it doesn't help that he works freelance, and that he doesn't actively market his brand well, nor promote his business in any other way. his talent on business and communication are, unfortunately, as non-existent as his connections.

"unless y'er talkin' shit 'bout my littleroot-" he stares right through gavin with a glare. "-we don't talk shit 'bout my littleroot. that's just fuckin' rude."

only after he has said things did he realize he got too upset on the littlest thing. he breaks away, reclining all the way to the back of his seat.

he tells himself that he has to fix this attitude, else he's going to lose any potential clients.

"i appreciate your concern, finnegan, but don't worry 'bout my business."

his tone was said with conviction and confidence, void of arrogance that would accompany big words like that usually.

"lately, that's all the shit i've been workin' on. most exciting thing i've been doing is fix shit for labs and ranger outposts there. can't help that littleroot's a little... close to nature."

it wasn't like the city, where innovations happen all over. some weird project would be started one year, and then another a following year. most of them were experiments meant to fail, but he still gets paid regardless anyways.

"i've also worked for more complicated shit that that. not sure exactly what you do, mister paleontologist, but surely, you'll find someone in my trade useful."

he takes out a card, holding it in between his fingers, and casually holds it over for gavin to take.

having worked with rocket scientists in their labs before, he most certainly had more questionable projects worked on. keeping his status as an ex-convict makes him hold his tongue against revealing it to get more pull on his trade.

he's not too keen on meeting people, unless they're the ones who make the effort of getting friendly. one or two was already enough, and he's not sure if he can handle more.

wolfgang convinces himself that he should finish the ride since he already paid for it.

"wolfgang volkov. mechanical engineer. littleroot."

the introduction was quick, sharp, and straight to the point. there's very little else to say anyways, especially given that they're time limited. saying the answers to the obvious questions was just common sense.

he takes a cookie from the table and hands it to the typhlosion standing behind him before turning back to his partner with the question that expects him to say the equivalent things.

"so, what's your thing?"

people were hard to deal with, moreso if it's anything like the type of people he hates so much. supposedly, they were loud, self-righteous and overly friendly, but he supposed that's better than basically waiting for you to carry the conversation on your own.

he takes a piece of cookie and raises it, as if it's a glass of champagne.

"here's to hoping you don't get paired with them soon."

the bell rings afterwards, indicating that their time is up. he shoves the cookie straight in his mouth, licking crumbs off his mouth before swiping his thumb across his lips.

"but yeah. good luck."

with that, he takes off.

"that's kinda dumb," he says with amusement and a chuckle. he's not necessarily finding it wrong, however.

to set him up with another person that works for the league wasn't in his plans, especially someone way up.

"don't worry about it. people here are enough for me," he tells her, dismissing her idea entirely. "they're easier too. can't imagine being with any of you guys either."

any chance of getting him back to the limelight was a no go, despite how much of a nobody he was. he likes the quiet life, and being involved with celebrities was enough of a turn off for him.

"well, no offense, but... yeah."

wolfgang can't be bothered to make an excuse.

pessimism often accompanies his own pragmatism. rarely do people find their partners in this kinds of events, and most simply come here to fill in the void of romance in their sad, boring social lives.

"still, find it hard that you'd be digging down deep here for those. aren't there a lot of other good lookin' people with the ones you work with?"

very recently did a promotion of someone people would consider above average in appearance make it to the elite four, as well as other names in that circle that would make good faces for the league.

the only thing one could find in a speed dating event was, as they have agreed on, other pretty faces.

a member of an elite four? wolfgang would say he's the luckiest of all for landing such a revered member of society, but only if the tone was sarcastic.

there's anxiety from meeting someone esteemed, but the dread of of being put in this situation fills him more. it's enough to tip him to a point, which gets shown with little to no resistance.

"what's the deal with you important people joinin' speed dates and stuff?" he asks crudely before he pinches the bridge of his nose as his throat rumbles in annoyance of himself.

a deep breath follows, mentally psyching himself to correct his behavior, and he's back with his composure.

"wolfgang volkov. littleroot. mechanical engineer. pleased to meet you, miss elite four."

as elijah leaves, wolfgang hurriedly tells him his orders quickly, in case the other was actually serious in his plant business thing instead of just using it to pick up people.

"a red apricorn shrub. less on pesticides. don't want that shit on my garden. also, get high quality fertilizer for me if you have 'em. i'm runnin' out!"

the color was a tossup between red and green. friend balls and love balls were on the rise on the market these days, which was sad in its own way for the former.

he's going to feel bad for the person he usually gets gardening supplies from, but this was for the sake of being nice, or so he thought.

an arm on the table holds his weight steady as he creeps forward across the table. his hand comes forward, cupping a chest underneath the suit that fitted nicely around the bust.

"well, you better give me a call later," he whispers as he leans forward.

breaking away back to his seat, he composes himself before he makes a scene at the formal party.

unbuttoning the collar of his dress shirt, he tugs the undershirt underneath to let his neck breathe from all the tight formalwear he's supposed to wear for the entirety of the night.

it'll be off by the end, he supposed.

he eyes the card, reading what was written on it, before taking it. he holds it up as he did, an act simply to showcase that he has it, before pocketing it.

"eh? sure. can't hurt to have some."

he already lives in the middle of buttfuck nowhere at littleroot, where there's already a bunch of plants. there's literally no reason for him to do so since he's not interested in it, but it might get his pokemon busy.

"i guess i'll give you mine-" he takes out a pen and a piece of paper and writes down his contact info. "-if you ever need a mechanic or something."

wolfgang slides it across the table to elijah.

"well, you can call me for something else entirely too."

after the last round, wolfgang can't bring himself to be optimistic anymore. he'd just fuck it up and embarrass himself one way or another, so he drops the theatrics and just acts himself.

"huh? you callin' me unlovable?!"

he'd say yes, but he knows that he'd just find a reason or another to make things worse. he's lived long without any. another lifetime with none wouldn't change anything.

wolfgang hands a piece of pastry to his typhlosion. at least he knows his pokemon was stupid enough to not leave him for anyone else.

"as long as i don't go home alone, then that's already a win for me. you here for love or ya just lookin' for hookups?"

he wouldn't mind the latter. he raises a brow, but his lips remain in a scowl, hiding thoughts well underneath a hardened exterior.
