The fiery mage speaks of greed, and Orion shrugs. It's a video game. That's what people do in games, right? Everyone aims for the most kills, the best loot? Honestly, his knowledge was based solely from an outsider's perspective: this was his first MMO.[break][break]

"They probably think the same of us."[break][break]

They party up, and he nods at her suggestion that they tackle the quest together. As every leek, even the large ones, counted for each player in the party, it would go faster with two of them than if they were competing over their kills. At least this wasn't a PvP zone.[break][break]

It's comforting to note that the mage can do most of the killing. Orion won't admit it, but he feels bad hunting the birds that were otherwise passive mobs. It was different in areas like the Infinite Tower, where everything — other players included — was aggressive and it was kill-or-be-killed, but these birds were just minding their own virtual business. Curse his soft ranger heart.[break][break]

"Thank you."[break][break]

As she twirls into their midst, Orion strays along the edges, picking up the loot and watching the party total rise. Slowly but surely, they were meeting their primary goal of 50 leeks, but as for the large ones...[break][break]

His eyes light up when he spots one, bouncing toward it and landing in front of another player who'd clearly had the same idea. Orion feels bad as he swipes the object and puts it into his inventory, but it had been Vulpes who killed the Farfetch'd that had dropped it. He shouldn't feel guilty when the other player was the one intending to thieve. (That doesn't stop him from typing a quick 'sorry' into local chat, emoting an apologetic wince before going back to collect the other leeks that had dropped in the meantime.

Orion blushes, flustered, glad for the mask of his avatar that he can hide behind. It makes it much easier to handle the intricacies of socializing when the redness of his cheeks didn't immediately broadcast his anxiety to the world. He's able to take a moment to compose himself before togging his mic and responding.[break][break]

"Not everyone is negative," he corrects, not wanting to come across as a downer. "I've met some really nice people, too. Just the rude ones tend to stand out, y'know? ... but, thank you. I do appreciate that."[break][break]

He did his best, really.[break][break]

On the subject of Council meetings, Orion restrains himself from responding with his knee-jerk trust me, you don't want to be involved. The Council had to appear united and cohesive to the public, so he does his best to keep the mess of their meetings in reality on the down-low.

"Oh, not unless we ask," he assures Alec. "Sometimes we'll bring in others if we need input but it's usually just the Council and the commissioner."[break][break]

It occurs to him then how truly young Alec is to be taking on the responsibility of a gym leader. It must be a lot of pressure, trying to make sure that he did everything right. Orion had been an utter mess at Alec's age, and he's certain he couldn't have handled it.

His laughter comes sharp over the mic at mention of FERNANDO SILPH.[break][break]

"Oh, him. Yeah, he's one of the reasons I don't frequent the PK zones." They'd only bumped into one another the one time thus far, but it had been enough to drill into the ranger that he was not prepared. "He ganked my healer friend and I when we were doing the egg quest in Avia. As for the name... I don't know, I'm starting to think it's intentional. His friend had a really weird name, too. Just a bunch of A's. I'd appreciate the teaming up if I do have to go back into those zones, though. Thanks! If you ever need a ranger for your missions or whatever, feel free to give me a holler. I'm usually online after work if I don't get any pings from the Rangers."

Last time he'd been called to Rusturf Tunnel, he'd been greeted with a Steelix snoring in his path. He hoped whatever awaited him on this particular call was less... well, massive, for one, but also less of a pain to deal with. His Espeon had needed time to recover after the steel brute had slammed her into the wall of the tunnel.[break][break]

It's eerily quiet when the ranger makes his way into the cave, no sound but the steady burble of water from somewhere within. No screaming, no Pokemon cries. No miners, either, though he does spot a figure he presumes might be his partner for the mission judging by the map in his hand.[break][break]

Orion's Absol pads silently beside him as they approach.[break][break]

"Morning," he greets. "Ranger Lykos. I assume you're the other ranger they sent out?" There's a note of apology in his tone, regret at not automatically recognizing the other man. There was a time when he'd known most of the rangers, but juggling his old job with his new position on the Council meant there was less time to spend idle. "I got called out here for an emergency, but it's awfully quiet."

He's less aggressive than last time as he marches up to the stone; he hadn't fallen on his ass and humiliated himself the last time he'd tried, which was enough to leave him feeling neutral toward the weapon and its rock once more.[break][break]

He still wanted to figure out what you got from winning, even though he hasn't heard of anyone winning yet, and so he rolls his shoulders back as if it'll help before stepping forward and taking the sword in both hands.[break][break]

Maybe that would make a difference. (Probably not.)[break][break]

Even though Orion had gone out of his way to make sure his avatar didn't resemble him in spite of his pretty obvious IGN, he stills feels strangely self-conscious as he explores the Knight's Bath.[break][break]

The hot springs are certainly pretty with the steam curling off the water and forming patterns in the air. As of right now, Orion is the only player present apart from someone who bears a little ellipses symbol over their head indicating that they were busy in some kind of menu. After a moment, he recognizes the other player as alec foster, feeling a little less tense upon the realization that they weren't strangers.[break][break]

"Are you actually there, or AFK?"[break][break]

The question is posed as Orion directs his character over to the water, stripping down to his undergarments and setting his earthen bow upon the stone next to him. Steam forms droplets of water upon the leaves adorning the weapon in a stunning aesthetic touch.

