It's his full attention that catches her off guard more than she's used to. He watches her, smiles, nods as she speaks. Instead of speaking to the brick walls that tend to be her coworkers, who were more preoccupied with their own affairs than with anything she had to say, this man was actually listening.[break][break]

Despite her proper posture and her habit of keeping herself reserved or closed-off, she finds herself peeling away the stiffness in favor of warm cheeks and a twinkle of relaxation in her gaze. For the first time in a while, it seems she's enjoying herself.[break][break]

"It is a gift, isn't it? And it's what I enjoy, educating the next generation of trainers. Even if they stray from the path I'm setting them up for, I'm teaching them how to be the people they want to be later in life. It makes me happy."[break][break]

She does, however, blink in surprise and shake her head at his question.[break][break]

"All of them, equally. Teacher's don't take favourites - they all deserve my full attention and care."

Her eyes widen once again in surprise, the motion to lift her drink to her lips temporarily halted. For whatever reason, his encouragement for her to stay embeds an unfamiliar warmth in her chest. It's because of this that she clears her throat and glances away. There's heat in her cheeks.[break][break]

"I-I'll think about it."[break][break]

Fortunately, Lance turns the conversation around to a different area of her work. Something easier for her to talk about, hopefully.[break][break]

"They're smart and as much of a handful as the next - maybe more. Their parents pay a great deal of money for them to be well-educated, but they're still the same kids. If a little more entitled. But they're so young, I get to meet them before they turn into unbearable teenagers."

The sentiment leaves her lips and it wouldn't be until much later that she'd come to realize what an intimate comment that might have been. Her warmth exudes naturally, it had been an innocent exchange. [break][break]

Instead, she's drawn in by his warm smile and hesitates before returning it with her own. Such familiarity between strangers is unheard of, and yet he responds so naturally, offering her kindness and genuine praise without being asked. She's like a magnet.[break][break]

"Maybe. This has been a very prestigious position for me - something I didn't expect. I'd be a fool to turn it down or walk away."

There's a note of concern in her placid expression. It did not sit well that Hoenn was in such dire straits. [break][break]

"Just.. be careful."[break][break]

As she retrieves her coffee and they make their way to the small booth by the window, she finds herself watching the passersby outside. Her hand wraps around the warm cup.[break][break]

Her gaze returns to study his face with idle curiosity when he asks her a question. He seems to have many of them, a genuine curiosity in her that she can't seem to wrap her head around.[break][break]

"A few months, they're hoping I might stay on permanently."

Thea has always had the ability to suppress less favorable emotion while focused on something else. Her homesickness comes as a surprise merely because he had brought it up. Her duty was to her students. She was a bit of a hard-ass about that.[break][break]

"I've never been to Sinnoh. This is the first time I've ever seen anything but the wild areas in Galar. Though, Hoenn does seem to have her own mystery and... danger."[break][break]

The young man behind the counter is quick to prepare Thea's order - prompting the suggestion that she is a regular. He's even busily clearing off the table by the window she tends to sit at. It makes her smile, despite the slight shake of her head.[break][break]

"It's close to the school and it's quiet. The employees are sweet as well."

The smile she bears is a little bit sad for a moment, the twinge of homesickness making her pause in her thoughts.[break][break]

"Yes, I am."[break][break]

However, she seems to shirk the feeling easily. This was, after all, her choice. Pursuing this career had been her life dream, even if it meant giving up familiarity in Galar. She couldn't excel if she didn't pursue her dream.[break][break]

Besides, Hoenn hadn't treated her badly... yet.[break][break]

"From Sinnoh?"[break][break]

Concern wears a wrinkle between her brows but is once again dismissed quickly. [break][break]

"Galar is beautiful, as I'm sure anyone would say about their own home region. Less hot and humid, but a lot more rain."[break][break]

It doesn't take them long to stumble upon a coffee shop nearby. Lilycove had been easy to map out in her mind, perhaps she had been the one doing the guiding. Regardless, the smell of coffee is strong and reassuring. [break][break]

A guilty pleasure, perhaps.

It takes him no time to reach for the door, expressing his delight so easily on his features. It coaxes a smile from her, in response, and she dips her head as she follows him. [break][break]

Her heels click against the glassy surface of the hallway outside of the classroom. The quiet doesn't bother her much in the same way the noise doesn't. She pauses when Lance speaks, highlighting the accent she carries. [break][break]

"Oh, no, no. I was born in Galar. They asked that I transfer here to teach in Lilycove, insisted, really."

