This was it.[break][break]

Chubs seemed oblivious—too fixated by the cheers of the crowd, the small ice-type could swallow his stage fright as the contest came to its last round. Or, maybe, it was the occasional clap and whistle from 's walreign that soothed his anticipation.[break][break]

He sought them in the crowd, catching sight of Perse's ivory locks, and spared a last wave. It was getting close to his turn. After @iris finished, he would be next. It would be his last chance to clench victory.[break][break]

Not that he understood—the ice-pokemon was unaware of his score. He was just happy to be up on the stage, giving it his all. Seeing the happy faces of the crowd was all that he wanted.[break][break]

Bailey was hiding offstage, covering her eyes, because she felt like her gaze would be a curse upon his luck.[break][break]

The spotlight graced him, refracting light off the smooth white edges of his bowtie.[break][break]

The finale—he sucked in a deep breath, as if anticipating that this would be physically exhausting. All moves. All for one performance.[break][break]

He started with a move that would not signify a start, but a harkon back to the previous round: encore. The bouquet of flowers was back in his small flippers, and gently, ever so gently, he would breath the same ice that had encased him. Except, he would not be the target, as ice would ever so gently form across the arrangement of flowers like morning dew.[break][break]

Ice so gentle, ice so thin, a mere press of the finger would have shattered it—something that any hardy flower would be able to withstand.[break][break]

He would bounce, once, then twice. Like a ball being dribbled, each bounce would lift him up higher; then, body slam to gain full height as the small spheal would almost launch himself into the air.[break][break]

The same crystallized flowers would be thrown from his grasp and to the crowd—the bouquet unraveling to release them. Ice-encased flowers, weighed by the water, would be able to fall, not float, into the hands of those in the front row.[break][break]

But that was not all—the disbursement of flowers was only a small distraction as the spheal transitioned. He breathed, just as Bailey had instructed him to do, and breathed the cold-like breath of aurora beam.[break][break]

Yet, these bending and flowing light curtains were contained, because he alternated his focus between his breath attack and the execution of ice ball; like the very capsule he came from, the spheal, and his rainbow lights, were consumed by the thin shell.[break][break]

His first performance hadn't drawn enough of a cheer from the crowd, so maybe this little twist could make it more beautiful.[break][break]

This time, when Chubs slammed down into the stage, the ice would break and what overflowed from its fracture would be a cascade of color that would root itself through the air with its twisting, bending shape. Branching out from the ice-shape seed, maybe the northern lights could have been perceived to be a sapling emerging from a core—[break][break]

But Chubs was not privy to such observations, because as the cold mist and colors cleared, the small ice-type was curled in the display of fractured ice he had made; at rest.[break][break]

He gave a snore, as if too exhausted from the repeated sequence of moves; or, maybe, it was time for some much needed beauty sleep.[break][break]

Building ice was more complex than it seemed.[break][break]

Chubs watched the other performances, and it almost seemed like the small ice-type understood that repetition would be key for this round—or, maybe, his enthusiasm just came from the fact that he was here in the first place. The mind of a Spheal was a complex thing.[break][break]

He would clap at 's performance, and knew that the spotlight was coming closer to him. Not because he understood timing, but because of the simple logic of “spotlight mean go.”[break][break]

When light focused on the small circle, he felt his confidence swell and performed another wave for the crowd. This time, they waved back.[break][break]

Ice ball was the first move that he used, but not completely.[break][break]

As it seemed like ice was starting to take its rounded shape around his body, he would end it. From the ground to his belly, a bowl of ice sat underneath him; clear like crystal.[break][break]

Gently, he would do what Spheal were known for, and spun in place like a cloth to polish the edges. Like a trained ice sculpture, he knew when to pause this process, and when to add to his simple creation.[break][break]

Another ice ball, but this shape was not fully connected. Segmented like the quartered wedges of an orange, four unconnected sides of a sphere fell from him and to the bowl—he would spin, emitting just enough cold and just enough oomph for these wedges to soften and connect to the original shape; petal-like in their smooth edges as they fused.[break][break]

He would pat them down, one tongue sticking out as if he were a painter measuring distance with a finger.[break][break]

Ice so thin that it would seem simple to snap; he spun another ice ball and added to the process.[break][break]

Gently, gently, his soft hands and cold body would shape the petal-like bowl that now seemed more reminiscent of a flowering bulb, ready to open its petals.[break][break]

But he was not done.[break][break]

