Nights like this one, Elisabeth departed her apartment in Sootopolis to linger on the coastline of the island city.[break][break]

The single crystabloom that had flourished here evaded her sight; some part of her wondered if it still bloomed here, but hidden, lest her new patron Wo-chien devastate its fragile petals with her ruinous touch.[break][break]

Though here, in the starlit solitude of the lapping waves, that deity's presence became a subdued, quieted thing. She glanced about herself, tentatively secure in her own isolation, before she knelt by the water and languidly raised a hand.[break][break]

Pink mist coalesced at her fingertips, rosy as the petals that used to bloom in her old flower shop. It glittered around her in the semblance of a cloud, perfuming the air with its sweetness.[break][break]

Some part of her still didn't understand what that power meant to hold -- what it did to people, or was capable of achieving. All she knew was in moments like this, it calmed her in a way few other things did.[break][break]

It was a private ritual, or at least, it had been. Until now.

Their sense of self had been rattled– uprooted by the creature who had attached itself to them. By their injury in the deep sea. By everything that has occurred in the last months.[break][break]

This disruption simply happens to be the most glaringly obvious.[break][break]

“Where are you goinnnngggg?” they whine, but tapu koko doesn’t deign to make any response to them. The island spirit continues to zip through the Sootopolis streets and down to the quiet shoreline.[break][break]

“You won’t find any more shards down here, you know!” Even this does not deter it, so with prolonged mumbling and grumbling, Fern follows.[break][break]

Under the glow of moonlight, the water lapping at the shore, and reflecting against the old, white stone is a calming sight. Not that it does much to put Fern at ease. The darker coloration of the tapu koko allows it to blend easier with the dark, though not wholly. As it drifts out over shallow waters, there are glimmers of faded orange.[break][break]

“What’re you looking for?” they ask, far more curious than before—much to their annoyance. The admin stops short, though, at the familiar figure in the near distance.[break][break]

They squint through the dark at Elisabeth Fiorelli . But Fern is reluctant to expose their new attachment, and by consequence, their hand more than it already has been. So for a moment, they only watch her at the water— as sleepless as they find themself too.

GUARDED WATERS

MISSION

STILLWATER BUBBLES ON QUIET NIGHTS. these pockets of air, so miniscule individually, become a sight to behold when they work in tandem. each one is a scream from the great beyond. the last words of those who have moved into her domain.

the realm of the forgotten.

when another dares to intrude, the ocean dies. this concerto is only for them. others, will find nothing more than a human and her strange quirks. tonight should be no different.

but there is one among them that does not belong.

suddenly, sootopolis’ coast starts to churn. rumbles with the arrival of a creature that is not meant to be seen. it remain underneath the surface but its intentions are clear. the MISTY TERRAIN pools like morning mildew, erratic pink lightning drinking up the briny moisture.

The sensation of being observed prickled at the back of her neck, causing Elisabeth to whirl around at the shadows around her. "Who's there?" she called, and the ocean frothed and churned in reply. Her hand curled into a fist, silencing the mist that pooled from her fingers.[break][break]

Though there was no hiding what the waters revealed, now.[break][break]

Roseate foam rolled over the rising tide, spilling over the coast in a wave of pink mist that blanketed the ground. Beneath it, a silhouette that Elisabeth recognized but rarely saw in the flesh stared at her with its blue eyes.[break][break]

Why reveal yourself? she wondered silently. What manner of creature would summon you?[break][break]

FERNANDO SILPH? Surely not. Even he wouldn't dare to travel this deep into Sootopolis... would he?[break][break]

She rose to her feet, turning back to wherever the imagined intruder was as her heart raced.[break][break]

"If you want to escape this MISTY TERRAIN, show yourself," she announced, her voice taking on a steeliness that those in Rocket would recognize. "Step into the light, before I drag you out of the shadows."

Was this what you were looking for? they think, though Tapu Koko likely cannot hear their pondering. The petal pink surf rises and flows outward as if whatever is causing it knows they are here.[break][break]

Like it knows what they follow.[break][break]

As if to answer the wash of pink that rolls across the uneasy water and laps the shore, bright light splits across the darkened sky in a deluge that shoots toward the damp sand of the shoreline and crackles underfoot. There is no apprehension in Fern’s steps as the ELECTRIC TERRAIN of the Tapu Koko cuts through the other, because in the passing days they have learned that they will remain unharmed.[break][break]

It is the threat that gives Fern pause. An uneven canter in their heart that eventually levels out as familiarity takes hold. It does little to quell their interest or their confusion.[break][break]

