The trumpet sent hail and fire [m]

"Nid, stay close. Jotun. Again." A drizzle of water splashed down of the surroundings as the Croconaw spun with a violent thrash of the tail, spraying the area in water. By her side, Nid assisted the fire fighting Pokemon with a chirping squeal, a shimmering Safeguard protecting the young gator from the licking, greedy flames.

The flames showed no sign of true weakness, even as Silk spat Sand Attack after Sand Attack to smother the fire. If there was one saving grace, lots of Pokemon had escaped the sudden blaze. Zubats clung to her back, refusing to fly into smoke that would suffocate them, and the occasional Geodude was seen fleeing as soon as nearby flames weakened, but it wasn't enough.

The heat dizzied Kaida, not helped by the extra weight of frightened Pokemon clinging to her, and a layer of soot clung to her skin, broken only by streams of sweat running down her face. It wasn't just the heat harming her, Kaida realized belatedly, there was stench and a fumes were in the air. Poison air, probably only kept from true harm by Nid's Safeguard.

The fire was in the caves, and she had to kill it, otherwise she risked both a home and the raging fire spreading. That couldn't happen, never. "Jotun. Silk. Bury it, we can't let it keep fighting us." On cue, the Croconaw took on a red aura and plunged his claws into the dirt as the Sandaconda's nostrils flared. As Superpower tossed a truly enormous amount of dirt into the caves, Sandstorm battered the fires that were spreading. In an instant, the entrance was more clear, though flames threatened to approach every moment.

It was only then Kaida even noticed another presence. Another Ranger? One who had been drawn by the sudden smoke? She peered through the smoke, rubbing her eyes, and found a familiar face, but not exactly one she wanted to see. "Go away!" She had to spit the words over crackling flames, "The fire is powerful, and might spread while I'm getting to the source!" Her yell suddenly broke into a cough, the only sign so far of the toll this was taking on her very human body.

Even someone like herself, Kaida picked across the words, certain there was an insult in there somewhere, but unable to find the words for countering. If there was a purpose to a monster, was it to make a hero a hero then? How stupid, there was no point living a life where it was your destiny to die.

"Learning about me, are we going to meet again?" She asked, aware that the danger that she felt was suddenly absent, and retreating back to her comfortable distance. "I want to live in safety, where the only threats are those I choose to face. My home to not be a pile of wood. Well, it won't be a dream for long, I hope. If your dream is to be different, please. Don't be near me."

She suddenly turned her back, "I need to go to work. With someone like you, I suppose I should say, "see you soon"? See you later." A man like this, they'd be learning something about the other soon, but she still wasn't sure whether it was just a pest, friend, or beast. He still hasn't answered that...

She had to admit, seeing a familiar face was a relief, Kaida turning to eagerly greet said face. As eagerly as she could, anyway. "Orion! Yes, they are loud, must have multiplied." She had certainly left it alone too long.

The dark circles were too obvious to not notice, and her eyes widened and sparked with sharp worry, "You're tired...You could have not come. Someone else would have come, and if they hadn't, it's my fault to deal with this." She jerked a head at the buzzing windows, "Will you and your partners be fine, are you fine?...either way, you better sleep after this." She spoke more like she was ordering this to be so, foot scraping the floor irritatingly.

The buzzing only continued, and she guessed quickly, "Maybe Combee or Beedrill. We'll discover together." She huffed out a little laugh, both a little terrified of what to come and curious to see how much she messed this up. She tossed up a Pokeball and a Croconaw burst out, looking about in child-like excitement, "We'll protect this home, no worries."

It was the first time she felt threatened by a hollow expression. All at once, it wasn't snarls and bared teeth, stomping feet and thrashing tails, but a lack of anything. She felt lucky she avoided eyes, because the simple sight of his face sent Kaida back two steps, heart banging in her throat. "I see, I could, but I'm a Ranger." She answered as honestly as she could, "potential" was simply not a component she operated on, and this conversation was starting to scare her. Even with the many civilians, she felt scrutinised and studied. Snake eyes watched the man, but she felt in danger even under the protection of her family.

"I...a monster?" She considered the question, and in a sudden bout of pride, leaned forward back into the near contact she hated, "No. If we speak of monsters by what they are and do, they are inhuman and hurt innocents, which I don't...human-wise...but if we speak of monsters the way I see it, I have a point. Monsters exist for no reason, do cruelty for no reason, are are killed by the "hero" for no reason. Calling me a monster would be no different from calling Marienie monsters for eating Corsola. If I must be called something by people, I'm a beast. Are you a beast too?" She wasn't naive enough to call anything a true monster, but she needed to know a threat to herself immediately, and there was nothing more dangerous to her as another beast in the skin of human like herself.

"I'm not the type of preventing trouble, I think." Kaida admitted, watching as Ormr returned and brushed past the man, snapping his jaws in thanks for the compliment, "It's so much waiting with nothing to do."

Kaida wasn't one to suspect most questions, and she knew many people liked to talk for the sake of it, so what was the harm of answering? "Er...have you ever hunted?" Her eyes only peered at the man from their corners, watching for some kind of revulsion on what she was going to say, "I did it, to eat, and just to protect myself, when I was young...that's what I want to do. I want to catch the smell of the enemy, and hunt...cause once the enemy was eaten, they didn't come back." The corner of her mouth curved up in a caricature of a smile, showing her teeth on the very edges, "I want to hunt the Houndoom to protect us, not the Rattata...I'm simple, I think." Feeling more beast than human, she watched, tuned in to faces and body movement.