Bailey knew the cue, and when Chubs began to waddle in her direction, she would meet him on stage just so she could pass a bouquet of actual flowers—white lilies and blue roses—to him. He chomped on the bouquet and held it in his mouth as he carried it back to the crystallized flower bulb.[break][break]

And, after a moment of struggle, would set the blooming flowers into the vase-like construct; light refracting off the polished petal-like surface.[break][break]

The beauty came from the repetition, as each addition shaped it to be its current form.[break][break]

“Wah-wah!” He said as he gestured to his creation, and his pokemon cry almost sounded like he had said ta-dah.[break][break]

“Always, huh?” She said with a sigh. What a bitch.[break][break]

Bailey wondered if it was knowledge that shaped such a perspective—did Hoenn seem safer when she was younger because she had been ignorant? Had threats always crept at the far reaches of their skyline?[break][break]

She blinked, remembering that Kanto had collapsed without her notice. It was the tremors—the repercussions of the impact—that would shape her years later.[break][break]

What was that bullshit about a butterfree and its wings? That a small thing could cause a hurricane somewhere else? A state collapsing seemed like no small thing, but she would apply the analogy anyway.[break][break]

“I think I'm too young to retire. Like, most people gotta work way longer than I have. Why? Have other gym leaders hit you with that bullshit before they drop out of their position?” She said it with a joking infliction, but felt like her words struck true.[break][break]

None of them ever saved a city. Bailey had that thought just to build herself up, if only for a moment.[break][break]

“I think we're gonna be stuck with each other for awhile—Commissioner is like, for life, right?” Bailey spoke with ignorance. “And like I said, I'm stuck here. I can't uproot myself from a place like this—it's my home, yaknow?”[break][break]

As the snorlax disappeared from sight, she knew that the job was done. Now, they would have to walk all the way back... and the thought of the cold hospital was enough to make her shudder.[break][break]

Just a few more days. Then, freedom.[break][break]

“Uhhh, wanna snag coffee on the way back? I'm in no rush.” A pause. “I'm sick of drinking out of those Styrofoam cups at the hospital.”[break][break]

Fading beauty?[break][break]

“Wah...” Chubs pondered with a flipped pressed to the side of his perfectly round face...which blended into the perfect roundness of his body.[break][break]

Bailey had no choice but to stand backstage and fidget, knowing that anymore intervention would make it seem like she had a hand in guiding her pokemon—she could not do that. Not when Chubs had worked so hard, all on his own.[break][break]

It was time to take a step back, and as she put her trust in the small ice pokemon, the spotlight panned to his position.[break][break]

Adjusting his bowtie, Chubs the Spheal took a deep breath to prepare himself. A moment of silence as he breathed, summoning a small ice rod that he grasped clumsily in one flipper.[break][break]

It was his baton—he raised his flippers, as if he were a conductor, and matched his whistle to the position of his raised baton.[break][break]

The crowd had enjoyed the show of lights, now it was time for an encore.[break][break]

He cast shapes in the light of his aurora beams—clumsily drawn flowers, swaying grass, and the distorted stick-like figure of what could be presumed to be Bailey as they wandered the region of Hoenn. A young trainer with a cartoonish smile and stick limbs leading the charge, with an ensemble of pokemon following her.[break][break]

They were like a child's drawings. The bending, twisting images of the light pulled like a stroke of crayon against paper.[break][break]

Whistles guided the stream of light as it turned and bended, recreating evolution and change. A growing roster, a growing stick figure now equipped with the trademark leather jacket.[break][break]

But the spheal remained the same—a small, round pokemon that rolled, faster and faster, to keep up with the charge.[break][break]

The fading image was of them pulling away, so far that it seemed like the spheal was lost.[break][break]

Until the stick figure of Bailey Cooper emerged, pulling the caricature of the ice-type pokemon into her arms—reaffirming that he still had a place, even if things had changed. A fading smile on both faces, even if they seemed older, before the scene came to its close.[break][break]

Growth was an interesting prompt.[break][break]

After the announcement, Bailey could only watch from offstage as Chubs would ponder what to do next. She performed hand signs, as if trying to indicate what could be done. It ultimately looked like nonsense, but her mad pointing to the giant white tree seemed to register in the Spheal's eyes as he waved in her direction.[break][break]

“Do the beaaaaam—” she would hiss, hoping that he could hear. He would nod, but she wasn't sure if that was just because he wanted to be cute or because he understood her.[break][break]

