Orion sucks in a sharp breath as a Gyarados erupts from the whirlpool, getting not only the attention of their small party but also the fishing players nearby. A mini-boss was a rare enough occurrence to be an excitement in any area, but they were lucky in that Fontaine's PVE status meant that no one could sneak in and steal the last hit.[break][break]

They were unlucky in that they now had a very pissed off fish-dragon to deal with, and Orion dives behind Annie to share in the protection of her shield as he lines up a shot.[break][break]

If there's one thing he knows about Gyarados in the real world, it's that they're not a fan of electricity.[break][break]

"Get clear!" he advises Annie as her breaking swipe strikes the boss, weakening and enraging it. He doesn't want to hit the warrior by mistake — the tip of his arrow sparks dangerously as he draws back the bowstring, scrunching up his expression as the great beast roars at them and he's bathed in its hot, fishy breath. Disgusting. However, it's open mouth provides the perfect target. His arrow lodges in the back of Gyarados' throat and fries it from the inside, its writhing body presenting a considerable hazard as it succumbs to the electricity.[break][break]

"Holy shit."

Could the sword in the stone be weakened, like any other mob?[break][break]

Orion finds himself straying to the edge of the churchyard with bow drawn, squinting as he lines up a shot. Would this automatically kill him, if he tried it? Would it disqualify him from ever receiving the rewards?[break][break]

He almost wants to shoot anyway, out of sheer spite, but grumbles to himself and shoulders his bow. Not worth the risk.[break][break]

He marches dutifully up to it and pulls as hard as he can.

A Pignite rushes him with a flaming charge, and Orion decides that it might be a good time to test out his new move.[break][break]

As he draws back the string of his bow and selects the appropriate skill, rocks begin to form around the arrowhead with a soft splintering sound. The bow feels heavier in his grip, and he takes careful aim before releasing the rock wrecker at his foe.[break][break]

As expecting, it knocks it out in one hit, but Orion isn't prepared for the sudden, jarring experience of his limbs going stiff and restricting his movement. Shit. He hoped whatever came next wasn't too unfriendly...

Her party request pops up in the corner of his screen rather than the center, for he'd moved his UI around in order to avoid being caught off guard in zones like these. Unfortunately, that had been a recent adjustment, and he keeps forgetting to look there.[break][break]

It's not until she retorts with a similar desire for peace that the ranger lowers his bow and spots the little red circle.[break][break]

Oops.[break][break]

"Shit, sorry, didn't see the request. I'm so used to everyone in these areas being out for blood."[break][break]

He accepts the party request, but he's only able to relax for a moment before a pair of Skarmory come screeching in from above.[break][break]

Swearing in surprise, he rolls out of the way of one's steel wings, pulling back a shot and managing to paralyze with a well-placed spark shot. Hex drains the rest of its health, and he catches his breath with heart pounding as he glances over to see if the mage was handling herself all right.

She's quick on the draw with her response; Orion was learning to expect nothing less from Annie Mei.[break][break]

It turns out that her strategy is more effective than perhaps she'd have been able to predict, one of the fish leaping directly into her blade and reducing itself to a cluster of loot. Orion blinks, impressed.[break][break]

"You're going to make them jealous," he laughs, glancing at the other fishers on the beach who were patiently waiting for bites. "Is there any advantage to fishing with a pole or nah?"[break][break]

In spite of the question, and perhaps because he neither owns a fishing pole nor has the slightest clue where to acquire one, Orion releases the electricity-infused arrow and takes down another fish as it leaps out of the water. It pixelates in mid-air and the loot bobs on the surf.

If nothing else, this damned sword in the stone was an excuse to brave the dangers of Valora.[break][break]

Dropping off into town in order to sell off some junk items and stash the loot from his recent training session somewhere safe, he takes a detour before returning to the safe, non-PK zones in order to visit the Honedge again.[break][break]

His home location was set to Aurora, so if nothing else this was a quick trip back.[break][break]

"I like nature," Orion insists, laughing. He knows the natural city isn't for everyone, but he couldn't imagine living anywhere else. "I'm a ranger, it's like... a job requirement to like it."[break][break]

He's less active of a ranger than he used to be now that he has to divide his time between jobs, but the principle was there.[break][break]

"I dunno if it'd be better than... wherever you live." He realises that he's not aware of where the Elite Four keep residence. Do they live together, like some kind of frat house for trainers? Do they even live in the same city? "I imagine you've gotta have pretty good internet already if you game a lot. Me, I mostly use the internet for the news. Boring, I know."[break][break]

He still had cable, for Arceus' sakes. He'd watch the occasional video on the internet sent to him by a colleague or friend, but that didn't require a good internet connection if you had the patience to let it load first.

