it’s a luxury few get to experience. in an ever-changing region, often to their detriment, the simplistic and boring are seldom talked about. but the same instances, where little happens, give reprieve to those worn down by constant conflict and tragedy.

EVENTUALLY, the drill comes to a stop. fernando seems unfazed as he checks against his phone. a bad signal, due to distance, causes a delay. after a bit longer, he calls out.

“we’re done here.”

whether it’s for gwyar, or his HEATRAN, remains to be seen. however, the pokemon rise from their loafing, shaking off their weariness as they prepare to haul the drilling rig back to the local research station.

UNLESS SOMETHING NECESSITATED IT, it would not be fernando. there is solace in solitude. and the small break in having to engage with anything aside from watch is a pleasant lull. the sound of his HEATRAN grumbling, yawning with less discipline make up for what he does not. for all his reputation and notoriety, gwyar will learn one thing.

fernando is painstakingly boring.

THE PROCESS IN MUNDANE. boring and as monotone as the constant burr of metal carving into dirt and rock. fernando says nothing throughout this phase, more than adequate to sit in the silence of the moment. his attention rest on the drilling rig’s digital display, ensuring that the values remain static.

ultimately, there’s little chance for change. his attention would be better spent observing his surroundings. keeping alert, should anything happen. but why did he need to when a gym leader already promised to keep guard. trust, at its very essence, means to relay and rely.

the battle comes to an end as his HEATRAN crumbles to its feet. while not FROZEN outright, the pokemon’s taken enough damage to collapse, evident in how its molten colors have dulled. linger flames start to die out as he recalls his pokemon from a distance.

not quite a win, but seeing as his opponent fled, means his objective is accomplished. he holds his ground, surveying the area, from the safety of behind his pokemon, until a buzz enters his ear.

“we’ll take it from here silph.”

and, the league convoy from before, is well down the road, obscured by the sudden overgrowth of TAPU BULU’s rooted spawns.

“affirmative.”

their venture this time comes with a more dispersed caravan. two HEATRANs lug the drills into AREA ZERO while his ZYGARDE takes point. the tremors from before are absent, for now, but the pokemon’s affinity for the earth is why he relies on it to scout for them.

“we’ll start drilling now,” he announces. a few last minute configurations and the drill comes to life, rumbling as it inserts its nozzle into the earth and spirals into loamy soil.

THE GROUND BECOMES UNSTABLE as tremors stir. it stops fernando in his tracks as he looks at the vast environment still before them. he put out a hand, as if to motion for the other to stop.

“perhaps this is far enough.”

an eye narrows as he tries to spot what he cannot see.

“a preliminary landing is still sufficient. we can be satisfied with this and come back in greater numbers, with more appropriate tools.”

while a pair boast speed and mobility, there is only so much the two of them can prepare for. while exploration is an itch for most, fernando finds no pride in it. to die for curiosity is to die in vain.

FERNANDO IS NO STRANGER TO THE TECHNIQUE. for what little he knows about the regis, he knows well in their spiritual inheritors. for how many pokemon boast both LOCK-IN and ZAP CANNON? several. all under his command. which is why he makes the dutiful decision to abandon his pokemon.

he flees back to his PROBOPASS and MAGNETON as the attack slams into the grounded HEATRAN. electricity crackle across its stone surface, PARALYZING muscles into helpless spasms. the smoldering burn across the pokemon’s torso and right arm is only the first of several. ZAP CANNON is the opener to a stronger volley of attacks. that’s why it’s so potent.

“immolate.”

if the pokemon cannot dodge or move, then it is already defeated. all he can do is buy time as the HEATRAN’s inner FLASH FIRE conjures up a MAGMA STORM from its molten pores. it explodes spontaneously, like MOUNT CHIMNEY, indiscriminate. fernando observes from behind his PROBOPASS’ WIDE GUARD, ready for his MAGNETON to provide cover fire with FLASH CANNON.

A SUPERPOWER IMPACT IS AN ATTENTION GRABBING FEAT. the ground quakes under the titan’s impressive weight. it’s threatening enough to illicit an actual command.

“raze.”

one word is all it takes for the HEATRAN to puff out its chest and expel a LAVA PLUME from its glowing chest. if the opponent wants to level the land then it will set the entire field on fire. if it cannot defeat the REGICE in raw combat, then at least this should ensnare the IRON TREAD horde.

his other pokemon, well behind him, take their time. artillery is not meant for straight combat. the ability to LOCK-ON from a distance is well within their repertoire. out here, in the open field, howard will find fernando much more structure then that of a narrow dewford cave.
