Haina Desert - Pokemon Sun & Moon

A VAST DESERT LANDSCAPE dotted with rocky structures and monoliths. Curiously, they almost seem humanmade, though there are no signs of people here. Shrubbery and turquoise crystals are encrusted throughout the bright and sweltering dryland. Occasionally, you may stumble upon rocky terrain that is difficult to traverse.[break][break]

Mysterious obelisks with missing seals are situated throughout the desert. No one knows why they exist, or who made them.

Frank watched from the peak of a sand dune as two groups of Pokémon battled on the broad desert plain below him. He wasn't familiar with either species; one was tall and slender, while the other was broad and bulky. It seemed, at least, that the latter was winning their clash: more of the former lay unconscious on the sand.[break][break]

"What do you think, Brando, Kathy?" Frank asked, addressing his Wigglytuff and Krookodile. "Looks like those orange ones are going to win the fight. I wonder what they're fighting about."[break][break]

The two Pokémon at his side uttered noncommittal noises.[break][break]

"Yeah, hmm. I don't know either."[break][break]

Several individuals of the larger Pokémon species broke off from the main group as the battle wound down. They started up the sand dune toward Frank, prompting him to stand up a little straighter. His instinct was to flee, but the Pokémon looked haggard and weak.[break][break]

"You think you could take 'em, Brando?"[break][break]

The Wigglytuff gave him an exasperated look, then opened his mouth to SING. Almost at once, the strange Pokémon collapsed where they stood, having fallen into a deep slumber.[break][break]

Frank whooped, pumping his fists into the air. "Great job!" He threw a Pokéball at the nearest one to capture it. "I bet you could've taken all of them."[break][break]

Brando rolled his eyes while Kathy snickered.[break][break]

Incineroar grumbled happily, stretching under the desert sun. Xiura gazed across the arid desert landscape, trying to discern the distance between them and their destination before setting forth down the hill, trying to go around the Buzzswole and Pheromosa that were battling nearby.

Although Incineroar was in his element, Xiura was not. On one hand she longed for the comforts of her small bubble tea cafe back in Lilycove City. Reading a book curled up in the bay window with pillows and a hot cup of tea sounded so inviting right now. On the other hand—adventure! Despite the heat, the aridity, and the sweatiness of it all, she wondered what kind of challenges they would face in the desert. Already her partner Frank was finding adventure in capturing one of the Buzzswole pokemon.

“Urgh,” she grunted as she tripped over a group of turquoise crystals in the sand, badly twisting her ankle. “Ow,” she winced, clutching at it. Her Hatterene hummed in a chiding tone, using a quick Heal Pulse to soothe her injury. Xiura stood again, gingerly placing weight on her healed ankle. “I suppose adventure comes in all sorts of packages,” she said, comforting herself. “Right now, it’s a twisted ankle. In a couple minutes, there could be a dust storm. A twisted ankle is better than a dust storm.”

A tremor ran through the ground. Not a dust storm, then. "Frank?" she called out.

Frank was making his way down from the dune toward Xiura when he, too, felt the ground begin to quake. The sensation traveled up his legs, throwing him off balance so that he, too, fell to the ground.[break][break]

"What's going on?" he wondered aloud as his Krookodile helped him back to his feet.[break][break]

This was his third trip to the Ultra Desert, and so far, the main troubles had been the heat, dehydration, sandstorms, and quicksand. Not earthquakes.[break][break]

By the time Frank reached Xiura's side, the quaking had grown louder and more intense. "You know, I think we should probably—"[break][break]

Suddenly, from out of the ground, an enormous Orthworm burst forth, its mouth open wide and aimed straight at them.[break][break]

"RUN!"[break][break]

Xiura screamed as the Orthworm barreled towards their motley group, getting up and starting to run alongside Incineroar and Hatterene. She couldn’t be more thankful for her Hatterene’s healing power at such a decisive moment.

Unfortunately, Xiura started falling behind the group, her strides not nearly of a length to match that of her Pokemon. Hatterene noticed and TELEPORTED with her in short spurts, maintaining their distance but unable to gain any more.
[break][break]
“That way!” Xiura pointed towards an obelisk. Perhaps the obelisks had a base that the Orthworm could not penetrate, so the trainers and Pokemon could take a moment to regroup; then they could prepare their defenses to strategically attack and subdue the aggressive Orthworm.
[break][break]
Xiura and her Pokemon were so focused on their goal that they did not notice the subtle dip in the sand at the base of the dune. Xiura’s boot got stuck, as did Incineroar’s foot. Hatterene looked on helplessly as she also sank into the waterlogged ground.
[break][break]
“Quicksand?” Xiura asked, before they were all summarily sucked beneath the surface.