“I could suggest the same of you,” they respond with a coy twist to their tone, though they do little to remain hidden. Their brows climb at the voice that reaches their good ear, though, simply because it is one they know rather than a stranger's. “Though this is a surprising turn, Underboss Fiorelli.”[break][break]

Their laughter follows. An amused sound as bright and sharp as the sparks that dart and flare around them in jagged fragments. All this talk of shadows and light– it matters little, because Fern has become a source of the light itself. And they find it to be terribly revealing. Though they have always enjoyed being seen, in this instance they feel far too exposed.[break][break]

Fern is not so foolish that they would turn away from her entirely, but their eyes do drift out over the water–or rather, the tumultuous sky above. [break][break]

Intrigued as to whether or not their attachment might present itself as well. “How strange to find you here at this hour.”

Laughter of that cadence evoked familiarity of its own, reminiscent of the same cool amusement that she'd most associated with Admin Bee -- BARNABY FINCH. Its distinctions were enough to parse through the identity of her intruder before Fern revealed themselves, as if glowing with the desire to be discovered.[break][break]

The sea likewise frothed behind her, desperate to be noticed by the electric being at their side.[break][break]

A tension that had gathered in her shoulders abruptly released, like a storm prematurely denied its fury.[break][break]

"Admin Delaney. What an unexpected meeting, indeed."[break][break]

What Elisabeth knew of fern delaney came in passing conversations, curt nods in the Rocket Headquarters, papers with the admin's name that fell in front of her with accolades that suggested their rise in rank had been well-earned.[break][break]

"It seems the moonlight sees fit to illuminate one of my secrets." Her own eyes flitted over them, thoughtful, before she ventured, "And perhaps one of your own?"[break][break]

It felt like a dance, each tip-toeing around the other in search of the right way to navigate these rocky waters they'd stumbled upon.

MISSION

ENCROACHING ON THEIR TERRAIN WARRANTS PUNISHMENT. territorial disputes of old have long been settled by the deities. to infringe on previous agreement is to tempt the wrath of the ocean itself.

who would question their authority on a sea bound island?

coarse bolts steady into a mimicry of the ELECTRIC TERRAIN. however, the pink hue does not promise an advantage to any particular element. nature is multi-faceted. it covers all aspects of life.

the tumulus water parts ways to reveal TAPU FINI.

it looks no different than it always has. empty eyes, beautiful with every shade of pearl and seashell but void of life. a warden who oversees the lives of generations has seen enough to render even the most charming person complacent.

death is not the end, yes, but it does not warrant a jubilant welcome.

NATURE’S MADNESS is a concentrated arc of serrated energy. like a spring, it bounces across the ground, snaking closer and closer until it stops short of the other party.

the purpose of punishment is to correct mistakes through pain and retribution. tough love.

not annihilation.

Their own shoulders sagged, head rolling to the side as they considered her words. “It would seem so. Though it comes as little surprise to me that you have more secrets than the rest.”[break][break]
Any pretense of skirting the actuality of the matter was foregone as Tapu Fini surfaced. Lifting from the waters, imposing in a level of elegance that the frenetic energy they’d come to associate with Tapu Koko notably lacked.[break][break]
AGILITY bolstered Tapu Koko’s speed as the lash of NATURE’S MADNESS sought them out. This was not the sibling that Tapu Fini knew, and so it does not adhere to the territorial claim that was laid. Even as the controlled attack halted inches from Fern’s feet, Tapu Koko used nimble speed to cut in front of them. [break][break]
Fully emerging before the surfaced Tapu Fini with a lick of temper. Offense at the supposed audacity of threatening its chosen. Yet even as it shifts protectively, curiosity is evident. [break][break]
Its own siblings were a frustrating blank. A set of question marks that stretched out into a vast unknown. What plane they existed on remained undiscovered, because Fern wasn’t sure if Tapu Koko was even meant to be where Fern had met it.[break][break]
Were you lonely? The question Fern often considered asking it. Is this why you’ve uncovered this for me now?[break][break]
Another bubble of laughter burst around them, and they stepped to the side—out of Tapu Koko’s protective shadow.[break][break]
Their eyes fixed on Elisa, a brow lifting as they observed the underboss. “Well, this isn’t the typical company you’ve been keeping as of late.” A hand settled on their chin. “When did this happen, Elisa?” A curious trill, a mirroring of the patron they were tethered to.[break][break]

Like a thin line separating sanity and madness, their competing TERRAINS met together in a tumult of static and shimmering fog.[break][break]

