The Pokemon were batted away with a swing of her sword as she ran the rest of the way through the tunnel, joining the man at the end without any further embarrassment. “Phew. Cool. Good job. No big deal. Now there’s just… that.” The tunnel connected to another chamber, much larger than before. How large was hard to tell, mostly because the floor was out of sight.

“I sense an arena. Or at least I hope for one, because damn these movement hazards.” For once she was right, as a few steps forward would confirm. There was about twelve feet’s difference between where the room began and where their path ended. If they were careful, they could peer down into a circular cavern, with no other exit, and a mammoth of a Pokemon sleeping at its centre. Any trainer worth their salt could make out a Mamoswine from above, and realise it was at least twice the size it was meant to be.

The moment the full party stood at the end of the path, it broke off, sending it and its passengers plummeting into the arena. Standing on the platform saved them from fall damage, but as the crash stirred the beast from its slumber, it was clear that there was only one way out.

The beast took a few seconds to awaken, but firing an early shot would end the grace period. “When things are looking rough, get behind me. King’s Shield’ll handle the worst of it, but I can’t keep that up forever.”

[attr="class","athread"]Mages were uncreative, she’d decided. Every single wand-wielder she’d met had Freeze-Dry in their repertoire, an especially annoying move for a draconic warrior. If they were all going to have super-effective attacks against her, then she would ensure that she could return the favour.

It was that train of thought that had brought her to the kingdom of ghouls and ghosts. Deep in the forest, she had no doubt that something was waiting to end her life. Whether it was a player or Pokemon, she was prepared – but she’d much rather the latter.

The forest gave way to a clearing, but in the Glumwood’s eternal shroud, that word held a different meaning. The trees gave way, but the field was foggy, the moon’s rays occasionally providing a dim light. Piercing red eyes occasionally appeared from the trees; whether they were part of the scenery or actual Pokemon, she had no idea.

[attr="class","athread"]“Sure, combos work… When your regular moves don’t do the job.” An arrogant smirk showed itself as she rushed in to demonstrate. Where the mage specialized in spectacular bursts of power, Annie showed off the consistent, persistent damage dealings of the sword. A Pokemon with more limbs just meant there were more targets for her to hack through, each auto-attack taking a chunk of the foe’s health as well as a bit of tentacle.

Not to worry. The game spared them the gory details.

The Grapploct’s Superpower forced her back for a second, but it realised too late that it had chosen poorly. The white glow gave away her Metal Burst shortly before she cleaved the beast in two. His halves dissolved into loot before he hit the floor. “Up close and personal, any of your moves are just as good, so I haven’t tried too hard with it.”

[attr="class","athread"]She wrapped her hand around her sword as the woman dashed, realising just in time that for once, she wasn’t the target. Wary eyes watch a fighter that seemed cautious (at best), but the Krokorok’s served as a shared distraction. Intimidation did nothing to stop Ultimeite from launching herself forward, sword raised to swing down on the beast as she landed. The earth-dweller would be bested before she gave him the chance to use his home to his advantage.

“Well then, I hope you don’t mind the company!” There was a cheery confidence to her voice, bordering on arrogance. Despite the mask of politeness, she had no intention of leaving peacefully until she’d found what she was after.

[attr="class","athread"]In true video game fashion, the churning pool slightly understated the size of the beast they had summoned. The Gyarados sprung herself free of the water, and as Ulteimeite whispered an “Oh, shit,” she realised that the sea beast was descending. Quickly. Onto her, with glimmering fangs leading the charge. Unsurprisingly, she wasn’t interested in becoming fish food, and so she planted her sword into the earth, allowing the mini-boss to feast on King’s Shield instead. The move gave protection, a debuff, and an opportunity for the Ranger to strike.

Whether or not he took it up, she’d withdraw after a few seconds, intent on stopping their foe from making another move. The retrieved sword glowed a dragon’s blue, and she ran across the length of the boss, driving a Breaking Swipe into her side as she ran. If they were lucky, that would down the beast – and if not, she was sure Oreo would handle the rest.

[attr="class","athread"]Fresh meat. Annie drew her blade as she watched the Pokémon crawl out of earth, rushing to add another nameless beast to her EXP bar. Her footsteps slowly came to a halt, however, as she drew closer, her proximity making up for the sandstorm. What she was staring at was:

Likely a confused player, seeing as she’d had to crawl out of the sands.

Her hand released a sheathed sword, though her fingers danced near it, ready to show the samurai's skill at a moment's notice. Terrera was a lawless land, after all.“My bad, I was looking for mobs. You… seem like you might need a hand.” The girl’s words were cheerful – mostly. There was a cocky edge to her lips as she offered help. “I can point you back to spawn, if that’d help, as long as you can tell me where to find trouble.”

Accelerock didn’t call for a target, just a direction, so as long as she cancelled the move before she slammed into a wall, all was well. In theory. In reality, she blitzed about halfway across before she was beaned by a flying Spheal. She hit the floor, but the momentum kept her sliding forward without regard for the danger. Half a dozen Sandshrew and Bergmite slammed and dug into her body.

She slowed to a halt, face down, at Fernando’s heat. Only her class ability saved her, Stamina making each super-effective attack hit less than the last. She remained motionless as ellipsis appeared above her head, warning the other player that she was in a menu. A few seconds later, Ultimeite lifted her head, pulled a potion out of hammerspace and necked the bottle with a ferocity unbefitting of a child. And then another.

She forced herself back onto her feet as the buff expired, visibly annoyed but still long way from death’s door. “…Death or glory,” she grumbled, a little less skip in her step as she led the way forward.

[attr="class","athread"] “For-treeeeeeee!” Annie’s arrival was announced by several sounds. First, her yell. Milliseconds later, the bang of a pair of doors swinging against walls, flung open by her arms. Next, the distant flustered flapping of many a winged beast, jolted out of their rest. Judging by the grin on her face, she held no remorse – if anything, their surprise only helped draw attention to her.

“I’m here for a battle, and then a badge! Don’t hold back now, alright?” Her words carried through the room as her feet took her further in, eyes searching for the leader, an assistant, whoever would bring her closer to another victory. Her potential fifth badge was, in her mind, a very different challenge to her usual fare. On one hand, all she had to lose was a little pride if the battle turned sour; she still had enough to walk the champion’s road. On the other hand, those same badges likely carried weight amongst the region’s top trainers. She doubted she’d have to tell the man not to hold back, if he’d been lucky enough to hear about her.

But it was fine if he hadn’t. She’d only be a little offended.
