"you have got to be..." the words slip out under his breath, his eyes finding their way up the outline of the woman before him. her bob is severe and edgy, and it suits her personality just fine. "sidonie. hi." her inquiry about his reasoning for coming to hoenn rolls off his shoulders and gets lost in the wind while he returns the gaze at the drizzile.

"it's been a while." he has little more to say, his mind distracted by the movement coming from behind his counterpart. "sina, shadow sneak." the kecleon leaps into battle, her shadow whisking past sidonie and drizzile to startle the cottonee behind them. the azumarill that accompanies it will have to be left to her.

the cottonee returns with a fairy wind as a sparkling dust picks up in the air and floats toward the kecleon. she braces for the attack, which does not faze her much as her coat changes. "slash, sina." the kecleon is swifter than she might at first appear, closing the little remaining distance between her and cottonee quickly. her claws shine, their glow leaving a trail in the air as they come down across the cottonee, damaging it enough to send it sprawling into the brush once again.

this all felt so, so reminiscent.

"doesn't really feel like much time has passed, huh? still as bright and cheery as ever?"

that temper tantrum? it didn't happen, by the way! and if put in the position to deny it, onus would do just that.

is there an artist somewhere? onus' head swivels as he surveys the crowd for an artist or photographer or something to capture this moment for what it is -- a blessing from arceus or groudon or some kind of caliph or sun god keeping the world in check.

it is almost as if the lilligants control the air around them, creating an aura of safety and tranquility that can only be felt and not seen. light comes down like a rapture to take away this moment of purity, one that so many have been so lucky to witness, at least for a moment. as pokeballs fly here and there, onus feels temptation tugging at him to take part in dismantling the sanctity of the moment as the lilligants all dance around their monarch.

he tugs one from his pocket and tosses it in, knowing that it will all fade away in just a little while whether he tries to take a piece for himself or not.

"the thing about this place is that it fucking sucks, sina." onus is irritated today, by a shocking turn of events. the barista got his coffee order wrong, and then he missed the crosswalk b just a second in lilycove, and now he's here, "patrolling." being a ranger means you can't ever just not being doing shit, apparently. patrolling, doing missions, patrolling, doing missions...where does "lay around" fit in that schedule? hm? it makes him sick.

and so does this shitty ass coffee!

he tosses it toward a garbage can as he walks by, the cup hitting the rim and toppling down into the grass beside it. onus stops, eyes rolling. "mother fu-! ....ugh." he can feel all the trees judging him as he takes his first step away, so he begrudgingly stops. "fine. just...fine." he ceremoniously retrieves his trash and disposes of it properly.

"this day is shitty." he echoes again, complaining to anyone who might hear.

as for sina? she's heard it all before. she just walks on in silence, her own eyes rolling at her trainer's temper tantrum.

her visage appears more quickly than he expects it to, and it is younger than he would have liked it to have been. though age bears little dictation over experience, it certainly plays its part. he nods curtly. "unfortunately, i'm onus. my parents didn't care for me too much." it's a joke, despite being true, as he reads her mind. most people find his name stupid, himself included. parker appears ready to get down to it, so onus happily obliges with another nod and a turn on his heel toward the darkness enshrouded beyond the entrance. "let's do this." his voice is a smooth bass that hides his nerves well as he moves toward their shared goal.

"so the intel said they've seen at least 3 scientists coming in this way. i don't think they know exactly how far in the base of operations is, but i can't imagine it being incredibly far -- just well hidden. that's how i'd go about it, anyways..." his haunting past wells up in his mind once again, and he shoves it down promptly.

"oh, and uh, nice to meet you, by the way. sucky circumstances, but hey, what can you do?" he can't help that he is innately impolite, but the effort remains. he's never been one for pleasantries, as people usually knew who he was in his father's circle.

it doesn't matter. his eyes track down to the floor, searching for any signs of footprints.

the procurement of minerals teetering on the participation of everyday people such as himself feels lazy and wrong, but onus does not question it. after all, he himself isn't here to gather minerals -- rather, he is but a liberator from a siege of wild pokemon that are tormenting those that have so foolishly volunteered. the gravel that shifts beneath his feet as he enters rusturf tunnel does nothing to inform him of the tribulations that are occurring somewhere deep within the cave.