Ranger Eliakim — Onus, he insists, and Orion nods — seems shy. Nervous, perhaps? It can be hard to tell, but as a socially anxious mess of a person who'd only started recently building his confidence out of necessity, he sympathized.[break][break]

Ranger Lykos was how he always introduced himself to people on the job, and he was growing more accustomed to being referred to by his last name thanks to his political position, but Orion was truthfully what brought him the most comfort, as well.[break][break]

He's more than amenable to the other's suggestion, making to follow him before Onus rethinks his statement and backpedals. The councilman offers a quiet smile.[break][break]

"Don't worry about it; you've got the map, you got here first." His gaze flicks over to the pair of dark-types, but his Absol seems amenable to the presence of the Nicket, bending down to touch his nose to the smaller creature. Orion gestures further into the cave to indicate they should probably keep moving; if the miners truly were in danger, they could walk and talk. "We're on the same page as far as I'm concerned. You can call me Orion, by the way." Maybe being on a first-name basis would help with comfort. "Formality is a bad habit being drilled into me, but I'm no stickler for it."

The PK zones terrify him.[break][break]

It's just a video game and dying doesn't really matter, but he still finds himself on edge as he slinks through Valora. He's doing his best to avoid other players after previous bad experiences, but he really needs some of the drops from the mobs in this area in order to finish a quest that's been clogging up his log since he'd accepted it days ago.[break][break]

His new bow was less useful here with its rock-type ability, but he keeps it equipped on the off chance he runs into a fire or ice mage, or maybe a flying-type ranger, that wants him dead.[break][break]

Of course the second that thought enters his head, he spots a mage whose aesthetic screams fire, and the over-cautious ranger draws back his bow as the equipped arrow becomes encrusted in rock.[break][break]

"Not looking for a fight," he says carefully, "but don't expect an easy one if you attack me. I'm just here to farm mobs."

Orion's incredulous remark over the local voice chat announces his presence to the few players situated along the beach, most of whom wielded fishing rods and seemed mostly impassive to the goings-on around them. One player, however, had a different idea of fishing... with a laugh, he's drawn to her like a moth to flame, the surf tugging at his boots as he wanders over.[break][break]

"Get tired of the fishing pole?"[break][break]

In spite of his teasing jest, Orion pulls out his bow and draws back the string, the tip of his arrow sparking with energy. Maybe the unconventional methods of fishing were the way to go...

Even as a ranger, he'd never been able to avoid toxicity altogether if he wanted to keep his job. Most people in Hoenn treated them like heroes and respected the time and effort they put into keeping the routes and region safe, but there were bad eggs in every bunch. Now, as a councilman, he not only had to endure those bad seeds but smile and stay polite.[break][break]

He chuckles when Alec mentions his appearance.[break][break]

"Well, I don't really have an eyepatch, either. It's cosmetic in the game anyway, I can see fine if I take it off... which is good, because I end up doing that a lot. It ties together the aesthetic but it's real annoying when you're trying to scout."[break][break]

Alec, Orion recalls, had taken up the mantle of gym leader during the chaos of the new year. Having been elected to office shortly before the disaster in the Night Market, he can relate to what it felt like to be thrust into a new job with minimal guidance. Silph had been kind to Orion in that regard, offering good advice. The councilman wonders if Alec ever got that.[break][break]

"We'd tell you if you were needed, no worries," he tries to reassure him. "Anything else you've got questions about, though? I'm still pretty green myself but I've been doing my best to figure out how it all works."

Even more satisfying had been ambushing their meet later and revealing that they'd been league officials all along. "For real though, I had to surrender that to the league. Ill-gotten gains and all that."

A Charmander appears, and after releasing the auto-attack he'd been holding, Orion has to restrain himself from following up with his new rock-type move. Reading the ability, it had a hefty recharge time during which the user was rooted in place and unable to act, and that wasn't the kind of thing to be firing off at a basic mob. He'd save it for something big.[break][break]

Instead, he fires off a spark shot and bounces out of the way of its flaming fangs. He crashes down into it after a couple of seconds, sending it sprawling.[break][break]

A little stunned from his rough landing, Orion picks himself up and takes a breather.
