Player killing had its perks, but she had a different goal in the kingdom. “Hey, Ai-Ai! You looking for some materials to-“ She leapt out of the way of a psychic beam – one that would have left her spending a half-minute cursing at the chat. “One sec.”

Some of the red eyes had revealed themselves as a pair of Gastly. She turned and set her sights on one, rushing forward to cleave it one with a Breaking Swipe. The spawn went down surprisingly easy, but not for free – the Cursed Body debuff announced itself with a dark aura around her, robbing her of the move. “…Oh, good."

[attr="class","athread"]Normal types. Well, that made a surprising amount of sense. The type held one of the greatest of ranges of Pokemon, and more importantly, held some very powerful niche moves within it. She’d made the right choice in trying Aurora, but there was no time for her to congratulate herself.

The Kangaskhan charged, fists bared to pummel her to a pulp. The warrior wouldn’t let her get the chance. Her sword reached further than any arm, so the punch was intercepted by a Breaking Swipe across the body. That was enough to end a low-level spawn, and leave Annie awaiting the next.

[attr="class","athread"]Ekko recognized the Pokemon. A Dewgong had, very briefly, been a member of their camp, though Annie had found a trainer more suited for the sea beast. He could assume from that that the girl had no interest in catching a second, and so he continued his flight without an alert. He’d assumed quickly, for the girl below had seen the seal too and kept quiet. It wasn’t red or orange enough for her.

[attr="class","athread"]The warrior held her ground until a flurry of winds force the mammoth to back off. She barely took two steps before it began its next attack, much to her chagrin. The makings of an Ancient Power charged… Only to explode in its face just as the confusion wore off. Its health bar dropped into the red.

Annie smirked, sparing a glance to her partner. “Let’s finish this qu- Oooo, I want one of those! Tell me ho- Later!” Her target was already close, so she was back in the danger zone in no time. She let the ice carry her past the boss’ face and past its side, her blade charged with a dark blue that could only signal a Dragon’s attack. Breaking Swipe cleaved through the beast’s side, forcing it to topple over. A sliver of its health remained, but a cherry tap with her katana’s hilt saw to that too.

Their victory fanfare played, and the game rightfully showered them in experience and ingredient drops. Ultimeite gave a cheer of her own, her goofy grin a mirror of the one she often carried in reality. “Phew! I was not looking forward to another puzzle.”

Part of the cave’s wall receded into the floor; a marker in front of it told the party that it’d give them safe passage back to the campfire, whenever they were ready. “That’s about the end of that, but I’d say that we make a pretty good team! Maybe I’ll catch you again some time? Oh, and you’ve gotta tell me about the little fairy-type thing!”

[attr="class","athread"]Truth be told, Annie had next to no idea what spawned in Aurora. She’d left the kingdom at the first possible opportunity, skipping half of the tutorial to do so. Curiosity, and mostly frustration after dying to the stupid Honedge again, brought her back to where her journey began, searching for a prize that would make up for her continued failure.

Not that she was expecting much. The most basic kingdom, in Annie’s mind, likely heard the least interesting secrets… Unless that was exactly what the devs wanted her to think! At the very least, it was unlikely that anything in the area could endanger her, so curb-stomping beginner mobs for a few minutes would quickly give her an answer.

[attr="class","athread"]The hunt for the legendary lightning fish continued. Annie was certain that she’d seen a sea-dweller redirect a bolt to itself, and live to tell the tale. That had been weeks ago, and her search had led nowhere thus far, but any day was a good day to change her fortune!

Overhead, her Noivern flew, an eye on the sky to point out anything that looked red, white or strong. Between the two of them, they were bound to find a new Camper. Probably. Hopefully.

You seem like you’ve got the hang of things.” She watched her Pokemon take on the Mimikyu with a series of plays that confirmed her words. Once all was said and done, she offered a seasoned trainer’s advice. “Not that tough, just a bit of a trickster. Mimikyu can eat the first hit in a fight like it’s nothing, but after that it gets in a bit of trouble. Also, if yours is anything like mine, it will not let you take that rag off.”

She stopped short of humble-bragging her way through an explanation, mostly because something had caught her eye. The companion of trash bags everywhere had found its way into the garden – right into Annie’s sights. “Hocus, can you get that one for me? However you want to.” The fox nodded and stepped forward, narrowed eyes fixing on the Zigzagoon.

