so invested in something before. Kyle, like the councilman, seems to trend toward the more reserved end of the spectrum. It's nice to hear the fervor in his voice.[break][break]

When he pauses for breath, Orion proves his investment by piping up. "I probably wouldn't skip the intros, I love a good soundtrack. Character development is nice, too. I can't stand when a show is strictly fanservice, y'know? Gotta have a good plot or a sense of humour to keep me interested, so this show seems great for that." There's a rustling as Orion grabs his phone in reality to pull up a trailer and bookmark it so that he didn't forget. "Any good cyberpunk recommendations from the 'internet people?'"[break][break]

There's a smile in his voice, humour.

He rolls his shoulders back and lazily approaches the stone. Honestly, now that there's some precedent of what being the 'king' of a kingdom gets you, Orion's not as wildly determined as he had been in the beginning.[break][break]

It was a cool bonus, and he wouldn't say no to it, but he had a feeling it would also paint one hell of a target on his back.[break][break]

When the creature appears, it is nothing like Orion expects. Familiar in its resemblance to a Cofagrigus but foreign all the same, the creature bursts from the wall with a horrifying wail that finds the councilman wincing. The ground quakes and he's grabbed by the arm, pulled roughly to the side in order to escape the quaking of the earth. When he speaks his thanks, the words are swallowed by the rumble of the cave.[break][break]

Orion's Absol leaps into the fray alongside its fellow dark-type, detecting the threat of cracking earth in order to leap out of the way. Espeon endures the quake and offers a helping hand to the Swampert, her psychic energies bolstering the power of a hydro pump that blasts across the cavern and catches the horrific Pokemon off guard.[break][break]

Anticipating the threat of a second watery blast, it protects itself from the follow-up attack.[break][break]

"Do you know what that thing is?" Orion asks of Onus. "I assume maybe it's from Galar, but..."

Perhaps it might seem odd to take credit for one's name; after all, it was a parent who chose the moniker their child would bear to the world. However, Orion had chosen this name for himself, along with the surname. Lykos, meaning wolf.[break][break]

Balder is quick to discern the unnatural nature of the creature, and the councilman's grim nod confirms it. He offers no further elaboration, quietly thankful when the ex-gym leader insists that he won't ask. It's the result of a dark secret that Orion had planned to never share with those outside of the small circle who possessed its 'kin', but a journey into Ultra Space was a twist he hadn't anticipated.[break][break]

"I care for him as best I know how," he confirms, resting a hand on the creature's furred neck. He can feel the tension in the muscles below his hand. "I have no intentions of showing him to anyone outside of... well, whoever comes with us, if anyone."[break][break]

Though he hopes there will be more, it's clear Orion is prepared to plunge into this reckless adventure with Balder alone if he has to.[break][break]

"His name is Percy," he provides. "Like Perseus, or maybe Persephone if he's actually a she. It's... hard to tell."

The animations for the bow probably wouldn't look as cool and flashy thanks to most of them being tied to the arrow he shot, but even a flaming arrow would be pretty cool![break][break]
He makes a mental note to take her advice and train in the fiery kingdom, though they're quickly set upon by another pair of mobs and he has to shelve further thought in order to focus.[break][break]

"I wonder what would happen if I..."[break][break]

This time, when he activates his Mirror Move, he chooses to mimic the mage's Mystical Fire. The tip of his arrow bursts into brilliant flame, soaring through the air and exploding upon impact with the dual-type. It hadn't so much as got the chance to attack before it fell to his assault.

They're quickly joined by a couple of girls — both of whom Orion recognizes. He lifts his hand in a lazy wave.[break][break]

"The one in Lavaridge is supposedly really nice." Orion glances over at Stormy and has his character emote a grin. "I've never been myself, though."[break][break]

He's too shy about stripping in public. Thankfully, this is a video game, although Alec seems alarmed by their cavalier attitude all the same. The councilman laughs, the tail end of it being caught on mic as he unmutes to answer the question.[break][break]

"It was the Baths, sorry." Another chuckle. "Supposedly they're great for regenerating your stats, faster than a campfire. Figured I'd check it out. No need to be so shy, Alec, it's not like this is real!"[break][break]

When asked of his favourite genre, Orion is silent for a moment as he genuinely considers the question. It's more than enough time for Kyle to compose his list and shoot it over, and Orion brings up his UI to enlarge the chat so he doesn't have to strain to read.[break][break]

"Haven't watched any of these, but I've heard of quite a few..." Thankfully he wasn't completely ignorant of pop culture, just mostly out of the loop. "I've heard really good things about the last two."[break][break]

He's probably heard spoilers for them as well as a result, but thankfully things like that tend to go in one ear and quickly out the other.[break][break]

"I like divergent stuff I guess." Considering it too broad, he elaborates, "Like, fantasy, or cyberpunk. Drastically different from real life." He won't admit it, but it's because it turns it into a form of escapism. Anything to draw him away from reality. Maybe that's why this game has sunk its hooks into him. "Not particularly picky on whether it's comedy or drama or whatever, I just like a good aesthetic. You think either of those two," referring to the last in the list that he'd mentioned, "would hit the mark?"[break][break]

He's also really into romance, but that's too embarrassing to admit.

Orion smiles at the offer, quickly scrolling through the emote wheel to make his avatar smile, too.[break][break]

"Appreciated; I just might take you up on that. This game's better with people you know." They'd only just met, but that was better than playing with randoms. He'd heard tell of players dropping from random parties and killing their teammates at the end for extra loot. Hopefully Alec wasn't the type to do something like that. "I'm always cool with a fifty-fifty split on the loot."[break][break]

Some players, especially the skilled ones, might be more greedy than that in exchange for the company, but Orion was just happy to be socializing. This game was working wonders for his anxiety. Something about the other players not being able to read every subtle change in his expression, or the fact that this body was not his body, made it easier to interact.[break][break]

"That's good," he says of the patrol. "I do that a lot for Fortree; I'm one of the senior rangers there. Plus, the city's really nice to look at."[break][break]

It wasn't your typical city with smoggy air and noise pollution, either. It was one with nature, and he adored that.[break][break]

"Nah, I didn't even know mega-evolved mobs were a thing in this game. That's really cool, though. Maybe I should try and get something that gives access to ground-type moves... do you know if that's a thing?" He's thinking in particular about those PKing rangers and their electric attacks. Hell, they might not even be electric-type, but a precaution would be nice all the same. "Honestly, I probably don't grind enough."

He's more reserved this time as he approaches the Honedge, watching a few others try and fall before him. It's oddly comforting to witness the failure of others; somehow, it softens the blow of his own soul being ripped from him.[break][break]
