Out in the caverns, balancing between the lines of the known and unknown, Felix was slinking through the shadows of AREA ZERO. A mask ate his face, black clothes strangled his body, all with he purpose of concealing his identity.

It took nearly an hour, but eventually, one was found.

He pressed his back against one of the pillars of rock in preparation. It was hard to make out details between quick glimpses, but Felix made do, scouting out their position, as he'd done time and time again. The woman was a ghost, her blonde hair flowing behind, her steps exuding a level of grace unfounded beneath the Earth's surface. Altogether, it made his gut twist.

There is beauty in the distance between two entangled soul. Like a veil, it obscures the ugly, leaving behind only a silhouette of what was, of what could be.

She moved like the very ghost he believed her to be, gliding through the silence of the caverns with a dignified solitude.[break][break]

The heaviness of her black cloak whispered around her, the obscured features of her face now made visible as she pulled back the hood to better examine the strangeness of her surroundings.[break][break]

He'd find no trace of the carmine glare that had pierced through him during their last encounter. No raven locks spilled over her shoulders to tarnish a golden-haired memory he'd once cherished.[break][break]

Yet there were glimmers, here and there, distinguishing that woman from the one he saw now. Those hints demanded caution.[break][break]

Perhaps the clearest was in the Roselia that walked by her side, a now-Shadow Pokemon that had formerly been her eternal companion within the Petalburg Woods.[break][break]

The flowery creature's petals had blackened and turned bloody; a sinister aura emanated from the Grass-type like an intoxicating perfume, and though her mistress's own resentment was a more subdued thing, its bitterness clung to her as something faint, but tangible nonetheless.[break][break]

"Prim?" she murmured softly, and the Pokemon tilted towards her like the woman's presence was sunlight to bask in. "Shroud us."[break][break]

It took mere moments for the SHADOW MIST to drift outward like some twisted manifestation of SWEET SCENT, its aroma hauntingly enticing even as it clouded their surroundings in darkness.[break][break]

Enough differences from the fabled underboss he'd exchanged with colored the conspiracies creeping into his mind. This was just another woman, he told himself, not anyone worthy of their time.

And yet, his gaze remained trained on her figure, watching as it weaved through the fabrics of space without the typical caution most employed in a battlefield of warring factions and scientific intrigue. The crimson Roselia was the final nail in the coffin.

If not useful, he'd bloody his hands for the promise of peace alone. Everyone needed their therapeutic releases, anyway.

Diffusing his body into shadows, the admin slinked behind the cover of crystalized pillars, taking caution to keep sight of the pair, while also maintaining discretion. It was only after they neared a more open space that the attack would trigger.

Out from the opposing side of the cavern, shadows stretched out like tendrils, weaving through the blanketing shadows, piercing outward in spears. The SHADOW SNEAK not only looked to strike the woman's back, but immobilize her. Providing enough time for his entrance.

How well this mirrored their first encounter.[break][break]

The familiar click of a gun pressed intimately close. The sight of a Gallade she well-knew weaving through the darkness, a SHADOW SNEAK ghosting in front of her. The voice that threatened her with such flat intonation.[break][break]

"Felix." She greeted him with simple acknowledgement, utterly lacking in emotional resonance. "What a nostalgic welcome."[break][break]

She did not move. She did not have to.[break][break]

The breath that left her lungs caused a rippling effect in the shadow mist, its inky filaments now glittering with pink-hued light. They painted the surroundings with streaks of rosy-fingered dawn, beguiling and sweet as they swept through the vicinity with dangerous allure.[break][break]

"You've returned from Kanto."[break][break]

His Gallade would find another creature had joined her from the shadows, Wo-chien's slithering silhouette emerging with a SHADOW SNEAK of its own to defend its sole Avatar.[break][break]

"Do you plan to kill me this time? You failed before."[break][break]

A faint smile creased her lips at the irony of this, the visible manifestation of two gods all that protected her against the man-made gun in his hands.[break][break]

Grief comes in parts.

There is the denial that stretches the skin, maintaining the dignity of personal fantasy. It cages this crafted reality, preventing escape. If it never does, reality can't take shape. it can't harm what's already fragile.

Then there's the anger at its eventual release. The desperation of grasping at the freed fantasy slipping through the cracks of one's cage, only to understand the folly of assuming the possibility of preventing the inevitable.

Then an inner voice slips in. It debates the pointless, weighing whether there is truth in what is known. It is at this stage that grief begins to take shape, morphing with the arguments battering against the skull, all until its growth becomes unmanageable, weighing against one's back, and folding over their shoulders. It is here depression swallows the unfortunate. And it was at this stage that Felix awakened once more, his widened eyes speeding through all stages in milliseconds.

His lips remained paired with silence. There was no beginning, nor ending to the profanities he craved to scream. But his eyes said it all.

"Did I?" she replied, remaining frozen in place. This time, lilting amusement lifted her voice with its bittersweet sorrow. "You'll have to be more specific."[break][break]

The eddies of pink mist drifted past her with a reassuring scent, one that reminded her of the flowers she used to tend back in the Petalburg Woods. There had been a tall, dark-haired man that used to watch her in her gardens, too, but he'd stopped visiting her a long time ago.[break][break]

When she breathed in deeply, it was like drinking that memory in, only to breathe it out and purge it anew.[break][break]

"Which version of myself am I competing with? The woman, or the monster?"[break][break]

Those were the only two versions of her he'd ever understand. People liked their tidy little boxes, and their tidy little labels. She'd learned that back in Kalos. It made the world simpler for them.[break][break]

It still didn't make the betrayal sting any less.[break][break]
