SUNNY DAY brightened the cavern thanks to Gunner's Typhlosion, who fought in the thick of battle alongside Lance's Ferrothorn. Flames filled the space between thorny vines. [break][break]

The Volcano Pokemon pivoted, aiming a LAVA PLUME at two advancing Iron Crown. The Steel-types screamed but pushed through to retaliate with PSYSHOCK and PSYCHOCUT. [break][break]

Lance was right—better them than a bunch of civilians who couldn't fight. As long as he and Gunner kept the horde of Paradox Pokémon at bay there, they could prevent the loss of any more innocent lives. [break][break]

At least, that was the idea. But the number of Paradox Pokémon stampeding toward them was slowly increasing, and they only had so many Pokémon of their own. [break][break]

"Then we need to create a barricade. Force them through a bottleneck so we can pick them off one by one," Gunner reasoned. Removing a Pokéball from his belt, he released his Mienshao. "Elaine, set up some defenses here!" [break][break]

The ferret chirped and summoned a ROCK SLIDE. Boulders crushed several foes in a half-circle around the men and their Pokémon, piling high for protection. [break][break]

A gap in the wall allowed only a few Paradoxes to dart through, fodder for Guinevere's flames. [break][break]

appearing once more from its PHANTOM FORCE shedinja flies forward, silent as the night as it drags its SHADOW CLAW through the swarm.[break][break]

The use of POWER WHIP to shape the stony barricade was highly effective. Gunner's Typhlosion and Mienshao now faced off only one Paradox Pokémon at a time. They deployed moves like THUNDER PUNCH and DRAIN PUNCH with accuracy. [break][break]

Still, they could only keep going for a short while before exhaustion set in. [break][break]

"We should probably try to scare them back deeper into the chasm," the agent said to the Ranger. "Got anything that can make the horde scatter?" [break][break]

After first recalling his Typhlosion and Mienshao, Gunner selected a new Pokéball from his belt and released its resident. His Blaziken emerged in a flash of light. A quick activation of his Mega Accessory encased the Pokémon in another halo of brilliance. [break][break]

"Up on the wall, Caelia!" Gunner ordered. [break][break]

She hopped up onto the boulders and unleashed a FLAMETHROWER upon the horde below. [break][break]

Caelia's MEGA EVOLUTION ended, restoring her regular form. Gunner offered her a word of praise before Lance slapped his shoulder, drawing the agent's attention to the other man. [break][break]

Gunner offered the Ranger one of his usual smiles—reserved, thin-lipped. "You too. And I'll keep that in mind." [break][break]

Because Lance was right: they had made a good team. Perhaps if Gunner ever had work to do in Lilycove that he needed Ranger assistance with, he would reach out. [break][break]
