Another Chansey brought about another sigh of relief. Annie had never known one of their kind to be aggressive unless commanded to, and even then it was a struggle, if Fortuna was anything to go by. The pink ball received a wave – which, of course, it returned in kind – before Annie put her eyes back on the road. Path. Grass. Whatever. Her partner was trusting her to keep them from trampling an innocent, and letting her faith be misplaced would reverse days of training.

Frustration gave way to shock, fright, and then a pang of regret. “Shit, no, don’t-“ A hand reached halfway across the table before it closed and halted. It had been a long time since she’d had to handle a crying boy, and it being her fault wasn’t going to make it any easier. Trixie rushed from her side and across the table to Alec’s. He’d be the recipient of a Whimsicott’s hug; given her size, that meant she fell onto his body and stretching her stubby arms out.

Annie, on the other hand, took several seconds more to choose how to respond. “Listen, i-it’s fine. I overreacted. Don’t freak out, please.” For once, she looked to be at a loss, but even that wouldn’t last long. A resigned sigh preceded truths she rarely shared:

“I wasn’t trying to make you feel bad about it. The words just slipped out. I mean, I appreciate the compliment, but…” She bit her lip. So many words, and she couldn’t find the right ones to fix things.

“You live your life and I live mine. I’m sure there’s a lot of problems you have that I don’t even think about, and the other way around. That’s just how it goes sometimes.” She paused, her gaze trying to meet his – if he’d let it. “It’s cool. Honestly. You didn’t know. It’s not the kind of thing I run around telling people… And hey, if you didn’t notice then I must be doing something right, right?” A hollow chuckle escaped her.

“I’ve had a rough time, sure. But it’s taught me a lot. It made me strong, and I’m going to keep getting stronger. I’ve learned a lot, whether I wanted to or not, and I’ve made my own family along the way. You living your life isn’t disrespectful, as long as me living mine isn’t. It’s just… weird? Foreign? Yeah, foreign’s the word. A little hard to wrap my head around. And I can’t be the only one.”

The bell rang, forcing them to switch partners. A small part of Annie was glad she had to leave when the alternative was trying to salvage their shambles of a date. She flashed him an apologetic smile, beckoned for Trixie to hop off and took a half-step away from the table. "Sorry. I hope you feel better soon."

[attr="class","athread"]Annie stopped. Her smile died a slow death, giving way to pure horror. For a full five seconds, she gave Sigmund, Emolga and Trixie the same wide-eyed stare. Her words were but a whisper. “You’re kidding, right?” Her arms shot up to either side of her head as she yelled: “Are you kidding me?! How did I never figure that out!?” Trixie waved her arms up as high as they could go, shouting with her trainer. There was a good chance that she was doing it for the sake of joining in, rather than out of shared panic.

“My parents pranked me for fif! Teen! Years!” Her hands dragged themselves down the sides of her face, pulling her head towards the table as they went. She had the decency to keep eye contact as he continued, but her eyes were clouded by the shock of his bombshell. “Y-Yeah… Language jokes are a real pain, aren’t they? Especially when your name is one.”

Her head dropped further, gently meeting the table. She was loud enough to be heard, largely because she was too loud for her own good normally. “It’s okay. Go. Fight. Kick Butt. Make jokes. Hotel. I’ll just hang here. I’ve got… a lot to think about.” One of Trixie’s stubs rested atop Annie’s head, while the other waved farewell to their new friends. At least one of them looked overjoyed to have met them.

Quake found himself under fire from both liquid and solid water. A claw forced itself ice and onto the ground, holding himself steady for the moment it’d take him to recover. They were brutal attacks, but the Excadrill wasn’t going out quite that easily. The Goodra found herself the victim of a dark glare from him as he forced himself to stand upright.

Annie was quiet. Not just because of the fight, but because of a self-realisation. “And yet, you’re still talking. You’ve taught me at least one thing today, that’s for sure. Quake!” He shifted his glance from enemy to trainer. “Still good?” He nodded, but even that was both hesitant and an obvious strain. “Awesome. Just a little longer. Now get yourself out of there. Cairo, Aura Sphere on the Goodra!” The Lucario charged his species’ signature move, giving the dragon but a second to prepare for the next attack. The distraction, if all went to plan, would give Quake the chance to free himself from the ice, for breaking through hard surfaces was trivial for a living drill. By the time the blue ball was fired, he was ready to launch his own assault.

“Quake, Rock Slide on the Dragonite!” He clapped his claws together, following in the footsteps of the Tyranitar before him. As he dashed towards his new target, white orbs formed from nothingness above him, shaping themselves into jagged rocks that rained upon Veda.