with a little bit of rustling, he pulls out the map that was given to him by his superior and his eyes fall upon the circle that estimates their location. the path that leads there is clear cut enough, at least for his eyes to follow. he looks up and over his shoulder, eyes falling upon the nickit that sits behind him patiently, licking a paw. it's cute enough to warrant a smile from the pokemon's trainer.

the air is damp, and the sound of running water can be heard. it's a cave alright -- nothing spectacular. he's been here once before, and the energy was the same then as it is now: tranquil. there's no indication of struggle going on deeper, as far as he can hear. perhaps the sound of the water masks the miners' calls for help, or perhaps they have tired of calling.

the presence or lack thereof of emergency would not change onus' course of action anyways; he must wait for his partner. in the meantime, he watches as dell continues to lick his paw contently.

the tip came in early this morning -- pokemon experiments being conducted illegally somewhere in the depths of mt. chimney. onus was available and near lavaridge, and thus he was called upon; he now stands alone with a cufant beside him, their adjacent forms casting long shadows down the entrance to fiery path. amaya is stoic as she always is, but onus is a titch nervous. it's his first time being called upon by name to complete a mission. to boot, this one seems bigger than all the others he's done thus far.

the flattery of it all cannot quell the butterflies that tumble around in his gut, their anxiety welling up into his throat until his assigned partner arrives. onus rests a hand on amaya's trunk, rubbing it gently to pass the time. the dossier report mentioned several scientists seen slipping down the fiery path late last night, a litleo and a pyroar both caged in tow. the suspicions of the townspeople of lavaridge were confirmed with their appearance, and thus the rangers were called upon.

onus is shitty, but not shitty enough to conduct experiments on innocents.

amaya flicks her trunk up to tickle her trainer's nose lovingly as the two stand by the entrance for a moment longer, awaiting the so-called "parker" that will be aiding them. the night is young, but onus grows impatient -- he wants to get in and get out.

ONUS ELIAKIM: rich ranger kid running from his family! onus hails from galar, growing up in hammerlocke. his dad is a "media mogul" and has a lot of influence over the battle tower, so the family is ridiculously wealthy. they protect their wealth over all else, and thus are involved in many, many illegal things. onus has been forced by his family to do a lot of terrible and unforgivable things, so he has run from galar to hoenn in hopes of severing ties with his family and starting anew. he is now a ranger and allies with the league, though he is not passionately connected to either group.

his questionable past still haunts him, and he probably has some contacts in team rocket, as the eliakim's have connections everywhere. things that he would have done before still tempt him, and he isn't quite as straight-edge as he'd like to be. making money is in his blood and he'll still do a lot of things he maybe shouldn't. please feel free to throw anything at him!

it's early and his head pounds, the thrills of the night before haunting his every step. the sunlight filters through the trees in that picturesque way, one that irritates his hangover but impresses him nonetheless. the ibuprofen hasn't kicked in yet -- he hopes maybe the fresh air will help.

he isn't the model version of the ranger cadet for the league, and wonders what his commander, or whatever they were to be addressed as, would do if they saw him like this out "protecting pokemon." it is easy to see that being a ranger isn't his passion, but it keeps him moving, keeps him fed, and keeps his conscious clear.

it isn't the worst gig.

his nickit, dell, strolls beside him, his skeptical eyes scanning the area for something -- anything wrong. spring is upon them, and yet dead branches still sit scattered across the forest floor, cracking with each step. onus yawns as another snaps beneath his foot.

"let's just...find a seat, dell."

he cannot imagine a market open later than a bar doing well, per se, but he does not need to imagine it. it sprawls before him, vendors vexing passersby in an attempt to turn them into customers. onus eliakim is no exception, his ears ringing with the sound of an alolan man trying to sell him sea shells as his feet carry him away from yet another dive bar. "orre's" carried nothing more than beer water, the kind of shit guys his age should be drinking.

the distaste is enough to turn him away after one beer, back into the streets of the night market. Another spewing of marketing nonsense registers in his ears as a ploy directed at him -- onus does not take the time to listen. "not interested." the streets are quieter than they were an hour before, quiet enough for a second plea from the man. he feels his eyes roll and his feet stop their disappointed trudging.

"listen, unless you have galarian beer under the table, i'm not interested. okay?" his voice is sharper than it needs to be, and sharper than he intends it to be. his eyes roll again. "sorry. just...no thank you."

his eyes leave the man's and return to their scanning of the store fronts in search of a promising dive.
