there's something comforting about the smoke. it clings to cloaking in a heavy haze, allowing a false sense of security to ease nerves. she takes a breath, or several, in an attempt to regain some semblance of control.

but they can't hide forever. the smoke will fade, will dissipate, and she'll be exposed once again.

[break][break]

her charizard sticks close despite the cover. bodies shuffle in and out of the smokescreen and she can't tell who's who anymore. everyone looks like an enemy with one working eye and a throbbing, empty eye socket.

it's why she doesn't see it in time. the discharge comes quickly, hissing through the smoke, and lands on its marks. she yelps, electricity zapping through the body and leaving her squinting through pain. her charizard snarls, taking a daring step forward as electricity begins to fade from its body.

"give 'em hell."

the dragon's mouth opens after a moment, unleashing an inferno of flames in the direction where the discharge came from. the smoke grows thinner still.

knives come whistling through the air. the sun glints off their sharp edges, even after they embed themselves into nearby rock and dirt.

she gasps through scrambling backwards, a surprised sort of look rising quickly. another weapon whips by and upon further glance, recognition sparks into a small fire.

they're not knives... but feathers.

"shit."

she keeps moving backwards, even as the feathers continue to follow. a few find purchase in her skin, slicing through and coercing red blood to ooze out of the newly opened wounds. she hisses through the pain, through the annoyance, and tries to signal through the comms for back up.

"need some help here - we're getting ambushed!"

nothing more than static answers.

outside of the small group she's supposed to be guarding, she's alone... damn it.

she shifts to release a pokemon, whipping the ball with a flick of her wrist in a hasty throw, and her charizard comes snarling through the last of its pokeball's light.

and in an attempt to grant them some reprieve, some semblance of cover... the charizard unleashes a smokescreen as the rest of the group hurries to finish their tasks.

the longer she stays in the desert, the more it begins to take its toll on her.

sand from the ongoing storm continues to berate them, even from under the cover of his stonjourner. each gust of the sandstorm scratches her skin, irritates her eyes, and ultimately puts a heavy damper on her mood.

she raises a hand in a feeble attempt to shield her eyes. it succeeds slightly against the onslaught of wind, but her freshly dyed hair picks up the empty space left behind as it whips up into a frenzy from the gusts.

the door clicks shut behind her and she's already turning her eye toward the mentioned table.

against what's - seemingly - the end of times, she feels anxiety and dread coil up into a nauseating concoction in her body. it bubbles up like bile threatening to spill out onto sun bleached limestone. she tries to swallow the sensation down, tries to appear calm and brave and not like the afraid little cat she truly is.

it's only when Noel Parker and Niola Winchester formulate themselves as back up that she can feel fresh sea air rushing into the lungs. she gasps, gorging herself on the air until it makes her dizzy with the rush of oxygen back into the brain.

and water begins to recede as declan walsh stares down at them. despite each attack, each desperate attempt to wound and keep him from escaping, his darkrai foils their plans with a ripple of shadows. the mythical embraces its master, then, and they're gone before she can fully blink.

she can't say the immediate rush of relief doesn't feel good, either...

her chest heaves through a pained sigh and she turns, flashing Noel Parker and Niola Winchester a grateful smile.

"thanks for the back up - i really appreciate it."

as all things must end, the relief proves short lived.

origin pulse fires off in multiple volleys. two of the watery attacks launch toward their location, the pulses aimed directly at Noel Parker and Niola Winchester. her eyes widen at the realization.

she takes a step forward. a feeble hand rises and her mouth opens, dripping good intentions like honey.

her sableye jumps forward in an attempt to disable the kyogre's origin pulse from further use, but it will not prevent the devastating blows from arcing across the ruined city...

as he stares down upon her, she feels strangling fear creep up from the depths of her bones. it seeks to overwhelm, to cripple her into inaction, as her former boss takes notice.

he points, then, to Aurelie Lefevre's roaring moon and a sinking sensation rises. it ends with a well-timed crunch to her shoulder, teeth digging painfully into skin. a yelp sounds out, almost lost amongst the surging tides.

and as blood drips into water, turning muddy and rusted in hue, a familiar face blinks into the peripheral. she turns her head slightly, catching his likeness fully as Noel Parker appears from the chaos.

relief feels like nothing more than a fleeting, brief respite in the here and now, but she clings to it with trembling claws.
