Saturday night descends on a city that insists sleep is for the weak. Spring is here. As far as the public knows, there is no impending disaster threatening to destroy Hoenn. For many of Hoenn’s denizens, life is good. It’s just another weekend. Paychecks have rolled into bank accounts. People have the night off. It’s time to party.[break][break]

Michael Navidson’s never been the sort of man who goes in for parties. His heart’s in the right place, he enjoys being out of the house, but his mind has always been business oriented. With a kid brother to feed, there wasn’t any time to party with all his friends who went on to be college students or big time Pokemon trainers. He’s a man chronically unequipped to have fun.[break][break]

Yet still, he knows he has to try.[break][break]

Looking at himself in the mirror, he sees the dark bags under his eyes. The pale tint of his skin. Ever since Mt. Pyre, he’s lost himself. Some part of him died with his little brother’s Gyarados. At least his clothes are clean and the lights are still on. There’s something approaching hope.[break][break]

“Pull yourself together, Navy.” He says to the man in the mirror. “Come on. If you’re gonna drink, at least don’t drink alone.” Pause. There’s hatred in his voice when he speaks again.[break][break]

“You’re better than dad.”[break][break]

He pulls on his jacket and steps out into the cool air of the evening. Spring’s here, but Slateport’s still a port town. A cool breeze comes in from the sea, even down here in the depths of the city. A quiet shiver runs down his spine, like the city trying to whisper a message he can’t quite hear.[break][break]

When he sets out, he doesn’t know where he’s going. Not to one of the fancy bars he imagines he’d find Melody and her other high class friends at. Not a nightclub, where he can’t hear himself think. Street by street, the city gets just a little dirtier as he walks. At last, he stands outside of a door.[break][break]

Ritual. Navy’s heard about this place. Been in the neighborhood a couple of times pursuing leads on cases. It’s a place where bad business can go down. It’d be better for him to go elsewhere.[break][break]

Yet he feels compelled to go inside. He steps into an old, comfortable looking bar. This place has weathered the years with admirable, enviable grace. He sits down at the bar. His eyes aren’t focused. Any experienced bartender would be able to tell at a glance his eyes were distant, rather than drunk.[break][break]

“Beer, whatever you have on tap. A tall mug of the stuff.” He puts down a few pokedollars to go with the order, never making eye contact. His voice hints at how bad he wants to force that poison down into his body, as if it can kill the storm of grief brewing inside.

”ain’t got much beer.” he’d given up on craft brews. he was no Naomi Sato or Zev Harcourt , and he’d always been fine with that really. a short venture had proven that no, he didn’t need that extra order. that wasn’t his crowd.[break][break]

his crowd was bourbon snobs, and then people like this guy who just wanted whatever you could put in front of them.[break][break]

”but what's here is cheap.”[break][break]

he opened the cooler and pulled out a frozen mug, not bothering to ask, because the kind of beer he would pour was only palatable when it was too cold to catch its true flavor.[break][break]

he poured, tossed down a coaster and set it in front of him. ”tall mug o’ the stuff,” he repeated with a smile, amused by how he’d put it. he didn’t ask about a tab or a card.[break][break]

he also didn’t linger, wiping away a few drops from woodgrain before the towel went over his shoulder and he returned to cutting fruit a respectful distance away.[break][break]

after a moment, he asked, ”so how’s yer night goin’?”[break][break]

“Good lookin’ out, boss.” He says with a mirthless smile. He picks up the poison and he drinks. It’s cold. Colder than hell. Just like he likes it. Navy isn’t some booze snob. He really, truly, would drink whatever the man put down in front of him.[break][break]

“Well, I’m alive.” He says with no enthusiasm. “No meteor in the sky. No major crimes. Everyone important in the League forgot my number, so no calls to punch above my weight class.” The Drunkardius Maximus, in its natural environment, will always overshare. It is the law of the land. A monomythic truth as old as fermented bread.[break][break]
The creature simply assumes that Bartenderus Rex, the king of this ecosystem, will listen.[break][break]
After a long drink, he sits the mug back onto its coaster. Sighs. Life really will be good once this stuff starts to hit his bloodstream. A dream of a better world, blurring his brain into believing these lies about being alright.[break][break]

roach gave a smile at all the blessings listed, though the last one was little curious. ”sounds like a decent day in hoenn, my friend,” he joked. however, it was truer than the sky was blue and unpredictable.[break][break]

major crimes were going on just a couple of meters below detective navidson’s feet, all day every day; but roach wasn’t nervous at the mention of the league. ritual had been untouchable for decades, even through its waves of public scrutiny.[break][break]

”yessir it is. bit slow, but that’s just how it goes sometimes, don’t it? gives me time to think.”[break][break]

it was also slow there every day and night—at least upstairs, where he still had some true semblance of control over his business. team rocket had become a colossal thorn in his side, in the wake of that not-having-a-fire-extinguisher situation no less. as a result, no one in their right mind wanted to work there.[break][break]

”it’s roach, by the way. good t’meetchya.”

“Careful, man.” Navy manages a smile. It’s weak. A little pained. A soldier’s smile while he’s sitting in a fox hole and listening to the sound of bombs going off just outside.[break][break]
“The night’s still young. Still time for, I’unno, a dragon to burst through the door.” Sometimes, you just had to tell jokes to yourself. Remind you that it could always, always be worse. He takes another drink of the slop in front of him. It’s good, cold slop, at least.[break][break]
“Navy.” He returns with his own name. “Well, Navidson. But you’re not my doctor or lawyer, so Navy will do just fine.” Half the time, he forgets his own name. Simply exists as Navy. He likes it that way.[break][break]