[attr="class","athread"]With every word, it became clearer that the gym leader had gone all out with the ice theme. A mechanical voice only added to the cold, much to Annie’s chagrin. No chance for introductions, or anybody to spout smack talk to. A frown started to take hold of her face, but it faded once the gym Pokemon took the stage.

At first glance, there were at least two conditions for her to take advantage of. With that in mind, her first Pokemon was a no-brainer. Glimmer’s Pokeball was slotted into the machine, assuming that it finally allowed her to do so. Her hand hovered over Bastion’s Pokeball, but the Light Screen gave her pause. Another was better suited for the job, and so Blitz joined the battle.

It almost seemed too easy. A smirk showed itself, mostly because she knew – hoped – that the machine couldn’t use it against her. “Glimmer, can you hear me? Get that Aurora Veil going.” A Pokemon with Snow Warning had no trouble adjusting to the Hail, or using it to her advantage, as her barrier showed. “Blitz, just hold tight for a second… But I bet you know how this is going to start.” The Weavile didn’t need to turn to face her; she could hear his cocky smile when he called his name.

Then came the Ranger’s turn to share. A beaming grin lost some of its life. A bad childhood wasn’t much to brag about, but Annie wasn’t sure if not knowing hers was something to envy. Probably not, considering what she’d just said. “You made the most of what you were given. That’s the most important thing. Looks like you did a pretty good job, too. You’re doing what you love, your guys seem pretty happy being with you, and you don’t have to look back when there’s so much to look forward to.” A job easier said than done, she reminded herself, when remnants of that past whispered in the dark. Before she could dwell on those thoughts, Melody’s coo drew her attention to their journey, which seemed to have come to an end.

“Great. Thanks, Mel!” The Lapras bowed her head as Annie disembarked, beckoning Kaida to follow. “You’re welcome to visit the Camp any time, Shiro! …If you can find it. I don’t really have a phone yet, so once I say goodbye to somebody… Sometimes they email me, and sometimes I just get lucky. If we’re both travelling the region, I’m sure we’ll run into each other again eventually.”

A wild Snom was close enough to watch the Eevee get ensnared, and quickly decided that it wanted no part in their business. That worked for Annie, since she had no desire to catch a Snom. She watched the bug’s hurried shuffle rustle the grass on its way out and patted Celeste, urging her to pick up the pace. “You’ve been great so far, girl, and we’re almost done.” The Rapidash’s proud huff brought a smile to her trainer’s face, though she was only allowed to keep it for a few seconds. The mare came close to showing that it earned its species’ name, which meant Annie had less time to smile and more time to stop herself flying off the mount’s back.

Surprise. Confusion. Regret. Each of those flashed over the girl’s face, but only for a faction of a second. She let the woman say her piece, tilting her head back to get a better look at her. “You’re not wrong. Normal seems… boring, after a while. But it’s comfortable. Safe. Boring doesn’t have to be all that bad either. I miss it, but only sometimes.” A wistful tone told that it might have been a bit more frequent than ‘sometimes’.

“The safety of it is nice, I guess… But you’re not wrong. I’d still be a weak little girl if things had stayed fine for me.” She paused, turning back to Melody for a moment. Her ferry heard the hesitation and knew that a soothing tune was in order. A gentle hum began, quiet enough that the girls could still talk, but present enough to be heard and appreciated. Annie barely gave a second thought as she started stroking her Pokemon’s neck, laying her gaze back on the ranger.

“More normal than now. I started off in an orphanage, so that wasn’t so bad. Then Rocket burned it down. And messed up a lot of the rest of Kanto. Getting out of that taught me a lot about being strong. Also, not dying.” Normally, she knew better than to share a tragic backstory on the first meeting, but something about Kaida’s words, the look in her eyes, the emotion (or lack thereof) she seemed to hold, told her that the woman might empathise rather than sympathise. At the very least, she wouldn’t fall over herself pitying Annie for what couldn’t be changed.

“I managed to get myself out of the region, and things are better here. The place isn’t being run by crime lords, for one… But I’m underage, with next to no legal documents, so finding proper work and a place to stay has been… Bad. And that’s how I ended up here.” She gestured to the body of water, and the mount that separated them from it. Despite the circumstances that had led her there, she sounded mostly content with it. Mostly. “On the road, doing odd jobs to earn my way and training up my Camp. This is pretty normal for me now, but it’s not… normal normal, you know?”