“Coverage is something that Hocus and Pocus are lacking… But I’m planning to fix that soon. You’re one step ahead of me there.” She barely paused at the racoon cried out, charred by a brutal Fire Blast. It rushed to fight back, but the Delphox was light on his feet, dodging and dancing out of harm’s way as he waited for the burn to do its thing.

“You’ll always have your bases covered… But sometimes I wonder if that’s the most fun. I mean, the range is great, but there’s something special about having a guy that can do a master of one or two things, compared to a jack of all trades, you know?” A beckoning call from the magician told her to throw a Pokeball and claim her prize.

“If you want to look into mastery, I’d recommend the weather gym in Lavaridge! The guy there really knows his stuff when it comes to rain Pokemon.”

[attr="class","athread"]The doors opened and caught her eye, but what sped out was far from a gym leader. In fact, she didn’t know what it was – an increasing rarity for her -, other than it was approaching her. Fast. “Wait-wait-waitwhatsto-“ Furiously waving arms did nothing to stop the attack.

Fortunately, it was only the second time that week that Annie had had a Pokemon on her face (raising a lot of small, affectionate Pokemon had interesting side effects). Flailing arms stopped short of striking the stranger or his creature, and her muffled cries turned into a deep breath as ‘Zelle’ was plucked free.

“I’m okay. I’m fine,” she said, albeit through ragged breaths. A hand rested on her heart, she let out a gentle sigh, and then all was right as rain. “First of all, I feel tricked! That wasn’t a flying Pokemon at all! Didn’t even have wings! Secondly, what was that? Thirdly… Er…” She knitted her brow. “I can’t think of a third right now, so let’s go fight! No more suffocation without my permission, please!”

For whatever reason, she’d come seemingly fully equipped. A tracksuit was par for the course with Annie, but she’d come along with a hiking backpack too, stuffed with… something or other. Not that it slowed her down any as she followed the man. What surprises did his gym hold for her?

[attr="class","athread"]Even a bamboozled boss could see when it was making no progress. It charged towards the duo, a tremor accompanying each step. Glowing tusks marked its intent to gore one of the fighters, but the warrior wouldn’t let it have its way. Annie impaled the floor with her sword, grabbing it with both hands so the attempt at stopping didn’t send her flying. The mammoth’s Double Hit should have sent her flying, but she was ready and waiting with a King’s Shield. Each blow introduced ATK DOWN to the enemy’s status bar.

“Don’t have to worry too much about getting hit now,” she called. As if to taunt her, it started charging its next move: Earthquake.

[attr="class","athread"]Arena Trap didn’t matter if neither of them planned to leave, but the Earthquake was a little harder to ignore. She had no plans of waiting to find out if the other mole clan had the same move. Running feet carried her towards the one remaining, and with one Breaking Swipe, she erased the majority of its health bar. An auto-attack handled the rest, leaving her with little more to do than try to lighten the mood.

“Anything in particular that you’re looking for out here? Just some crafting stuff, or are you hoping for a new weapon?”

[attr="class","athread"]The beast fell, and shortly after, so did its loot. The pair had earned new gear – a first for the young samurai. A timer above the timers stops nearby players swooping in to claim the prize, giving Annie ample time to give the ranger a smirk. “Innovation.”

And so she claimed her oversized fillet knife, growing one step closer to becoming Queen of the Fishes. Her katana was stowed away in her sheath, and she eyed a swiftly approaching test dummy.

Wait. No. She grabbed her katana, and flung it at the gorged bird. The game’s physics were on her side, allowing her to land a hit… And for the Cramorant to return fire with its furry friend. The blow hurt, and the Paralysis stung, but the strike had knocked the enemy off-course and it was struggling to recover…

[attr="class","athread"]The sound blast was as good a way as any to give the boss a rude awakening. Its opening roar is equal parts enraged and confused, the latter further confirmed by a new addition to its status bar. A mouth opened wide fires a flurry of Mud Bombs, but Chatter’s after-effects stop the beast from aiming accurately.

The blobs were easy to dodge and weave by… Or would have been, if not for the ice. Twice she slipped into a projectile, and true to its title, the boss ate into her health bar. The girl tutted and slid to a relative halt, digging her blade into the floor. The rock it launched out was clearly mismatched from the rest of the scenery, an unmistakable Smack Down putting an early end to the beast’s attack.

She had its attention. Or at least, as much as it could give in its state.
