as water continues to rise, kyogre begins its descent further into the crater. the ground quakes, water rushes through, and fear bubbles up with it.

civilians scramble to get away. most succeed with assistance, but she observes in horror as one or two are lost to the coming tides. her mouth opens, a scream approaches, but nothing comes out - only silence.

a volley of dark voids flies out overhead, whirling past her position and the approaching kyogre to slam into the distant form of rayquaza. the serpent falls a moment later and she turns, searing regret already coiling into her stomach. there, cliffside, a form emerges from the shadows. it's one she knows, one she recognizes.

a shaky hand rises to turn the comms device in her ear on. static fills her brain, but it doesn't seem to drown out the rising fear.

"walsh spotted cliffside."

with little to do except help civilians and other league operatives within the field, she resigns herself to the coming decision. sacrifice, perhaps, will fit her better than treachery ever did.

the charizard at her back is recalled, swapped out for her smaller sableye.

"there," she murmurs, her hand falling away from her comms device to point forward to the cliffside, to the shadows. "disable."

the sableye giggles, lurches forward, and its body lights slightly as disable tries to prevent dark void from being used against the league's forces any further... it might not help much, but there's enough to deal with... isn't there?

rising tides continue to come into her old city, sea water beginning to lap at her ankles.

"oh, um," she flounders when it's brought to the forefront. the awkwardness persists even in this odd, dimensional place, because she wanted to ice him out... forget he ever existed and shuffle on with whatever semblance of a life she had left, but it proved difficult. "things just don't work out sometimes, but ghosting probably wouldn't help."

he tosses a water bottle, then, and she shifts to catch it. the bottle teeters against her fingers, fumbling in the air, before she manages to right it and maintain the hold.

after the distant explosions, everything seemed to go to, well, shit?

mossdeep erupted into chaos as league and rocket alike began filtering back toward sootopolis. comms became too cluttered to hear, Niola Winchester's voice somewhere lost in the jumble, and she has to scramble out of the space center on wobbly legs. her charizard is released, the new ranger clamoring onto its back with an almost frantic look on her face.

even from the skies, sootopolis looks like a flooding battleground. they fly quickly, darting through darkening clouds and onslaughts of downpours to filter into the city. she lands somewhere close to the cave of origin - at least, she thinks... she had only pointed down toward the city when bodies began to look like fleeing civilians and her heartstrings felt tugged down by good-attempted gravity.

she busies herself with trying to help civilians along through the throes of evacuation, though panic levels seem to be rising with the ocean. each person she comes across looks more anxious than the last. she feels it sinking in slowly, their anxiety and fear and panic all transferring to her body until she's barely holding it together. her hands tremble as she waves them toward the safest route, carved out by MATIAS SILPH.

would ollie morales or CIAN MAHER be better suited for this? is she in over her head? will they kill her for even showing her face in this goddamn city again?

her charizard keeps a close watch, protectively curling close to her body as she tries and tries to be good and help and it can't erase her hand in this city even being taken by rocket in the first place.

hesitantly, her hand rises to turn the comms device on. it clicks and static fills her ear.

"morgan here," she murmurs, pausing to attempt to swallow back anxious nausea. "civilian evacuation under way."

[break][break]

every now and then, however, her eyes drift upward toward the sky... above the clouds and rain and stormy weather, launched satellites move into position. are they part of this? did that rocket, Mark Cunningham, plan to use them for something here? is he here now, lurking somewhere with information on her location? idly, she begins to chew at the inside of her cheek. somehow, a single question echoes louder than the rest: will the one she launched even help?

as the satellites launch around them, she stares at him. her body tenses as if expecting retaliation yet it never comes...

instead, he grabs his unconscious mouse, his laptop, and packs up to leave.

her persian snarls, legs shifting into an attacking stance.

[break][break]

the feline doesn't get very far, however, and the new ranger tries, in vain, to lunge in front of the tri-attack when it begins. she's too late.