Thea's eyes flash back up to his, surprise widening them as she listens to his comment. Flirting? With her? Her cheeks tinge pink as she opens her mouth to respond, but fails.[break][break]

"I-I see..."[break][break]

She glances away, a selfish attempt to sever the connection between them for a moment. The gesture he poses is overwhelming, beyond that, unexpected. It has been a long time since she's experienced or responded to anyone's forward attempts at courting.[break][break]

That... that was what this was, right? Asher had been forward in much the same manner, but his intentions were not as clear cut as she'd liked. She had been one pretty thing in a sea of many - and she preferred more commitment and loyalty than that.[break][break]

But then Lance poses a suggestion and she's mesmerized by the smile he bears. Her own stiffness and regality falters beneath his charm.[break][break]

"Coffee?" she parrots the thought, smoothing an invisible wrinkle on her dress. "Well... alright. That sounds nice, actually."

Thea muses over his comment. She hadn't actually seen the incident, so she couldn't be certain the boy had thrown the hat at all. Perhaps there was more foul play involved than she first suspected. The thought seems to distract her a moment while Lance shifts the shelf and fishes the hat out from behind it. [break][break]

She comes back to the present only when he offers the hat to her. Thea takes hold of it quietly, fingers smoothing over the stitched logo on the front. There's a bit of dust and cobweb residue on the bill.[break][break]

"My height? Oh.. I've never been too concerned. Women aren't generally expected to be tall."[break][break]

If he had been flirting she is unaware of it, perhaps too preoccupied with her thoughts to fully consider his words. She does, however, react with indignation to some extent when he suggests lying.[break][break]

"And lie to a student at such an impressionable age? Absolutely not."[break][break]

The moment passes as quickly as it arrives, however, and she clears her throat in an attempt to clear the air.[break][break]

"He will just expect me to replicate the steps taken to retrieve it - I'd prefer to not disappoint him."

Thea studies his face a moment, watching him respond with what she can only assume is masked disappointment. He appears otherwise unaffected by her rejection, but she's sure that, in some way, she's hurt him. Or at least, bruised his ego.[break][break]

He surprises her, however, by agreeing to follow through with the walk. It's interesting, but she goes along with it.[break][break]

"Of course, yes. You can talk to me about what your plans are and what topics you might like to discuss."[break][break]

And then she delves back into professionalism naturally. Should they have risen from their seats and made their way out of the building to approach the beach, Thea would, on occasion, glance at the man while he speaks.

Oh thank god.[break][break]

Thea braces herself against a rocky shelf, the perfect place for sitting. Her hands squeeze her knees as she catches her breath. She's doing her best to not look like an out of shape older woman in front of the young and spry - but the fact remains: she's out of shape. Very clearly so.[break][break]

And, while she isn't a particularly prideful woman, admitting anything other than peak performance just isn't going to happen.[break][break]

So the break comes as a great relief when Iris suggests a water break. Even if Thea had sort of suggested it in passing when offering water to begin with. Teamwork.[break][break]

She fishes one of several bottles in her pack, unscrewing it (habit, for the children) before passing it to Iris.[break][break]

"You're tough, Iris. I don't know where you get the energy from but I admire it."

She clears her throat awkwardly, then, suddenly aware of how tense the situation between them might be. Honestly, she hadn't expected their conversation to go the way it had at all, let alone the way it had ended. Her intentions had been clear from the start: an organized meeting regarding Asher's guest speaker visit with her class.[break][break]

Now, however, they were faced with a clear attraction that had been nipped at the bud.[break][break]

"In this case.. I'm sure the mood for a walk has been otherwise impaired. My apologies."

"He informed me that I'm too short."[break][break]

She chuckles quietly, shaking her head gently as she leads Lance to the shelf in question. It appears quite heavy, far too heavy for her to lift. There is a scuffed up and well-loved ball cap hidden away in the tight space between the shelf and the wall. Unfortunately, the hat is caught too high above her and she clearly cannot shove the shelf to her advantage.[break][break]

With a wave of her hand, Thea steps aside and furrows her brow slightly, indicating her muted frustration.[break][break]

"I believe he told me he was practicing his graduation cap toss. Perhaps a little too enthusiastically, given his hat is now stuck."

While he pays and smiles and passes the time in mutual silence, Thea seems to come to her senses. Although she had not literally been entranced by the man in front of her, she had certainly been charmed. But as the dust settles and he leaves his intent with her on the table, her flushed expression rehardens into whatever sort of polite, indifferent expression she once carried.[break][break]

It did not surprise her in the slightest to hear that he was not a committed man. He had dropped hints throughout their interaction. He had literally told her he moved onto new regions the moment he settled. He did not linger in one place too long, and so it made sense he wouldn't tally with just one person any longer than he preferred.[break][break]

And she was mature enough to understand such a thing. His request was not a concerning one, but her ultimate refusal came from a different background.[break][break]

"As flattered as I am by your interest, Mr. Leivern, I would prefer to keep our relationship strictly professional. I hope you understand."