To be left exposed like this by her patron, without her consent, left a silent fury storming inside of herself. Where fern delaney found amusement in the Tapus' antics, Elisabeth felt only the burden of unwanted vulnerability.[break][break]

"Official Rocket documents note that Tapu Fini is dead," she remarked in a cool, clipped manner, doing her best to stifle the indignation that threatened to compromise her. "The League believes this too. The best secrets, I find, are those that are not widely spread."[break][break]

The quirk in fern delaney's smile, and the lilt in their voice, betrayed entertainment as much as curiosity. Not hostility.[break][break]

She needn't make an enemy of them if she didn't have to, she reasoned.[break][break]

"You're clever enough to be appointed an admin in our ranks. I imagine you understand why knowledge of a dual Avatarship, never mind one to a presumed deceased deity tied to one of our greatest enemies, would not be readily exposed."[break][break]

Lies and truths wove into each other seamlessly, easier for her to voice than wholesale fabrication. Nothing she'd said was untrue, but the implication whispered nonetheless: this matter was above their paygrade. Better to feign this secrecy was Rocket's reasoning, and not her own.[break][break]

She shifted the conversation to them, carmine eyes analyzing the avian figure of Tapu Koko for the first time. She couldn't make out how it seemed to interact with Tapu Fini, or how the two viewed one another. It was not how she imagined family behaved, in her limited view of their affairs.[break][break]

"Your patronage, however, has wholly taken me by surprise. I take it you have reasons of your own for this secrecy, Delaney?"

THE ATTACK FIZZLES BEFORE THE OTHER TAPU. when it does not respond as expected, the TAPU FINI stays its hand. it lasts for the entirety of the conversation, probing with its stare.

only then does it realize what this pokemon is.

furrow brows—learned behavior from its coveted avatar—just the pokemon with another volley of NATURE’S MADNESS. like spry fingers, they leap from various angles, smaller than an intentional attack but still potent enough to sting.

the eldest sibling is always one to investigate. it is their right—as are all family matters.

just who is this?

[attr="class","star2"]“Of course I understand,” Fern retorts, a sharpness slipping into their voice for a moment before it smooths over again. “It makes perfect sense why the League should be kept unaware.” They are not a fool to be taunted with the idea that they might be clever enough– they are clever.[break][break]
“What of the rest of Rocket’s upper brass, though?” they ask, the hitch of their smile growing wider as they strive to piece together her thoughts and motives. Her need to keep quiet. “Are the rest not suited for this particular knowledge? Surely it would be a boon if utilized properly under the correct circumstances.”[break][break]
They observe the Tapu Fini coolly– a flicker of interest glinting through the pale seafoam of their eyes before dissipating. There is a flash of teeth, all cheshire-like coyness. “Unless you deem the rest of the lot unworthy of knowing your cards?” They can understand the desire to be an island unto oneself.[break][break]
They are not unlike in this ideal. Fern has always been autonomous–long before they were ever tied with Rocket. Before they ever climbed within the ranking– they maintained their own dealings and enterprise. A one man show.[break][break]
It was all that was necessary.[break][break]
Still, though, it is scintillating to see an underboss hold such knowledge without divulging to any of the others. Even in confidential reports.[break][break]
They tut playfully, their words a chiding coo. “Whatever would our fearless, noble leader think if he discovered this?” Their hand gesticulates in lazy turns, rotating at the wrist as they spin their thoughts. Fingers curling inward to examine their nailbeds until their glance flits up to her again. “Unless at least Walsh knows?”[break][break]
“Well, I suppose the report simply has not been sent yet,” one shoulder rises and falls with a simple shrug, unbothered. “Only for those who need know, of course. I find it…distasteful to announce something without a clearer picture of what purpose it will serve. Or why it has tethered itself to me in the first place.”[break][break]
It is something they don’t understand. Something a piece of them still resents. “I wish to know why it is here. I am just…biding my time for a moment.” Why them? Though they suppose it may be no more than a case of like calling to like.[break][break]
It certainly is a strange bird.[break][break]
Another commonality.[break][break]
Idly, they watch as Tapu Koko studies Tapu Fini. Like a petulant younger sibling, it chases the darting movements of the prod from the elder. Regardless of what world it comes from, it is consistent even in its petulance. Where Fini is composed, it is frustrated.[break][break]
It draws closer, but it is not calm in the way it does not attack. In fact, electricity crawls over its shielded pincer-like arms. At the ready, should it be necessary.[break][break]
“This isn’t Hoenn’s Tapu Koko. If that wasn’t already obvious.”