[break][break]

what was an intended sacrifice is nothing more than a fumble, a let down for her persian as the poor cat is hit head on. its body slumps, knocked out cold, and she feels her lower lip tremble as emotion floods her body.

he escapes as the former rocket's legs give out beneath fearful exhaustion and she drags her body closer and closer across tile to reach her persian. the door clicks shut behind him, a loud bang echoes throughout the space center and beyond from the direction of sootopolis, and she feebly pulls her persian's limp body closer to hers with her good arm.

there, beneath flickering fluorescent lights and his hacker symbol's rhythmic flashing across screens, she lets out a shaky sob and buries her face into the persian's fur as tears overwhelm whatever strength she has left.

his morpeko thuds against the ground like a sack of potatoes, knocked out and left to exist in unconscious stupor on the floor. she only follows its path briefly, a tinge of regret rising at the sight of its slackened face.

and somehow, he doesn't focus on eliminating her. instead, he scrambles for a screen and keys and the entire facility rumbles with the beginning of an ill-timed launch. color drains from her face a moment later when recognition dawns.

a satellite.

both woman and feline hiss in tandem, perfect mirrors of each other's anger and frustration, as the rumbling grows louder, the foundation trembling.

"done, my ass!"

she lunges, then, for a neat line of giant red buttons between them. with her remaining good arm, she swings and smashes as many of them as she can. soon, the rumbling becomes excessive as multiple satellites begin to launch thanks to the quick pressing of any and all buttons within arms reach.

she knows deep down, however, that it's a hail mary... one she hopes will overcome the odds.

her efforts seem to be in vain as the laptop reacts as if it's alive - and, as she stares at it in expressive surprise, it actually is. a porygon-z materializes from the computer's mainframe and the sinking sensation of having made a mistake slams into her like a train.

"fuck," comes tumbling out, muttered under her breath.

[break][break]

the porygon-z traces her even through shadows, following the whip to the source. shit shit shit. heavy regret surfaces in a grimace just before the hyper beam strikes. she tries to lurch out of the way, tries to avoid the inevitable pain, but it simply follows her movement...

and each tumble and turn she makes is the wrong one.

[break][break]

a split-second decision of trying to scramble forward causes her to meet the beam's heat head on. she shrieks, a shrill, grating sound, and her body erupts with pain. the hyper beam singes the ends of her hair, melting through the left shoulder and arm of her suit, burning it into her skin. her arm crumples, burned almost down to the muscle, and nausea bubbles up immediately when she glances down to confirm her arm - her whip arm, even - is, in fact, limp and out of commission.

she stumbles forward, vision shuddering in and out through searing pain, and a spittle of rage-filled promise spills out of her throat.

is she really so different now? or can changing her allegiance to the rangers and losing an eye not really extract the violence she had been raised on?

another stumble forward and she locks her eye on the various launch buttons laying between her and him. could she...?

not yet. his porygon-z is still watching her. she needs a distraction, she surmises.

and it comes in the form of her persian trying to swat the morpeko off its paw, trying to swing the annoying mouse around and around as if it'll launch the mouse toward the porygon-z if it tries hard enough. once it's paw is relatively free and before paralysis sets in, before it can succumb to the inevitable, the persian seeks blood with sharp claws coming out to play rough once more.

despite his surprise, and slight retreat, she doesn't quite leave the shadows. there's a comfort in them, in the way they conceal the worst parts of her to leave only the desperate attempts to be good.

fear continues to bubble up despite her seemingly reluctant opponent. he had been hacking into the mainframe when she struck... it leaves room to question what else he could do, what else he could find.

dirt on her? those around her? or, worse, dangerous and sealed documents in the league database?

"yeah, what about it?"

her eyes narrow.

