[attr="class","athread"]“Hey, I was just making sure! I’ve started to branch out into ranged, so maybe you were diversifying too. Need something to deal with every mage under the sun having Freeze-Dry… And some of the brawlers too, apparently.” Her words devolved into grumbled as the Dusclops appeared. An ability like Pressure was hard to replicated in virtual reality, but boy, did the game try. The light sensation of being pushed on all sides announced the ghosts’ presence before Annie saw them, standing there… Menacingly. Not that it would stop her, of course.

One raised his hand to charge an attack, but Annie wouldn’t give him the chance. A body-check by way of Accelerock cancelled the Will-O-Wisp before it could fully form, and from there it was a done deal. Each auto-attack from the warrior cancelled the Dusclops' animation before he could finish casting a spell, taking a chunk of his health bar for the attempt, until there was nothing left for her to steal.

[attr="class","athread"]It was amongst the boldest or birds that showed itself first; a fitting rival for the young warrior. She could have done without its moves, though. The bird coated itself in a near-blinding white glow. She recognized the move well from her Hawlucha, and in her head she spared a moment to commend the game’s attention to detail… Followed by a thought that she really didn’t want to get hit by that. Fortunately, she had just the trick.

Her blade was extended by a streak of near-solid water at its top as she charged for the Braviary, seemingly undeterred by the Sky Attack it was preparing. She wasn’t, but only because Fishious Rend could and would exploit the move’s charging time. The eagle was down and out before it could strike, and good thing too. The last thing she needed was to be at half health when her next foe showed itself.

[attr="class","athread"]Again, she walked up. Again, she took a deep breath. Again, she wrapped a hand around the sword’s hilt, closed her eyes, and prepared for the worst. Most would say that she was on a fool’s errand by that point – not that she would listen. The little warrior rarely let go of a goal once she had it in mind, especially when it was so easy to try again. Well, easy as trudging back to the sword from the nearest safe zone, but compared to most of reality’s struggles, that was a walk in the park! Or a walk to her inevitable demise… But that kind of negative thinking never helped anybody!

She’d fought Yamask twice before in the real world, and that was enough to teach her a lesson. “Doubt you had it in mind, but try not to touch them.” She hovered her sword in front of her chest and jabbed her – or more specifically her armour – with its hilt. The banging of plate against plate was the closest most warriors would could to Clanging Scales. Her equipment might not have been the best for the job, but the game made up for that with an attack that could come close to a mage’s power, and take out her target in one move. As payment, her Defense took a drop, but it was a worthy price to pay.

As far as she was concerned, the for was just another starting enemy that would be gone in one hit. It surviving an Accelerock to the face quickly put an end to that theory. Then it started an act otherwise reserved for the most cowardly of Pokemon. Fleeing. Quickly. Faster than the warrior’s run speed could match, even. Annie groaned. Fortunately, she’d picked up a move for that exact situation. A fist banged against her armour, emulating Clanging Scales to bring down the evasive foe, and ran up to collect her reward.

[attr="class","athread"]Annie liked Avia’s towers. A tower meant safety. It was much harder to be sent flying out of a building than out in the open air, two steps away from careening to her death. It meant she was a little harder for enemies to spot, and much less of an easy opportunity for them to bother. Two less things to worry about as she hunted down the land’s spawns.

Time was of the essence, of course. A boss had spawned and she was only a few items short of paying her way in. In an effort to speed up the process, she walked up to the tower’s unglazed window, cupped her hands and imitated a Staraptor’s call. Badly. Still, the quality didn’t matter, as long as it drew in her next kill.

[attr="class","athread"]Of all the kingdoms, Avia was the one that made Annie feel the least safe. The player-killing was one thing, but at least she could defend against that after the first strike. If a player summoned harsh winds, however, or decided to send her a flying kick to the face, she’d careen off a platform and fall damage would handle the rest.

She, like most other players in the area, was especially guarded, and it showed. She kept looking over her shoulder as she travelled, sword already drawn to defend against a griefer. Or a wild Pokemon. Whichever came first, really. A platform with a single rope bridge leading in or out became her stage for that day. There she waited, daring any bird that passed by to try their luck. The players were only given a cautious look.

Line up here, pretend that you stand a chance of winning against me, then I’ll swing my oversized knife a bunch and you’ll drop dead! Let’s get this over with!” An impatient samurai tapped her sword against the ground like most would do their foot. There was no time for fun and games when there was a bigger bird to slay. A bigger, cooler, stronger bird that likely had better drops than all of her foes combined. There was no way she'd let that slip through her fingers.

[attr="class","athread"]A flurry of golden stars could only mean one thing. Memories of another world told Annie it wasn’t worth dodging, and it wasn’t until the attack whittled at her health bar that she realised she might have a chance of dodging Swift in that world. Oh well. Low-level mobs didn’t stand enough of a chance for her to let that annoy her. Instead, she handled the second beast as swiftly as the first. Stomping her foot against the ground summoned rocks from… the sky, she guessed, to crash down on the Ambipom, reducing it to experience orbs before the attack had even ended.

The oversized bat swooped down before it’d even set eyes on the prize: a lone Froslass caught off guard. She raised her hand to charge a strike, but too slow. Ekko’s Air Cutter hit first, forcing the living kimono to flinch. Supersonic followed suit, sending the wildling spinning into a daze that sealed her fate. Annie’s Pokeball was lobbed, aimed to bounce against the ghost’s belly before it captured her, adding one last member to the Snow Patrol.

It wasn’t the lightning fish, but it would do just as well.

Her voice had a sudden bitter edge to it. “Every single mage I’ve met has Freeze-Dry… And now the brawlers too.” There was no mistaking the distaste in her voice, which definitely had nothing to do with the move being the bane of a warrior’s existence. Nope. “No, it’s fine. Great. I love it.” Her face and tone dripped with sarcasm. Thankfully, the twin snakes put an early end to her comments.

“I’m going for a variety. I want to have a bit of every material by the time I wrap my head around crafting, and that means… a bit of grinding." Blade met beast as she finished her sentence, striking an Onix with her Breaking Swipe. It wasn’t enough – it never was with rock types -, but with its defence came a lack of speed that she could exploit to avoid his counter. One Swipe might not have defeated it, but three did.

The conversation had reached its natural conclusion, and the trickle of wild Pokemon passing by showed nothing of interest… But Annie wasn’t ready to leave yet. Far from it. An awkward silence was about as good as gluten-free bread to ‘Motor Mouth Mei’, so she decided to dig a little into the woman’s life. “So! You know what I’m up to here. What I’m training and why, and all that. What about you?” Ever-curious eyes watched Katherine, while Hocus’ more relaxed pair watched her back.

The determination to stand back up and live after the worst food poisoning known to man carried over to her character. The sword would be raised again, and it would be raised by Ultimeite!