Because when he looked back, he'd clap at fairy in a manner that was encouraging; yet, somehow, the expectant look in his eyes would only work to add pressure on to the recipient.[break][break]

Then the spotlight panned, and the Spheal found himself up next for the round.[break][break]

He looked to the tree, to the audience, and waved again. “Waah wah, waah?” As if he was commenting on the rapid growth of the tree in the short span of time.[break][break]

Gently, the spheal would recall Bailey's strange signals, and remember one of the acts they had practiced. With a gentle whistle, air above the small seal seemed to chill and condense.[break][break]

And from that condensed air came a rainbow-like light as the spheal summoned forth the move aurora beam. Northern tails, like branches, stretching out from the refracted light beam as it steadily, not rapidly, emitted from the small pokemon.[break][break]

As it climbed up, the ways that the arboreal twisted, turned, and stretched seemed reminiscent of a tree coming to live; rainbow lights scattering across the crowd and reaching to the open ceiling with its display.[break][break]

When the whistle came to its end, the phantom-like image of the aurora tree lingered, then dissipated.[break][break]

Flight at such speeds came with its disadvantages—it was hard to breathe in the vacuum that the extreme speed created, and it became even harder as Togekiss breached at a subtle angle upward, driving thin air thinner with each adjustment of this incline. Bailey had been told that inexperienced trainers would pass out from this strain—that the collective force acting upon the body could displace the flow of blood and leave pilots slumped against the very pokemon that helped them achieve such speeds.[break][break]

But, she had been training for this.[break][break]

Extreme Speed was followed by extreme speed, pushing the fairy to her very brink as power exhausted itself from Tink's marshmallow like body—but it had to be done. Adrenaline burned with its impossible high, letting both trainer and pokemon become in-tuned with one another. Each breath, each wing-beat, until their senses sharpened in sync.[break][break]

That could only happen from years of experience—a lifetime spent working with one another had collected into this—twenty years would not be broken by what was going to come next.[break][break]

Memories of Mossdeep may have left her frozen when the Guzzlord had made its appearance, but it would be that same memory that had told her to take to the skies.[break][break]

Extreme Speed continued to build its momentum, creating more distance, as she could see the star of condensed, unbelievable light gather from the Ultra Beast—at this distance, the creature looked more like a black drop of ink against the canvas of never-ending trees in this foreign, unfamiliar landscape. [break][break]

“Tink! Get ready!”[break][break]

Because it felt like this one would be bigger than all of its predecessors; her hands trembling as she felt her fairy's claws dig deep into the flesh to keep her from slipping.[break][break]

Extreme Speed came to its end, letting the fairy type pokemon gently glide as velocity was rapidly lost. When that happened, Bailey Cooper could breathe—she could hear the sizzle of the air, the unspeakable friction, like the smell of rain before lightning would strike.[break][break]

There was something called the motion parallax—a term that had seemed complicated to Bailey, but existed to describe a phenomena that people were all aware of.[break][break]

It was a funny name for a very simple concept.[break][break]

When you were in the backseat of a car, watching the horizon as it passed at rapid speed, objects in the distance would drag slower than those that were up close—when a plane would fly high in the sky from the Slateport airport, it would always seem to drag so slow that it could be followed with a finger.[break][break]

Because of how far away it was, the eyes would play tricks in its suggestion as to where that object was.[break][break]

She was the airplane. She was the mountain in the horizon.[break][break]

Tink built distance not to run away, but to prepare herself for what would come next.[break][break]

Because it would be impossible to avoid an attack of such scale up close, Bailey had replayed the events of Mossdeep to ponder how she could avoid them. If an event like this were to arise again, what could be done to make it different?[break][break]

What could she weaponize?[break][break]

And that answer dawned on her with its simplicity.[break][break]

She was small—so very small against the endless sky that stretched beyond her.[break][break]

Nothing but a speck of white, moving at impossible speeds. It'd be like shooting a gun at a flea. You could point in its direction, but what were your chances of actually hitting it?[break][break]

Could a creature like an Ultra Beast aim accurately, even if the scale of the attack was at such a massive scale?[break][break]

She remembered the battle with the first Guzzlord—how it struggled to navigate without bulldozing in a straight line. The creature's cumbersome anatomy would work in her favor.[break][break]

Because as the beam began to materialize, as the hairs on the back of her neck rose in recognition, she knew that the creature would not be able to easily adjust its aim. It was limited by the range of its head—up or down. Extreme shifts to the left or right would be hard to account for.[break][break]

If it wanted accuracy, it should have used the little heads upon its hands.[break][break]

“FUCK! YOU!” She screamed in the face of an impossible attack, with every fiber of her being knowing that she had the chance to dodge it.[break][break]

Just a chance.[break][break]

Extreme Speed was executed one more time, and it would drag Bailey in a drastic direction. To the left of the beam, at a sudden and sharp snap, pokemon and trainer would move at such speeds with the hopes of escaping the radius of the attack.[break][break]

Distance gave time to reach the right speeds. Height gave time to react[break][break].