Unfortunately, Frank and his own Pokémon fell victim to the quicksand, too. "Not again!" he managed to yell before being sucked under.[break][break]

Thankfully, his landing in the tunnels was less painful; plenty of soft sand had piled up on the ground and cushioned his fall. Groaning, he rolled to his feet and wiped himself down.[break][break]

"I'm getting too old for this," he said, attempting some levity. Then he looked around for his companion. "Are you okay, Xiura?"[break][break]

Frank reached out a hand to help her up.

"I’m fine, thank you,” Xiura said breathlessly to Frank, accepting his proffered hand and getting pulled to her feet. As Xiura righted herself, she also tried her best to knock the sand from her clothing, but it was a futile effort. Giving up on that, she looked around at their surroundings. It seemed that they had fallen into an underground tunnel with torches along the walls. A mellow golden light radiated from one direction, originating from a very large chamber. Xiura couldn’t tell from this distance whether the walls were composed of metal or sand.

As they wandered closer to the source of the light, they found a strange, hollowed out chamber of golden-hued sandstone, a ceiling of glass or other transparent material overhead to let the daylight in. In the center of the room was a large sun dial, the triangular blade at its center casting a stark shadow. Faint ripples of prismatic color seemed to flux across the glass occasionally. “I wonder what this room is for,” Xiura said, turning to Frank.

"Whoa," Frank breathed as he and Xiura set foot in the strange room. Pausing in the entryway, he took a moment to admire the glass ceiling and the sundial in the center. "No idea."[break][break]

Trailed by his Pokémon, he finally walked toward the large device. He touched the sundial, expecting a reaction, but nothing happened. However, now that he was closer, he did notice beautiful filigree and embellishments along its edge and surface.[break][break]

Leaning closer, Frank peered at what he thought looked like writing. "Clockwise to go forward; counter-clockwise to go back'," he read aloud. "Huh. I wonder what it means."[break][break]

A long, large shadow suddenly darkened the chamber. Looking up, Frank shouted in alarm upon seeing the giant Orthworm peering down at them from the surface. And then, much to his consternation, it started to bang its snout against the glass.[break][break]

The ceiling seemed thick enough, but how strong was it really?

The Orthworm kept banging across the glass ceiling, rainbows rippling across its surface with each dull thud. “That doesn’t sound good,” Xiura said. A crack appeared in the glass, spidering across the surface. Suddenly, the Orthworm fell through, mountains of sand starting to pour into the room with it.

Incineroar bellowed at the Orthworm, eager to meet a strong challenger. He strutted about, flexing, before rushing at the Orthworm. From the way that the Orthworm had easily broken through the glass, Xiura knew this wouldn’t be an easy fight. It would make sense to weaken the aggressive Pokemon first with a strong attack, and hopefully deter it from attacking further. “Incineroar, use Malicious Moonsault!”

Incineroar growled, a gleeful fire in his eyes. Flames licked up from his belt up to his shoulders, covering his torso with a raging blaze. He leapt into the air, crashing into the Orthworm’s face and igniting an explosion at the same time.

The Orthworm wobbled in place, then roared in pain and outrage, shaking the entire chamber and causing the sand to pour in faster.

Frank shouted in alarm when the Orthworm broke through the glass ceiling and fell into the chamber, sand cascading in curtains all around them. He scooted around the sundial, hoping to put as much distance as possible between him and the aggressive Pokémon.[break][break]

Xiura was quick to command her Incineroar. Frank ducked just before her Pokémon's explosive attack filled the space.[break][break]

"Kathy! Give 'em a hand, will you?" he hollered.[break][break]

The Krookodile leaped onto the sundial's flat surface and swung her tail in a BRUTAL SWING. She struck both the Orthworm and the jutting, triangular blade, hard enough that the latter swung partway along an arcing groove.[break][break]

Suddenly, the elaborate runes along the sundial's surface glowed with brilliant light. Frank stared, shocked, as the very air in the chamber shimmered. Something invisible hooked him right behind his navel, and he felt a violent jerk from that location—hard enough to startle him, at least.[break][break]

He blinked, and suddenly, the Orthworm vanished. The glass ceiling was whole, not a single crack in sight.[break][break]

"What happened?" he blurted out, bewildered.[break][break]
