Picking up the weapon and hefting it in his grip, Orion shoots a satisfied grin over at his warrior friend. Their hard-earned loot had been well worth the... experimental methods they'd gone through to obtain it.[break][break]

He's in the middle of reading up on the new bow when a Cramorant rudely interrupts, paralyzing Annie with its electric prey. Orion's quick to close out of the menu and activate the special ability of his current bow.[break][break]

Rocks slowly encrust the arrowhead, sharp and deadly at the tip, and Annie's effort to strike down the creature leaves it wide open for the ranger to aim his shot. The bow feels heavy in his grip. When he releases the shot, the arrow lands and rocks explode outward from the point of contact. Rock Wrecker was an ample name for the attack; it downs the Cramorant and simultaneously locks his avatar down, an 'immobilized' status symbol appearing above his health bar.[break][break]

When it wears off, he speaks. "Never going to get used to how weird that is."

There is some sort of commotion up ahead, muffled by the obstructing rock. The soft burbling he'd heard upon entering the cave has gone quieter... or is it simply that the others sounds have joined it, now, to drown it out in their chaos?[break][break]

Without a visual, it's hard to tell what they'll be up against, but Orion feels a subtle rumble through the soles of his boots. Not the powerful tremble of an earthquake or cave-in, but...[break][break]

"Quite possibly," he replies, grimacing. "Ground-types, I think."[break][break]

More specifically, he's thinking of that damned Steelix he'd had to deal with last time he was here. Arceus, he hoped they were in store for something else. Whatever it was, the rumble grows more persistent and Orion releases a couple more Pokemon from their capsules. His violet-skinned Swampert matches the Ranger's serious nature, while his Espeon merely flicks her forked tail and blinks up at him.[break][break]

"Now or never."

After hearing that someone had managed to be crowned King of Pugilis after managing to remove the sword from the stone, Orion takes the whole thing a little more seriously during his next approach. Honestly, he'd just been trying before to see if he could.[break][break]

Now that he knew the stakes...[break][break]

It was all luck-based, he's sure, but the other player had also been a Ranger and that gives him a sense of (probably false) confidence as he marches up to the sword and tries his best.

Pachirisu seems proud and healthy, and Orion knows he's made the right choice. There had been a lot of anxiety at first since he'd only dealt with the daycare attendant via e-mails and phone calls about how the Pokemon he'd given up were doing. All of that disappears under the eager affections of the pink-furred rodent.[break][break]

"She's flourishing," he agrees, fond. "I'm glad you decided to take her in."[break][break]

As a ranger who trained a great variety of Pokemon, it was always difficult to admit when one of them didn't necessarily suit his lifestyle, or couldn't deal with the occupational hazards that came with his job. He'd taken them from the wild, from their homes, and it felt failure each time he had to admit there was a better caretaker out there. Avery's presence is a soothing one that softens the blow.[break][break]

"I've had a Pokemon change like that," he admits, though he's momentarily distant as if the experience had not been pleasant.[break][break]

The egg, thankfully, snaps him out of it.[break][break]

"By all means." He carefully places the egg into her hands, ensuring she had a grip before releasing his own. "My Absol led me to it; it was in the woods not far from where I live. I assume something happened to the mother... or perhaps a trainer abandoned it there, I'm not sure."

Expecting Stormy's Kingdra to have followed them, it's only when Orion's Swampert reaches the boat and he glances back over his shoulder that he realises she's flagged behind. Guilt spikes in his gut.[break][break]

Was she all right?[break][break]

The answer becomes clear as Stormy half-stumbles onto the vessel and gasps for breath, her hands shaking. He'd thought perhaps that she had mild anxiety associated with the dive, but this was something severe. His instincts as a ranger kick in, pushing back any social anxieties and hesitations as he reaches forward to help with the helmet at her request.[break][break]

He's careful, gentle, and his hands find her shoulders once the helmet is off.[break][break]

"Deep breaths, OK? You ought to sit down." Should she let him, he'd guide her to a place to sit on the deck. He offers a quick and silent shake of his head when the captain makes to start the boat; it seems an ill idea when she's in a state of panic. Seasickness might compound to make it worse. A genuine concern for Stormy's well-being twists in his chest.[break][break]

"Why would you take on a diving mission if it freaks you out?"[break][break]

His tone isn't accusing or critical; it's worried, if anything, confused.