At such speeds, she felt her stomach flip, and wondered if all that effort had bought them enough time.[break][break]

tldr: distance makes bailey cooper a tiny target. togekiss uses extreme speed to capitalize on that distance in an attempt to avoid the attack, moving to the extreme left.

Life at her home rolled low and slow.[break][break]

Lazy days passed with little transition, and Bailey Cooper could watch time slip without warning. Faster and faster, sand dripped between her fingers. There were few things that kept her busy when she isolated herself to this place—when work as an officer was done, and when her duties as an Elite Four member were addressed, she came her for respite.[break][break]

And she wondered if it was akin to letting her body sink into the mud; mind rutted in old memories and old traumas that rang like wounds late into the night. She would replay them, like records, over and over with an obsessive persistence. [break][break]

Some days, she could fight this pointless cycle—other days, she happily embraced it.[break][break]

There was no fear as she closed her eyes to relive what she had already survived—only frustration. Thoughts burned and churned, leaving her inflamed like that day in the ruins of Mossdeep. Could it have played out differently? [break][break]

Every time, the answer would slip away, and she'd grasp at the grains that felt like grit to burrow into the skin.[break][break]

It was bullshit. Total bullshit.[break][break]

Already brewing in these negative thoughts, she slapped the shit out of her coffee machine when its pour sputtered. It was too early to be awake, and she can feel Piggie Smalls clutch to her leg in protest as she stood in her stained sweatpants and wrinkled t-shirt.[break][break]

“Get up, lazy bones.” She would grumble under her breath to the sleepy pig. “We got company coming any second now...”[break][break]

But she refused to rush, perfectly happy to roam her home in her pajamas—bare feet tracking across the cold hardwood as she waited for her guest to arrive.

She chomped into her vanilla ice-cream, trying to ignore the searing pain that came from the cold contact against her front teeth.[break][break]

On a park bench, Bailey Cooper sat and looked at the sky. Next to her, Piggie Smalls was busy munching away at his strawberry cone—the swirl standing almost as tall as the Spoink as he eagerly lapped at the confection. The pink of his cheeks was almost obscured by messy dabs of the cream to his features.[break][break]

She does not protest at the sight. Pokemon could be free to make messes for stuff like this. She could clean his face when it was done.[break][break]

Sun cast its warm light over their shoulders.[break][break]

It was a nice day, and she figured it would be the best for the both of them to get some fresh air. The small psychic pig had a good complexion—a healthy diet and restricted use of his strange pearl seemed to be helping, but to what degree, Bailey was not sure.[break][break]

She browsed her phone, waiting for their little snack to conclude before they would continue their walk.

“Are you sure you can pull this off?” Bailey Cooper asked, kneeling down in front of her little contestant.[break][break]

Some people signed up in conjunction with their pokemon—Bailey was the only exception. Dressed in regular attire, she looked plain in this sea of coordinators. This was not her group of people, and she knew that she stuck out like a sore thumb as she adjusted her spheal.[break][break]

Chubs would be alone on the stage.[break][break]

She had nothing to do with this. It had been at the Spheal's insistence that he was entered into this competition, and she had been adamant that he would be best if allowed to perform on his own—without guidance. She had helped him construct his act, had helped him pick out his attire, but that was all that she would allow herself to do.[break][break]

Like a mother, she knew that there were times when you had to let your child go off on their own.[break][break]

If this was what he wanted, then she'd let him. “Remember, you gotta mind the timing. If you're a little bit off, it won't work—” and that was when Chubs would playfully gnaw at her hand, as if telling her to stop with all the worry.[break][break]

“Okay, okay... Piggie Smalls? I think he's ready.”[break][break]

The spoink would surround the spheal in a psychic light.[break][break]

Situated behind the tree, right behind the stage, Chubs the Spheal looked like a cannonball as he engulfed his body in ice; several complex layers building on top of one another to fully enclose the creature from harm. This was no normal ice ball, as it was intended to keep him from harm.[break][break]

