She gave a roll of the eyes, timed with the protest of a single clampearl as it tried to escape from the mound of dirt her shovel displaced.[break][break]

“Do you think I'm that stupid? I know how to take care of my pokemon.” She sounded more exasperated than defensive, because she was used to Lucas' and his jabs.[break][break]

“He was underweight. Got the little guy on a high calorie diet. Multiple small meals a day, but they're dense. High fatty stuff like acorns. Like, healthy fats. A nurse at a pokemon center told me to do it,” but nothing in that diet mentioned treats. That was something extra.[break][break]

Bailey glanced back to Lucas and scratched her cheek. “I mean, a little sugar won't... hurt nuthin. Just a treat every once and awhile. Not like I let him chug those down all day.”[break][break]

Piggie Smalls was still below his target weight.[break][break]

“But, yeah. They couldn't figure out the pearl situation. Said it looked weird, but he wouldn't let them get close to it. I figured I'd just get him a better one and see if that improves anything—that, and I've been trying to keep him from straining himself, and that seems to be helping?”[break][break]

But she wasn't sure, and she dumped the dirt into the bucket where the campearl could burrow but be unable to escape.

“Whoops. My bad. Hard to tell when they're still... all shell?” Despite Tink being her first pokemon, even Bailey hesitated when it came to trivia regarding Togepi.[break][break]

Those years felt so long ago. She distracted herself by taking a loud bite of the sugary waffle cone, just to give her something to chew as the man responded to her question.[break][break]

A ranger? Yeah. That'd make sense. “Didn't they pay you guys jack shit? That sucks.”[break][break]

Something about budget issues. Something she couldn't remember.[break][break]

She was only brought out of her thoughts by Piggie Smalls sudden exclamation, followed by a loud splat as his strawberry icecream slipped from his hands to land against the ground; the ancient power had struck right against his pink nose with a satisfying smack, and that had distracted him enough for his tiny nub hands to lose their grip.[break][break]

Her eyes went wide.[break][break]

“Smalls, no. Smalls, we can get you another cone—” and that was when he screamed with raw fury, deploying a psyshock that was so intense at center of its pearl that Bailey swore she saw the ground shudder as she clutched her hands to her head.[break][break]

Not lethal, but certainly painful, as the sound of the Spoink's screech was akin to an airhorn.

Bailey munched through the poptart after giving it a moment to cool, looking almost tranquil as she watched the reactions unfolding between June and her Galarian pokemon.[break][break]

Piggie Smalls returned to her side, and when he pulled at her pant leg, she handed him the second poptart—two in a pouch was always too much for her. “Hey, remember to blow on it,” was her only warning as she passed off the whole confection.[break][break]

When her eyes returned back to June, it was in time to catch her own personal reflection. Each statement was taken at its face-value. Bailey would take those words in their entirety, and trust them to be true.[break][break]

If not, then that would just be something else to work on.[break][break]

“Well, you'll get more than plenty of field experience with me around. I never get a dull day,” and she would take a short sip of her blackened brew, taking it without milk or sugar.[break][break]

She liked it bitter.[break][break]

“Especially not with this little shit,” and unable to resist, she'd pull Piggie Smalls up from the ground with a loop of one arm. The psychic pokemon would immediately squirm, then squeal, as she blew a raspberry right on his cheek—his mouth paused mid-chew through the sugary “breakfast” treat.

I think it's cracked or something.” At that twisted angle, the accentuation of her victory star mark was visible across her skin.[break][break]

It cut like a scar at the collar, v-like divide diving to the heart with its spear-tipped shape.[break][break]

“I've been trying to keep him from battling... and fatten him up. He was doing pretty rough when I found 'em.” She took her own shovel and drove it into the ground, looking to get the work started after she saw the sand bubble with an odd persistence.[break][break]

“I dunno. Guess I wanna make up for that somehow. Make things better.”

She watched his search, letting her eyes absently observe his movement. There was no interest, just a look of fog as she felt her thoughts dislocate. Mornings were rough, and the Sergeant looked ready to retire back to bed than confront the new day.[break][break]

“Fuckin' starving,” was her immediate response to his question. “Always am after a night of drinking... least this time it was for a good reason: me.”[break][break]

Her lips pulled at the thought, curling into something proud.

“Alright, Lucas. After today, my debt will be paid,” she would say would a flat, lazy tone as she gripped a shovel in the other hand; in a stripped one-piece bathing suit, the Elite Four member seemed like she was more dressed for the beach than actual hard work.[break][break]

In the distance, by a propped beach chair and umbrella, Piggie Smalls would bounce in the shade and lazily slurp on his giant blue slushie—a big straw hat situated over his strange, malformed pearl just to provide extra protection from the sun.[break][break]

The spoink still had thick dabs of sunscreen on both cheeks, just to show that Bailey had been responsible when she had arranged for this beach outing.[break][break]

She looked to Lucas Lane with a hint of a scowl, knowing that she had no choice to finally pay off her debt. “The more clampearls we can dig up, the more pearls we can get... and after Smalls gets to make his pick, we can sell what's left and you'll get the cash. Deal?”[break][break]

Clampearls liked to wash ashore and bury themselves in the warm sands. Why? She had no fucking clue—she wasn't the scientist here.

Piiiii was a sound that registered like a punch to the ribs.[break][break]

Muscle memory harked back to a time when Bailey Cooper had been young, when she had been a child running through Lavaridge with a Togepii wedged in her arms like a catastrophe waiting to happen. She thought back to that time with a mix of fright and nostalgia, because one wrong step would have been enough to smear Tiny across the warm sands like a marshmallow smear.[break][break]

She raised her gaze just in time to see the egg-pokemon, her first pokemon, being pulled back. The fairy-type seemed more than pleased, raising its tiny arms like it was ready to embark on a rollercoaster ride.[break][break]

“Uh, no big deal... Teaching the little guy rollout or something—?” Her voice trailed, and the thought of someone kicking along a togepi had never crossed her mind.[break][break]

Bailey's eyes went from the ground and then up, following the outline of the newcomer's leg to his face—he looked like he had just bitten into a bitter rawst berry, and something in that expression made her blink.[break][break]

“Do I know you?” Or was that just her imagination?[break][break]

Piggie Smalls, seated on the bench, looked in the direction of the road-spun togepi with a smug expression before he went back to enjoying his strawberry delight—all this ice cream, all for him. He would have gloated, if not for Bailey's presence.