He feels distant in his relief, like the release of the gnawing worry has allowed his exhaustion to manifest in full force. He watches the Mudkip with the frozen ball without truly seeing, turning his attention to Olivia only when she speaks and reminds him of her presence.[break][break]

Arceus, he's so tired.[break][break]

"Oh," he murmurs. "How...?"[break][break]

His unformed question is answered when Olivia submerges herself in the tropical waters. He expects her to resurface after a few seconds, but the minutes draw themselves out in slow motion. Worry returns as a churning in his gut, one hand braced against his Swampert's flank to keep him steady as he stares at the space she'd disappeared. He ought to dive after her, right?[break][break]

Her Pokemon are what give him pause. They don't seem concerned, and surely they'd know if she were in danger?[break][break]

He jumps a little when she resurfaces with a gasp, relieved and alarmed in tandem.[break][break]

"You... yeah, you've done more than your part," he admits, managing a weary smile as he looks down at his Swampert, weakened and altered but alive, alive. "Please — tell him to contact me if he finds out anything that might affect Schism long-term." Another worried glance to the Swampert, who has himself waded over to the deathly ice ball. Orion wonders if he understands what it contains, or if he's merely curious about the Mudkip's 'toy'. "Thank you, Olivia. Truly."

Alec's words resonate with Orion, and he reminds himself that this kid is... well, still a kid, legally. He shouldn't have to shoulder this kind of responsibility. Orion thinks of Annie Mei and Ruby Walker; they didn't deserve the stress and trauma thrust onto them, either. He's quiet for a moment, struggling to find words.[break][break]

"You're allowed to have doubts," he says at last, his tone turned somber. "We've gotta put on a brave face for the public, but we're only human. It's natural to doubt." Especially when you were only seventeen and suddenly heralded as an icon, an authority figure. "From what I hear, though, you're doing just fine. And if you ever need advice, feel free to reach out. You don't have to shoulder everything on your own, y'know?"[break][break]

Orion can't help his surprised laugh at the other's brazen statement; Onus seems flustered after the remark slips out, backpedaling and striding several steps ahead. The councilman keeps pace and holds back any further laughter.[break][break]

"You're fine," he insists.[break][break]

He could relate to how Onus might be feeling. The first time he'd met Laurence Anderson on a job and realised who he was dealing with, he'd nearly had a nervous breakdown. Perhaps that's why Orion tries to be so relaxed with others. He didn't want to be intimidating.[break][break]

"Katas is a special one," Orion murmurs fondly of his Absol, the quiet rumbles in the dark-types throat suggesting some sort of conversation with the Nickit. It's not the first time he's wished to be able to understand them. "He's been with me a long time, too. I'm sure your partner'll evolve as soon as he feels he's ready."[break][break]

If he'd learned anything, it was that evolution was not a process to be rushed.[break][break]

He opens his mouth as if to comment further, then closes it with a frown. "You're not crazy," he assures the other ranger, his voice dropping to barely above a whisper. His Absol has gone tense, red eyes gleaming in the dim of the cave. He's listening, too. "We ought to follow them."

The other Skarmory's scream is loud and horrific as the mystical fire melts it alive, and Orion's forced to once again remind himself that this is all a game, it isn't real, they just have really good sound design.[break][break]

He can't help but to admire the raw power of a mage, however.

"Shit, that was intense," he breathes, laughing to diffuse his self-inflicted tension. "Wish I could do something that flashy."
[break][break]
He's stuck with attacks based more on utility than flashing lights, and he demonstrates that utility as a Cufant charges him with its superpower. He allows the mob to crash into him, feeling no result of the impact thanks to his ghost-typing, then activates his mirror move to retaliate in kind. The super-effective attack downs the Cufant in one hit, though icons above Orion's health bar indicate his lowered attack and defense as a result.[break][break]

"Worth it," he insists.

With Orion's limbs still stuck fast, there's nothing he can do to defend himself against the swinging fists of the Darmanitan. It strikes with such sheer force that its flaming punch knocks down a solid chunk of the ranger's health bar.[break][break]

Suddenly he's free again, and quick reflexes lend well to his ability to bounce out of the way of its hammering arms. He crashes down into it, paralyzing it with the brute force of his landing and mirroring its previous move to send a volley of pummeling arrows at his foe. It's uproar comes too late; a simple hex finishes it off, and the ranger decides its time to call it a day.