Because this would be dangerous.[break][break]

“Godspeed.”[break][break]

And that was when Chubs was catapulted out of the open-roofed theater. At just the right angel, at just the right speed, a lone ball of ice would arch its way through the tight-knit network of white, pale branches.[break][break]

An announcer would speak, “Annnnd next on the roster, we have Bail—wait, sorry folks, name's crossed out... Chubs, the...Spheal?”[break][break]

Spotlights panned to an empty stage, just in time for a whistle to be heard across the crowd; it was akin to a mortar shell being dropped from the sky.[break][break]

Because that's exactly was he did.[break][break]

With a loud, shattering burst of ice and fog, the ice-encased spheal hit the stage with such a force that the ice surrounding him shattered in a brilliant display of refracting lights and snow—petals curling up from the shattered capsule as if he had been a pokemon that just hatched.[break][break]

And he was spouting a perfect little white bowtie as he looked upon the crowd with bright, gleaming eyes.[break][break]

“Waaaaaa!” He waved a little paw, and offstage, everyone would hear the sounds of Bailey Cooper sobbing.[break][break]

“THAT'S MY FUCKING BOY.”[break][break]

Piggie Smalls was too occupied by his runaway trainer. When Adam scooped the Spoink from the ground, it was done without complaint. The stubborn psychic pig would situate himself at the helm of the man's lap, as if he were the one leading the charge.[break][break]

Or, maybe it was because it was pretty cool to ride an Arcannie.[break][break]

Bailey could not stop her endless string of swears as she had forgone any attempt to control the horse—she clutched to the saddle for dear life, wondering how the fuck she had rode a Zebstrika during the Mossdeep Raid.[break][break]

But then again, there had been a lot of things she had done on that fated day that still surprised her.[break][break]

As Adam and the spoink started to draw into close proximity, it would become clear that Bailey Cooper would make no effort to reach for the reigns. “Are you out of your fucking mind?!” She'd shout, “This jackass will just buck me off!”[break][break]

Piggie Smalls would raise his tiny, nub-like arm to tell Adam to save his breath—he was no average spoink, and the crackling red light that gathered in his “pearl” smelled earthy and fresh as he prepared to utilize its energy.[break][break]

The Rapidash would suddenly find itself unable to make traction as it was suspended from the ground, engulfed in a red light.[break][break]

“Smalls!” But Bailey sounded less than impressed as she dismounted from the suspended Rapidash, not caring if she fell to the ground with a less than graceful thud—she would scramble, rushing to the spoink.[break][break]

Because that small moment of energy made the pig look pale—remnant energy sparking like a severed cable cord, lashing out with a single tendril that scoured the ground and that reshaped it—and a long ridge of raised rock sprouted up from where it struck.[break][break]

She'd scoop the spoink into her arms. “I told you not to do that! You trying to give me a heart attack? You were just starting to feel better!” And her eyes would scoured him for injuries, like a mother that had just picked up their child after they tripped.[break][break]

A weak oink would answer her question.[break][break]

“Fuck,” and that swear was spoken as a sigh as she'd cradle her hand against the back of Piggie Small's head.[break][break]

The next second, Cloudjumper would be released from the psychic that had kept him suspended... and he would continue running.[break][break]

She sensed the pokemon's aggression—it rolled off the Rapidash like a wake from the moment she mounted him. The agitated breathing, the way his body stiffened, were all signs that Cloudjumper was ready to live up to his name if she didn't get the hell off.[break][break]

Bailey sucked in a breath, debating her options as Adam stepped in to intervene.[break][break]

Did this horse know how many badges she had? Did this guy? Hell no. The Elite Four member battled between pride and common sense, and then felt common sense come out as the superior force—she didn't want to get bucked halfway to Unova, or wherever this hellbeast came from.[break][break]

“Uh... slow and nice, right?” Slowly, she tried to shift her weight. “Like... like this?”[break][break]

The horse bolted the moment her weight changed.[break][break]

“Fuck! Never mind! Holy shi—” and she had to snap herself back into position, clutching to the saddle for dear life.[break][break]

Cloudjumper jumped the fence to the corral, bolting across the wide open fields like a prisoner making an escape. “This is not my speed! This is not my fucking speed!” She would squeal, realizing that the horse had essentially kidnapped her.[break][break]

Piggie Smalls would watch his trainer's sudden departure, and would bounce with his tiny nub arms raised, as if demanding that Adam do something—and take the small pig with him.