"you brought a laptop to the fight so."

not really, but she can barely breathe around the expansion of anxious fear, let alone form snappy one-liners.

and while she'd like to stay in the safety of shadows forever, his morpeko all but drags her out as it launches itself toward her with aura wheel. she hisses and leaps out from the darkness, red bodysuit flashing in the florescent lighting. it's familiar, etched into the files of her former life... a signature she has never been able to bring herself to give up. even now, it'll be the noose tightening further and further around her fragile neck.

a flash distracts as her persian joins the fray, striking back at the morpeko with play rough and allowing her just enough time to scramble into another shadow. there, she feels like she can breathe - just barely, but it's enough to try and quell the nerves.

her mind becomes a jumbled mess of overwhelming fear, half-hearted pep talks, and memories all crashing into each other. her missing eye begins to throb behind its eyepatch, a festering wound left behind by the price THEO BECKETT extracted when she escaped. has he told the organization? does this man know? will he take her back? will it be dead or alive?

a shaky breath escapes. she tries to calm herself, tries to console herself... but it's only when she thinks of ollie morales or CIAN MAHER fighting somewhere in hoenn, fighting for good, that she feels her anxieties and fear slightly weaken. she wants to be good like them. she wants to fight for something that matters, that will help people be free and smile and feel the wind in their hair.

and that fight starts here.

after a moment, she cracks her whip not toward Mark Cunningham , but at his laptop and the pokemon he's left by it.

she's in over her head.

anxiety rolls through the body in waves, nothing more than a tumultuous sensation to match the uneasy ocean surrounding mossdeep.

high stakes surround the entirety of this operation, regardless of her newbie status with the rangers or her tentative standing of hoped goodness with the league. team rocket crawls like roaches across the island. each one's presence - higher up or otherwise - is another nail in her already made coffin.

and even as she slips through shadows a few paces behind Mark Cunningham , trailing him as if she never left the life of crime, she feels dread creeping up like nauseating bile in the throat. do they know she's here? will they take more than just her eye this time?

fear wants to cripple her and she's quickly finding it more and more difficult to ignore.

it's only when the guards fall, when he slips into the room and she slinks in behind him, that she finds some semblance of resolve. an odd logo - his? - flashes across the screen while his morpeko wanders about the room. the small mouse gets too close to her hiding place, to the shadows she's tried to camouflage within, and she reaches slowly for the whip dangling from her hips. it's unfurled quietly, eyes darting quickly between the man and his pokemon.

and with little else to do except prove her new alignment, she tries to strike Mark Cunningham 's hands away from the keys with the whip and a snarled lip.

there's a swirling sensation of some foreign emotion threatening to bubble up to the surface, but each time she shoves it down with a shaky fist. the fear of being wrong, of things becoming bad then terrible then worse, threatens to eat her alive.

"me too."

it's unfamiliar territory, something she couldn't even begin to know how to navigate.

and he takes a step closer, a smile breaking through like sunshine after hours of rain, but she still looks hesitant, afraid.

"are you sure this is what you want?"

she wouldn't blame him if, in the end, it isn't. it wouldn't be the first time. she would survive this too.

[attr="class","giada i”]throughout his admissions, she stays quiet. whether it's out of fear of saying the wrong thing, of messing it all up, or simple waiting, she doesn't know...

but the surprised blinks come like clockwork. once, twice, thrice, and she'd swear she looked like an owl if she could see herself fully.

"you do?"

since when? has he been harboring this or is it a split-second decision because the other option is her slow leaving.

hesitantly, with a soft voice and shaky hands, she tries to lay out a response.

"i was worried you didn't want that and, like, you just wanted to be friends."

a pause mingles with the rise of a confusing mix between fear and hope and trepidation.

"i would like to be more."

and despite herself, she had always held out hope that it wouldn't last forever, that something would change and her destiny wouldn't be solitude. has it come to pass, though, or will it end up crumbling down beneath leaving footsteps and his back fading into the distance?

"more than a friend how?"

he doesn't explain in terms she exactly understands. there's no commitment, no definition of anything except a vague concept existing in a realm somewhere above friendship. it's confusing, he's confusing.
