During his wanderings in the strange city, Zev ran into an unlikely figure. Cillian Quinn hugged the shadows of a prism-like skyscraper, a sullen look on his face. Zev paused, debating the advantages and disadvantages of approaching the underboss when he knew Cillian no longer trusted him. [break][break]

But in that bizarre scenario, a familiar enemy was preferable to an unknown one. [break][break]

Before approaching, Zev scanned their surroundings. All he saw were Megalopolans hurrying to and fro, seemingly occupied with their ordinary lives. No other human face graced the crowd as far as he could see. They were perfectly alone in public. [break][break]

"Quinn," the Rocket Beast called out as he neared Cillian. Zev wore his usual suit and tie instead of the green uniform he'd fallen asleep wearing, and neither mask nor Toxic Chain clung to his head or neck. "Are you real? Have you seen anyone else here?"

Cillian's dreams were often nightmares. But this nightmare, though it featured the dreaded Ultra Megalopolis, saw him whole of body and free of chains. He does not feel safe, but he feels as if he can breathe again.[break][break]

When he summons the SHADOW MIASMA to wreathe him like a shroud, he could have wept. He doesn't.[break][break]

Instead, he finds shelter in shadow, and explores a city barely recognizable from the one visited in the Ultra Wilds. It seems lively, now.[break][break]

The sight of Zev Harcourt makes him tense. Not truly realising that they were real, he assumes the Devourer to be another manifestation of night terrors. But when the Beast speaks to him, Cillian frowns. Reassesses.[break][break]

"As real as you are, I suppose."[break][break]

The second question is easier.[break][break]

"Plenty, but no one I recognize. Can't quite focus on them." A realization. "This isn't a normal dream, then. Strange."

Zev eyed the SHADOW MIASMA that hugged Cillian's form. Originally, he thought it was just the shadow of their surroundings cast upon the other man, but it moved when Cillian did in an unnatural way. [break][break]

"If you're here, then that means you were taken too. By the Megalopolans," the black-haired man concluded, frowning. But he hadn't seen the blonde in the room with Velmos, tied to everyone else by their Toxic Chains. [break][break]

"You're in one of the other wards, then. Dummy or Weakling?" Zev hadn't been able to recognize Cillian through the projection conjured by Tera Crystals.

He shakes his head.[break][break]

"I don't think the Megalopolans are here by choice."[break][break]

They wore chains too, after all. Perhaps they'd merely submitted more eagerly to the influence of whatever the hell the 'Never-Rot' was.[break][break]

"Mm," Cillian grunts, affirming Zev's suspicions. He had hated the title at first, WEAKLING, but they'd placed his husband in the DUMMY ward. Either it was meant to be whatever insulted the prisoner most, or their captors had poor judgement. "Weakling. Sato and Zeppelin are, too." He doesn't mention his sister; she was no brass. Let her escape Harcourt's notice. "Temp's in Dummy. You got any familiar faces in yours?"[break][break]

There are other questions he wants to ask of someone from the UGLY ward, but he starts with the obvious.

Zev's frown deepened at Cillian's observation. "You're right. They and the three Pokémon wardens serve the Never-Rot, whatever it is." [break][break]

The underboss gave too few names for the number of prisoners Zev had seen in the Tera Crystals' projections. It was possible Cillian recognized Naomi Sato, Shred Zeppelin, and Tempest Quinn by the sounds of their voice or distinct physical features that weren't their faces, while he was unable to identify the others. [break][break]

"Fiorelli, Beckett, Cross, Bee, and Delaney are with me in the Ugly Ward," Zev answered. Like Cillian, he did not deem it necessary to name everyone, especially Neffatari Nzingha. "There are a few important League personnel, too: freya morningstar, John Sullivan, and Michael Navidson." [break][break]

Then the Beast paused, deciding how best to proceed. In the end, the more information he shared about their circumstances, the higher their chance of escape. "Velmos has been compromised. We met him in the Chamber of Desires, which is on a floor above the wards." [break][break]

He remembered the platform descending down to the cells of Ugly Ward after their near-scalding shower.

His expression turns grave as Harcourt lists many of their Rocket colleagues. Both of his fellow underbosses, most of the admins. The majority of Rocket were compromised. Was declan walsh doing anything about it?[break][break]

"Calcifet's in with me." He scowls. "I'd have slit his throat if it wouldn't lead to the same fate."[break][break]

Remiel Calcifet was a traitor, after all.[break][break]

"He's with them, then?" Velmos being a cannibal, he'd always unsettled Cillian. But the underboss appreciated him as an ally to Rocket, and news of the organization's heavy losses concern him greatly. "Damn."[break][break]

An understatement.[break][break]

"The Chamber. What was it like? What happened up there?" A pause, then an olive branch of information: "If you didn't get to see, we all got thrown into a pit full of mochi and some - creature."[break][break]

He leaves out the details of his injuries, his shame.

News of Remiel Calcifet's presence in the prison meant there was a high chance of even more League VIPs in the other wards. Zev guessed that their masks must have remained affixed to their faces for the rest of the day, though, otherwise Cillian would have known more names. [break][break]

"The Chamber is a circular room with a machine in its center. There's a mask on the machine that looks like it's been Terastallized. Velmos said that looking through it would reveal our deepest desires, but…" [break][break]

Zev paused. There was that nagging feeling again. [break][break]

"It wasn't anything I didn't already know." [break][break]

He listened to Cillian's description of the pit, recalling the pulverized corpses that fell through the hole in the center of his ward into a space beneath the floor. "That was your punishment, then?" he asked. "To fight the creature?" [break][break]

Without Pokéballs and Avatar abilities, fighting a Pokémon—even with a large group of people—was extremely dangerous. [break][break]

"How many died?"

"Our punishment was to clean it." He can still remember the sickly stench of rotting peach and sweat, the feel of it beneath his hands as he groped in the dark. "I think that thing was their idea of a bit of fun."[break][break]

At their expense.[break][break]

He shakes his head when Zev Harcourt asks for a body count.[break][break]

"It was pitch black; couldn't see anything. Only knew Temp was there 'cause I heard his voice. He's alive."[break][break]

Not unharmed, but Cillian leaves that out, too.[break][break]

"We saw these weird... flesh-tubes when we were being brought back. I don't know if they're part of the Never-Rot or what, but..."[break][break]

He shrugs. It felt important to mention.

Clean it? That kind of punishment struck Zev as more degrading and petty than actually punishing. Perhaps that was the point. [break][break]

"Flesh-tubes," he repeated ponderously when Cillian mentioned them. He didn't recall seeing anything like that himself after the Ugly Ward's shower. However, Cillian's comment did bring a different detail to the front of his mind. [break][break]

"There were other masks," Zev said. "After we left the Chamber of Desires, we passed through this room where Megalopolans were assembling three masks using Tera Crystals. They must be the ones we were working on before we were made to play the game." [break][break]

The trust/forsake one, he meant. [break][break]

Zev's hunch that there was much more beneath the surface had grown considerably with the information Cillian revealed. [break][break]

"We should look for the others while we're here," he said to the underboss. "Separately, though. We can cover more ground that way."
