The people around you look like they belong to an old civilization. Busily, they work at constructing what appears to be a temple or tomb among the great dunes of this place.[break][break]

When asked, a worker says, "We are creating a great protector. Eons ago, a great star fell from the heavens and landed here. We are finally able to harness its power. Go. Take a look!"[break][break]

You enter the incomplete tomb to see a large chunk of some unknown purple material. Red veins pulse throughout it like blood—or poison. It emanates a great power. Before it, several boulders are set against each other.

the desert held a special place in priam's heart. adventures with previous rocket beast turned head scientist clayton to explore the ruins that almost killed him and underboss cillian still felt fresh in his memory.

to see the start of the construction of it in the simulation surely felt surreal when he's living the moment.

"this seems nostalgic," priam comments as the worker shows them the star. "it almost makes me want to make wristbands or somethin' outta this."

it's a passing comment that makes priam wonder if it had been part of his daydreams or if it's part of the sea of insight he's had access to after the trip to the tomb of route 120.

he steps forward to look at it more closely as he finds himself surprisingly comfortable around its presence. for a moment, he's willing to bet that the rocket beast with him felt the same.

"your call on what we do with this, boss." does zev like being called boss?

Zev scanned his surroundings, feeling a mental itch. Cloudy dregs of a dream surfaced in his mind: a deep, poison-filled well and beams of magenta light. He shook his head to clear the image and turned to Priam.[break][break]

"You're right. It feels familiar."[break][break]

Surveying the arrangement within the tomb, Zev found his eyes drawn to the purple chunk of vein-wreathed ore.[break][break]

"Do we have any information in our database or scientific reports about what this material could be?" he asked, reaching out to touch it.[break][break]

All of you come to and see that the mysterious material is pulsing. With every pulse, the purple chunk begins to manipulate the spatial elements of reality around it and yourselves. Paranoia begins to settle in... before the scenario shifts.

"a wishing star..." priam absently answers.

he's been too familiar with it despite it being the first time he's physically seen it.

"used as a conduit to induce the dynamax phenomenon in a pokemon, although it requires a power spot to function."

priam is surprised with the practiced words coming out of his mouth, snapping him back to what he was originally supposed to be acting as. his expression shifts from somber, to shocked, to awkward.

"i think we studied this with... i'm blanking on names, h-hold on!" he crosses his arms as he tries to think deep, trying to get a realistic answer from the pool of names that comes up. unfortunately, there's none until he's forced to blurt out a name. "silph? nah! can't be him."

the vision interrupts priam's musings until words no longer come out of him. it leaves him flinched at the sight, and the next thing he realizes was that they're in an entirely different scenario.

"huh?"

the plaque gives them instructions, and priam turns around and understands the prompt. "but i was sounding so smart! i didn't want that to end too soon! i've just lost my mojo 'cause of this stupid ditto."

with a groan, priam forces himself to walk around the room, kicking and stomping on everything until the prompt is met.

Zev's attention snapped to Priam when the words Dynamax and power spot fell from his mouth with an ease that suggested familiarity. They were unfamiliar terms, however — at least, based on what Zev knew of Rocket's science research.[break][break]

Priam's scramble for an explanation only suggested the League knew something Team Rocket did not.[break][break]

"What are you talking about, Conrad?" the Beast asked, tone slightly exasperated. He was not about to admit his own ignorance of the topic.[break][break]

Before Priam could answer, however, the simulation shifted and the scene changed. Zev stared, uncomprehending at first. He raised his eyes to the plaque. Revelation dawned on him at once, followed quickly by welling frustration.[break][break]

"Let's get this over with," Zev agreed before turning to the nearest object and kicking it over.[break][break]

"i... i dunno!"

the honest answer gets forced out when he fails to come up with an excuse.

the final whack from the rocket beast finally brings a ditto to come out of its hiding. it transforms into a hole, something that priam doesn't even know was possible.

"you know how we get weird feelings of nostalgia after waking up from that tomb? it's one of those things!" this time, it was triggered by the sight of the wishing star.

he had, after all, worked intensively with fernando during their twenty year stay on galar unbeknown to him.

priam continues talking while he moves, and even as he contemplates on jumping on the ditto-made hole. he sticks one foot first, trying to see if it was just an optical illusion, and upon finding out that it wasn't, steels his resolve for the fall.

"maybe i'm actually a genius in disguise, y'know, and people just don't realize it yet. well, i do, but that's just the natural thing to-"

the only thing that shuts him up is him forcing himself to drop down.

Zev stared at Priam as the other man continued babbling. He could not deny the strange feelings that lingered after the battle at the Ancient Tomb. It seemed, however, that other people had a stronger recollection of what happened there than he did.[break][break]

All he could remember were some poetic tales of knights and heroes, a strong urge to protect the man known as kyle lopez, and the blinding image of a Pokémon sewn into a tapestry at Hammerlocke.[break][break]

Zev stared down into the hole as Priam kept talking. He, too, stuck a foot out to test if it was illusory, but it really was a hole. After reminding himself they were only in a simulation, he jumped.[break][break]

Priam's prattle ended abruptly as gravity took hold.

The younger retorts, "what does the truth matter should one's ideals be compromised?"[break][break]

The RESHIRAM and ZEKROM rush toward each other to clash in lightning and flame.

he lands, and the scenario explains itself.

"speaking of nostalgia..."

they're met with another clash before them. it's a fight of two opposing parties, with them as the third, unrelated party that gets to back up one of them as the deciding factor.

it feels like priam has been in a similar situation before.

"truth or ideals..." he repeats, making it easier for his brain to digest which of the choices they were being forced to choose between by the simulation. "it's... truth, right?"

that's the objective of the simulation: to figure out the truth of the world. priam had always been the type to stick with instructions given to him, and out of these two, one was closer to what they seek.

Zev raised a hand to shield his eyes from the brilliant light of Reshiram's fire and Zekrom's lightning. He weighed the two options in his mind.[break][break]

Truth was a malleable thing, something he discarded or ignored whenever it was convenient. The importance of ideals, though, was closer to his own beliefs. Zev stuck to ideals of his own making no matter the circumstance. They made him who he was.[break][break]

"Ideals are more important, of course," the Beast said, making his choice.[break][break]

"of course!"

he had always appeared to be idealistic. it would be his choice too if he was forced to make a decision on the spot, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case inside the simulation.

"but wouldn't going for the truth be more practical in our case?" he asks, prying for the rocket beast's reasoning. "we're in the simulation to know more of the universe after all."

in a way, priam's ideals were concerned more about finding the truth of the universe.

he has objectives he wants to fulfill that won't be achievable by any normal means. any piece of the puzzle, even if it was just a gleam of reality, would help.