Orion can't help his laughter at Kyle's question, almost certainly confirming that it was him.[break][break]

"Oh, he's really good, but he can be a bit arrogant about it," Orion jokes, hoping Kyle realises he doesn't actually mean that. Kyle was actually one of the more humble people that the ranger had met, and certainly among the Elite Four. "You must be a big fan, to know such intimate details of his gaming history."[break][break]

Orion's smiling in reality, and his in-game avatar emotes with a cheeky smirk.

Only one? It's surprising at first, but after giving it a little bit of thought Orion supposes most gamers make friends with like-minded folks. It was a bit hard to refer someone who was already playing.[break][break]

The other ranger leads his thoughts in a certain direction with his question, and Orion frowns against his mic in thought.[break][break]

"Only one stands out," he admits, thinking of a chilly new year's night at the top of a mountain. There's a notable pause as it clicks. "... Kyle Lopez. I'm sure you've heard of him."[break][break]

The humour in his voice gives away the joke, the fact that it's more than an off-hand comment and more of an accusation. It would explain why he recognized the voice: they might not have interacted too much directly, but he saw the Elite Four at the office in passing. More often than not, lately, if he thinks hard on it.

"Rudeness?" Orion sounds surprised, and a little confused. "You haven't come across as rude. Trust me, I deal with... a lot of rude people."

He found that there were some people who felt unnerved by his council position enough to keep their harsh opinions to themselves, and others that wouldn't care if he was emperor of the universe. As a ranger, however, most irate people were willing to give him a piece of their mind.

"No worries, though, I don't tend to broadcast it."[break][break]

Alec apparently admires his position in politics, which is a new one for Orion. His cheeks heat up, and he's glad that his avatar doesn't mimic that particular intricacy. Flustered but also oddly flattered, he finds himself smiling.[break][break]

"I grew up in Hoenn, so I do my best to take care of her."[break][break]

Apparently the young gym leader is quite experience with MMOs, albeit lacking in the VR department. That went for everyone, Orion supposed. "I've never been much of a gamer, honestly, so I tend to get my ass kicked if I try to go to those zones." He laughs, not sounding bitter about it. "Don't really have the time to grind, either, unfortunately, so I just kind of team up with my friends when they're online."[break][break]

He shoots a friend request to Alec, because why not?

He wonders if there's some kind of friend-referral program in the MMO, like he knows a lot of phone games tend to have. Even if there was, it's not like Orion knows enough people well enough to capitalize on it. He has a lot of acquaintances and few deeper relationships.[break][break]

So, when the other asks about his certainty, Orion shakes his head.[break][break]

"Exactly; I meet a lot of people, so usually it's only the ones I see around a lot I'd recognize."[break][break]

The other ranger's words suggest that maybe the guy doesn't know him, though? That makes things more complicated. His avatar tents his fingers, then reaches up to remove the eye-patch.[break][break]

"Not a lot of people I know are gamers, though," he muses, then laughs. "Least not good ones."

"Like I have fans! That'll be the day." Hell, he barely even had friends thanks to his tendency to socially isolate. His friends list had been slowly blossoming along with his confidence, but fans? He shakes his head, but he's smiling. "Naw, it's really me. Got dragged into this by a friend."[break][break]

'Dragged into' might imply he's reluctant or not enjoying himself, but his level and the fact that he was still playing without said friend and after having been murdered by this guy and his friend, well, that spoke for itself.[break][break]

"You sound familiar. Pretty sure we've met, but your username isn't exactly telling." He chuckles. "Interesting choice."

Orion's last attempt had been downright pitiful. He'd attempted to grasp and pull and had succeeded only in embarrassing himself when his grip slipped off the hilt and the Honedge devoured his soul while he stumbled back.[break][break]

Hell, even if he didn't manage to pull the damned blade out, he needed to redeem himself. Most of the players in the churchyard probably didn't know him from Adam and hadn't seen his failure but he knew, damn it, and that was bad enough.[break][break]

He grasps the hilt and yanks a little more aggressively this time; it was personal.[break][break]

Orion blinks at the projectile as it bounces off the invisible protective field, amused.[break][break]

Apparently this guy expected him to be upset, which... all right, fair enough, it had been an annoying situation and he'd been irked at the time, but weren't video games about having fun? It wouldn't be much fun if he held grudges.[break][break]

"No, I did," he shrugs. "EXP, metal coats, the egg mission. But we just went back later and finished it when less people were around."

As for the EXP and loot, well, Orion didn't care too much about that. Sure, it was annoying to have to grind back up to where he'd been before, but it's not like it was the end of the world.[break][break]

Something about this guy's voice sounds familiar, but he's unable to place it yet. He's met a lot of people, it's not surprising.
