[attr="class","athread"]Ultimeite was itching for a fight, so where better to go than the brawler’s kingdom? She approached one of Pugilis’ many training spot – an otherwise empty field with a standing gong in its centre. It didn’t take newcomers long to understand the area’s spawning system – its sound would summon wild beasts into the area, eager to take up the call for the fight. In other words, it was exactly what she needed.

The samurai unsheathed her sword, flipped it in her hand and struck the disc with its hilt. The metallic crash resonated far and wide, letting enemies and allies alike know that a brawl was about to begin. Annie stood in front of it, abusing the game’s inability to damage her hearing, so that all that approached would know the challenger’s face.

Anything else strong enough to beat her down, she’d wisely strayed away from, or at least relied on strength in numbers. After the first three deaths, she should have cut her losses… But never before had she been bested by an inanimate object, and she wasn’t looking to change that! The sword would be claimed in the name of stubborn persistence!

Stuff like this is why I’m glad I run into other trainers.” Few could deny Annie’s battle prowess, but part of being a good trainer was always learning. Constant battles were as good a method as any for that, but sometimes a little chat with a stranger worked just as well. The insights made her smile grow, and likewise, the Delphox’s – though he seemed more amused than anything.

Before Kat had finished asking about the gyms, her lips took a turn for the cocky. Never one to miss a chance to announce the fact, she answered: “Four! And going for more, but that’s not a priority right now.” She nodded, as if the confirmation was needed to believe her. “That’s enough to take on the Elite Four, so I’m gearing up to take them down, and then-“ Wiggling fingers made a rainbow in the air as she finished. “Champion of Hoenn. If all goes to plan, anyway! If I’ve gotten this far, then I figure that I’ve got a good shot.”

The sun’s rays retreated as their initial move wore off, but it’d served its purpose well. Even the region’s night owls had come out to watch the girls talk. Annie didn’t deem the pair important enough to stop talking, and so it was left to Hocus to shoo them away with swatting motions and disgruntled barks.

[attr="class","athread"]Annie, on the other hand, didn’t join the game to have to think out her actions. “Only one thing to do, then!” Off she went, springing onto the first of many pillars. She very quickly learned that even in Ransei, she wasn’t safe from one of gaming’s biggest sins.

“Oh, are you kidding m- Ice physics are the worst!” Her feet slipped and slid towards the pillar’s edge. Wildly circling arms matched her movements in reality as she found her footing, just short of falling to her demise.

“Okay. I think I’ve got this,” she said between ragged breaths. She stood up straight, and leapt to a smaller platform. The pillars didn’t budge under her weight, which was one less problem for them to worry about. Judging by the girl’s struggle to keep still, it didn’t make up for the ice having a serious lack of friction. “These things are designed to be beaten, right? So if we’re careful and don’t fall to our deaths, it’ll be fine. Probably. Hopefully.”

[attr="class","athread"]An arrow to the head in the tutorial would have been an awful way to go out. She jolted out of her endless swings, instinct forcing her to jump away from a danger that had long since passed. Could players even die in the zone? Annie didn’t know, and she wasn’t in a rush to find out. Narrowed eyes shot themselves towards the source of her troubles, only to soften as they settled on a person. A cute ranger (and a newb, she reminded herself), quick to apologise… And set off Motor Mouth Mei.

“Oh, don’t worry about it! Almost dying is what warriors do best!” A floppy-handed gesture waved off her concerns. Ultimeite, clad in samurai armour that matched her hair and eyes, was most certainly a melee fighter, though she had nothing in the way of head protection. “I’m no expert, as you might guess from my sword, but I’ve watched a lot of rangers! I think your aim gets better if you let the bow charge up for a second! They give the ranged guys delays to make up for, you know, the range.”

[attr="class","athread"]The girl struck a victory pose that wouldn’t be out of place in a magical girl show. “One hard hit, but it was worth it to return the favour! Besides, brushing off those blows is the big reason why I chose this class.” Ultimeite brushed off her armour (not that there was any debris on it), and gestured for the man to follow her further in. The Beartic’s defeat had trigged a light in the distance; a once-hidden pathway revealed. “There’s got to be something good at the end of this if everything in here is that strong, right?”

She didn’t wait for a response, venturing towards the light with or without her companion. Her ardour was rewarded by her smacking into translucent ice walls no less than three times. She did a much better job of playing off her embarrassment after the first one. Still, her fumbles and outstretched arms guided them through the icy passage and to their next challenge.

A chamber of ice awaited them. Stalactites covered the ceiling, but the path before them ended in a steep drop. Annie realised that she didn’t know if the game had fall damage, and she wasn’t prepared to find out. The passage continued directly across the room, but their only way to it was to jump and balance their way across pillars of ice.

“…Well. I’m guessing that you don’t have a flying spell on you.”

There was an edge of arrogance there, because- “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that you were trying to impress me with all that!” She let the words hand in the air for just long enough for the woman to show offence before she went on. “I’m kidding. Or am I? Seriously though, good job!” Her hands settled themselves on her hips as she gave her analysis.