"Ugh!" Kaida cried out as she slammed into someone, spiking briefly as she found her bearings, hands clawing onto her fake ears to keep them from falling, "...I'm sorry, I wasn't looking for guests." Kaida explained hurriedly, straightening out and tilting her head as the man seemed to recognize something in her, placing a hand on her chest as she clarified, "Yes, I'm security...I'm supposed to blend in, but I guessed this wouldn't work."

"Usual Rattata, but they don't stick around, not with Ormr here." The Ekans drew forward, letting out a quiet ssss in greeting. Quite suddenly, a more cynical light overtook her, "I wouldn't know about Rocket, though. They're people. If they looked distinct like Pokemon, I could pick them out, but they're not." Her voice dropped in anger, "If they showed, I would be there but..."

Her head jerked, eyes narrowing at movement that seemed drowned in others, and she suddenly tapped Ormr on his side, sending him slithering in a ride's currently empty area. "Rat...no Rockets I see, I think they think I like pest control just because I have partners that hunt them." She scowled, teeth showing, "Do you know how bad it feels to deal with pests when I want to do things? Catch a monster? Anything..."

I am very sorry...but I seem to have let a home fall into neglect. A call went out to other Rangers, originating from a woman staring into a house where she could see bug bodies moving in the windows. A home offered for traveling Rangers, and there was no secret she'd been the last to live in it...or lack of living. Moving around so much, she had flat out ignored it, and came back to disaster. The wood wasn't terribly eroded, there was no significant damage obvious, so the League thought the property was salvageable. Of course, it was her duty, but she doubted she could do it alone with less damage.

I am asking for assistance. Any will do, thank you. Kaida dropped her arm, phone hanging limply. The buzzing rang in her ears, this was going to be a mission she couldn't afford to be merciful. The Pokeball hung in her hand, ready for use.

"Ah." Kaida's eyes flicked downwards as her voice suddenly dropped, scratching at her own cheek as a silence ran over her, "I knew a daycare, I think...not anymore. They're nice places." As quickly as the memory tried to come forward, it was over. "I'll...try and make sure they don't have to be in violence then."

She opened her mouth to say more, and a buzz sounded deep in her ears. Oh, the "date" was over. "Huh?...oh, Avery. Here." She snatched a napkin and wrote quickly on it, "If the daycare needs help, call, or any type of help." She spoke hurriedly, and as soon as she was done, clicked her tongue to call Ormr and Hema, picked up Bragi, and set off in search of her next date.

There was a certain amount of work that went into all this amusement. Firstly, they had to get all the equipment here. Then it had to run without problems. Lastly, someone had to make sure there was no interruption...discreetly.

The noise was pleasant, Kaida supposed, wandering about the games and rides. Rattata, Emolga, and Pidove. One or two weren't a rare sight, but her duty was to make sure that they didn't disrupt the guests or, worst of all, infest a ride or the machinery. In the interests of looking like a guest, Kaida donned a little pair of Growlithe ear.

They were warm.

Ormr donned a fake paint tattoo, looking sharp with skulls on his cheeks, Kaida hoped they wouldn't run if a fight turned ugly. He hung onto her neck like a scarf and she paused momentarily to raise a snack to the Ekans. Nothing had happened yet, but she wasn't naive enough to relax, keeping her eyes open for both human and Pokemon threats.

"Thank you...I'm not an expert, but yours rings nicely." Kaida replied, pausing awkwardly for a second, tapping on the table as words seemingly escaped her, "I mean it sounds nice, that's it..." She snatches another bread stick, surrendering it as Bragi whimpers and reached for it pleadingly.

"The young ones are always good." Kaida patted Bragi on the head, who squirmed from the touch like a confused cat, "Bragi's young, but has going to help me as my Ranger partner, like my others. Is he going to be your partner to?"

It seemed as the talk continued, Kaida opened up, eyes gleaming as her voice raised in volume, unaware they were on a time limit.

Kaida notices the voice first, and Bragi jolts towards the noise, big eyes wondering. "Yes he is." She answers without irony, not noticing any social faux pas, holding him up briefly. "He's Bragi." A small smile crosses her face, and doesn't disappear even as the other woman apologizes.

"It's fine, I haven't had a date in a while." Or never, really. Her eyes flick to the two serpents next to her table as humor bubbles up in her throat, "I'd say these two have more experience than me." As she talked, she reached across and, briefly holding one out in case the Munchlax wanted it, took it for herself...a lot for herself, actually. She simply figured that once her partner appeared, the food was fair game.

"I'm Kaida...is that your partner? It looks healthy!" She grins and taps Bragi to get him to look across the table, who flops down and almost purrs at the sight of another little one.

One single roar by Kjoll outside heralded the beginning of silence, leaving Kaida to stare down at the "wreckage". "Nice hunting, we did it!" She raised her arms and hugged the serpents to her, glad the mission was so easy, she didn't even have to release Freki!

Now. The wreckage. Her brief affection over, she stalked over to the unconscious Pokemon and checked on them, some even waking at her touch and darting outside in fear. They were all alive, no crippling injuries, no head injuries she'd worry about. "Thank Arceus..." She fell back on her heels, turning a head towards Annie.

She could ask more about that Pokemon, she supposed as a Ranger, she could have enough authority to be reasonably concerned...but it was this girl's pack, or perhaps camp. There was a familiarity, and it even let her touch it, she couldn't reasonably ask for it to be separated. It was fine. "May I have the Lapras ride...I don't like burdening my other Rangers."

Fine as it always was.

The swarming bees were more than enough joy for Kaida, who smiled toothlessly at the Pokemon, hoping to look non-threatening to the peaceful beings. One hovered in front of her face, inching closer and closer to the snapdragons She idly held, and she offered it up to them. She certainly wasn't going to eat them!

"Hello, I'm Kaida...you are?" She spoke fondly to the little Pokemon, hoping it would stick around, just a little longer...
