the woman tapped her chin, mulling over her own arsenal as the masked men used two rounds of knock off. she wasn't entirely sure if she had a pokemon capable of utilizing a move that could work - but she pondered over if a viable solution was still even within her reach.

- mistress? -

cait blinked and met her hypno's gaze. the pokemon planted an idea in her head, depositing the image of a certain ghost-type.

"ah."

the woman's eyes rounded before she reached for her belt and summoned a peculiar pokemon.

He crosses his thick arms, but he seems friendly in face. "hey." The trainer does not speak much, but when he does, his voice booms deep and rich. "your pokemon have to strike my togedemaru three times without hurting themselves. got it?"[break][break]

The triangular markings are excited, pushing outward into spikes as the Togedemaru executes, SPIKY SHIELD.[break][break]

The next task would involve a Todegemaru, who was setting up a Spiky Shield. The challenge was to strike at the spiky Pokemon without damaging oneself. Easy enough, thought the vigilante, as he brought out his Decidueye, Clint.

"Phantom Force.", commanded the masked man.

The Decidueye would disappear for a moment, as the Todegemaru mounted its Spiky Shield. From behind, the Decidueye would emerge, bypassing its shield, and firing off an arrow infused with Phantom Force. Thanks to the Long Reach of this attack, the spectral owl was safe from the effects of Iron Barbs as well.

As the vigilante read the inscription, the mention of plates struck him. He remembered that his group found a plate during their underground excursion following the Megolopolan Invasion. The same plate they ultimate entrusted to Razz Kingsman . He had wondered what came of the plates, and what they were connected to.

This room and the last gave more pieces of the word puzzle to put together but the themes at play remained the same.

Wishes, Space and Time, Greed, Power, Cataclysm.

While he still marinated the larger story at hand being told his mind jumped back to the art vault of fire-types they'd encountered. The cave-art of moltres and mt. chimney spinning the wheels of his mind.

Another perch to add to the eventual ROOST.

"You know her, don't you?" He spoke to Cait, mindful to keep it in present tense. "The Moltres Girl?"

Stormy out of the limelight was one thing but the fact that she wasn't there for the birth of the twins was writing on the wall. "Did you ever see her doing anything at Mt. Chimney?" He pestered Sirfetch'd by thrust-kicking, forcing him to shield block.

In the next room he had to suppress his excitement. Togedemaru were one of Sénon's favorite non-Kantonian species. Trying to avoid its IRON BARBS and SPIKY SHIELD was easy; he ran the same (ability + move) combo on one of his togedemaru twins. "Rush it; METEOR ASSAULT!"

The Wild Duck once again closed the distance to the opposing pokémon and let his leek do the talking.

Without direct contact METEOR ASSAULT made it possible for Sirfetch'd to attack without being touched by the Roly-Poly's Barbs or Spikes.

Luckily, with no immunity to begin with Sirfetch'd (and thus Crimsen's tactics) were left uncompromised from holding the Ring Target.

she had to rely upon her persian to effectively bypass that spikey shield. of course, prior to committing to a move; the pokemon insisted on receiving some form of affection. the large furred body pressed against her, leaning lightly against the petite woman.

"oh. of course, mama cat."

cait cooed lovingly at the big-headed pokemon, a great rumbling purr escaping the feline.

the dark-type took her rightful place before her owner, eyeing what appeared to be a fat rodent. her tongue flicked out, sliding across furry lips.

"feint!"

persian's eyes gleamed, the creature pinpointing a open spot before she lunged forward; committing to a series of movements meant to 'fake out' the steel-type. her paw struck out, successfully avoiding the shield in its entirety.

From her chair, she speaks, "congratulations on climbing this far. the dark is comforting isn't it? you're concealed by prying eyes. anonymity is an oft forgotten blessing, as we've realized by way of the ultra beast war." She talks calmly, voice enunciating each syllable with refined clarity and tone. Any attempts to identify her will be futile, for the darkness around her seems... impenetrable. "your challenges will become more complex from this point forward. consider this to be the great filter of the fleur tea atelier."[break][break]

The next room would plunge them into darkness. Candles would provide a faint light, just enough to see the Polteageist in the center of the room, but not the owner, who's voice was feminine. Thomas' attempts at turning on night vision were useless. This wasn't your average, everyday darkness.

This was advanced darkness.

So they had to prevent the Polteageist from healing, force it to eat its berry, and bypass its substitute, without triggering Weak Armor. A tall order, but one they could hopefully manage.

The masked man brought out a Shedinja. The haunted husk stared down the haunted teapot. "Heal Block.", the masked man ordered.

The Shedinja would channel forth a field of effect that nullified any means of healing in the area.

The three of them didn't seem to lack for battle-knowledge nor resources, their teamwork wasn't much to speak of.

The darkness came with new standards, they had no choice to lay out their best plans together. Verbally or non-.

There was another implication too; no more pieces to add to the story. Seemingly they had the whole text, if in fact it was all one text.

With the tasks laid out before them he had a follow up ready after the HEAL BLOCK was in play.

TEATIME would force the berry their target was using into being eaten yet, no healing.

Cait would have to follow up with the damaging attacking that could bypass the substitute.

cait stalled momentarily as she took in her surroundings, her eyes rounding slightly in alarm as she was immediately put on edge. something about this place reminded her of the horror films her husband-to-be was so terribly fond of. she wondered if such an adoration for them would rub off on their children.

'now that would be... unfortunate.'

she resisted the urge to nervously lick her lips as she listened to the voice.

'alright. we should be able to make it through this,' she determined. 'we've made it so far.'

the masked duo wielded a combination of heal block and tea time. which left her with the easiest job - bypassing the substitute. cait thought for a moment and then gave a little nod.

"simple enough."

she introduced her sylveon to the field.

"Shit.", the vigilante uttered, realizing his mistake. How could he forget that Substitute blocked Heal Block? It was a costly mistake, but he quickly realized what he had to do.

The Phantom would send out his Klefki. "Magic Room.", he uttered.

The Klefki would set up a Magic Room in order to prohibit the use of Held Items, including the Sitrus Berry. With that out of the way, the plan could proceed.

So much for the high score. Just when he was starting to get comfortable doing this super temporary team thing, the dice rolls of fate landed to put him on edge.

These prestigious kinds of things usually had some kind of prize for a perfect run didn't they?

He didn't realize he was so invested until they made their first mistake.

Looking over to the lead for this round they seemed to understand their mistake and amend it.

in the aftermath of their failure, cait experiences a twinge of worry as well as an undercurrent of frustration.

'did i mess up here? maybe i - ...'

the utterance of 'shit' puts her somewhat at ease as her gaze shifts to one of the masked figures. her sylveon peers over its shoulder at her, their tendrils forming something that vaguely resembled a '?' as they tilted their head to the side in bemusement.

"you're fine, sylve," cait assured.

her hypno gave a little shrug before urging for a repeat performance. another command was issued - with some hope that this would allow them to pass this test.

"disarming voice."

TOXIC SPIKES are scattered across the Fleur Tea Atelier's floor. You can hear the sound of a coin being flipped before it is pocketed.[break][break]

"i thought my time was being wasted here— but i finally have some visitors." The voice is muffled somewhat, obscured by some covering of fabric across the mouth. Then again, it is impossible to discern who this person is in the dark. "here's your challenge. if you fail, don't cry when you go home empty-handed. springtime blessing, bah."[break][break]

The mysterious man explains the challenge. Any attempts to find or identify him through light or physical touch will result in him disappearing into the dark.[break][break]