“I haven’t experimented much with Phantom Force, but every time I face it is a pain in my ass. One guy I was up against used it to get both of his Pokemon out of danger. It’s a good surprise double attack that way, on top of being a quick dodge. I wonder what it looks like to the Pokemon…” She shook her head again. “Getting off track. It’d be super-good if you paired Mismagius with a brawler that couldn’t close the gap, but I guess it could work well with Hocus too, right?” Her partner gave a quiet drawl that she seemed to take as affirmation. It was only when she followed his gaze that she saw that the newcomers had distracted him. Annie barely gave them a second glance. “Nothing special; don’t bother.” The fox folded his arms, ruminating on battle plans of his own.

“Anyway, finding pairs that don’t seem like they should work is fun! It keeps the enemy guessing, and finding new ways to make Pokemon shine is how top trainers are made. I’ll give away one of my trade secrets for free – my Ludicolo and Alolan Raichu wrecked a gym leader’s duo!” A slight exaggeration, of course. By the end of the match only one of her partners was still standing, but nobody had expected the battle to end as quickly as it did. “Stuff like that is fun to show off, and it keeps people on their toes, so I’ll keep working on more of them.” There was an unmistakable pride in her work, and why wouldn’t there be? Battling was her claim to fame, and one of the reasons she’d survived so long.

Annie only had herself to blame, of course. Her arrogance drove her to skip the tutorial and learn everything the hard way. It’d been fun, and mostly intuitive, but somewhere between spending five minutes figuring out how to start a fire and getting murdered by a sword in the stone… She started to wonder if she’d missed a few tips. The warrior sucked up her pride and returned to the starting zone, ready to gain some new insights.

Instead, she’d spent most of the quest whacking the same three Wobbuffets with a single auto-attack animation. A tooltip she’d long since minimized told that there was a button to start combos, but was Annie going to remember to open it? Probably not.

[attr="class","athread"]An evening in Ignis was an impressive sight, especially by game standards. Even in the dead of night, the spouts of steam from volcanoes and geysers brought Lavaridge to mind. The game couldn’t perfectly transmit temperature to them, but Annie knew that the place felt ‘warm’.

The pool of lava at the edge of her vision helped too.

Having already lost a life to it, Ultimeite stood far away it as she awaited her partner. Her and the rogue had some training to do if they were going to win their rematch, and the nameless beasts of the fiery lands would make for good practice. They’d need to learn how to handle the burn, after all. Especially Steal, but she wouldn’t say that (out loud).

"Training under the cover of darkness, ready to face the heat of a thousand flames! What's the worst that could happen?"

Annie couldn’t say that she approved of the thievery, but he wasn’t wrong. Everybody knew the risks when they walked into Ransei’s riskier half, them included. “We’ll move as a pack, then. Getting the Farfetch’d together should be easy. They’re not very smart, so we can keep out eyes peeled for anybody getting too close.” She drew her sword, pointing it straight ahead. There was nobody to direct it at, but her raised voice quickly found an audience in distant players. “We’ll let them know that if anybody comes near the Ultimeite Squad, we’ll kick them right back to the Safe Zone!”

A few annoyed emotes popped up, but the message was clear. Even the pair Gavin had stolen from understood that their leek-hunting time had come to an abrupt end. Deeming the area free of major threads, the warrior got to work. A move like Breaking Swipe made getting the attention of several birds simple. Two, five, eight, eleven of them followed as she rushed around, never stopping long enough to let an auto-attack hamper her efforts. The flock would increase with every swipe, and with the immunity their herd provided, it would quickly reach ridiculous levels of furious flapping.

She respected the last charge – mostly because it didn’t leave her much of a choice.

She rushed in too, sword at the ready for one last attack. He threw her forward, but her sword remained out, brushing against the man as gravity took hold of her. And so Ultimeite met her end, the trip merely helping her on what was bound to be a final fall. A taste of death’s icy grasp hit Annie before her screen turned black, rubbing in her failure. Respawning in another kingdom, Annie took a deep breath, accepted the friend request, and set off in search of the next challenge.

It only took a few words for her to recognise Ruby's voice – and for Ultimeite to show her offended emote. “Well, hello to you too, stranger! I didn’t go do all this effort making my character so easy to recognise for you to pretend that you didn’t!” There was a method to her narcissism, of course. A drifter like her had few ways of keeping in touch with those she knew, and therefore no way of knowing how many players were familiar faces at a glance. The solution, as egotistical as it seemed, had done a fairly good job of helping her connect with old friends… Which made it a little irksome when it went unacknowledged, but nothing that she couldn't brush off. As assertive as she'd sounded, a smile was back on her face a moment later, reminding the party that she was just that passionate.

She claimed her egg from the NPC and handed it off to Ruby (once she’d given the hug, of course). It went without saying that the girl wouldn’t hear the end of it if anything went wrong, but if Annie had her way nothing would trouble them. “Onwards!” She turned towards the north, and started walking. Well, goose-stepping. She’d found the perfect walk-cycle for a long trek, and by Arceus, she was going to make the most of it. Her katana rested at her hip, a sheathed but ever-present warning for those who might mean them harm.
