"Thanks for letting me use your washing machine."

The words were uttered with absolute contempt and through gritted teeth. He hated that he needed to come and crawl to Chu-e Choi of all people for assistance, but his options were limited. There was absolutely zero way in hell we was going to Grigori Sokolov 's apartment to borrow his washing machine, given the grunt's living situation.

Hell, Howard wasn't even sure that Shred Zeppelin owned a washing machine. Temp and Cillian would've been nice, but Cillian Quinn and Howard were having a 'bad day' as it were.

"Even if it's a bit..." Howard peered at the bright orange washing machine. "...sentient."

Evil. This washing machine was an affront to mankind. It reminded him a lot of a certain Roto-TV in a certain Rocket Beast's house.

The house would have certainly been cleaner than the last time howard slayte was here.[break][break]

No mountain of empty bottles and half eaten bags of take out. There was still a mildly stale scent clinging to the air in Chu-e's home. The ROTO-WASH sat with it's eyes closed, content to cycle Howard's dirty underwear. Shame there wasn't a matching dryer.[break][break]

"It's no problem." Perched on a wooden chair, Chu-e stared absently at the spinning clothes in the machine. He was neat and pressed, if a bit dressed down. Nothing flashy today; just an old and stained band T-Shirt three sizes too big and a pair of ugly plaid sleep pants.[break][break]

A bruise, mottled in greens and yellows and purples, took up most of his face. A bandage stretched across his face, to help set the broken nose still healing.[break][break]

"Do you want anything to drink?"[break][break]

Behind Howard, a bell tinkles. A Skitty, small and orange, peers up at him with tail held high. A fancy collar denotes her as "Sprinkles'.

It'd be a cold day in hell before the admin trusted anything Chu-e gave him. The former underboss was a snake, and specialized in poison and extracting truths. Regice would melt before Howard ever trusted Necrozma's mother; the one who had created the current threat that Hoenn faced.

"Don't skip on my behalf, though." Howard's eye inspected the mottled bruise like a a connoisseur of art inspecting a masterpiece. "You look like you need one."

Howard's eye flicked to Sprinkles for a moment, before flicking back to her owner.

"Where'd you get those bruises? Area Zero?"

Chu-e had wandered off. If that was his punishment, then it served him right. Despite their shared goals, Howard did not have to like the Scourge.

Chu-e only gave a small hum of affirmation, eyes still not leaving the swirling machine as it worked.[break][break]

"Michael Navidson punched me." The sooner that seed was planted the better. A truth twisted, as Chu-e was want to do.[break][break]

Sprinkles sat down by Howard's feet, tail wrapping around her paws for maximum cuteness. She didn't mew, only stared with that coy look that cats liked to have on their faces. A small rumbling purr started in her chest before she leaned over to try and rub her cheek against the Admin's leg.[break][break]

Chu-e blinked, then seemed to snap out of whatever self-inflicted trance he had been in. Sitting up with a heavy sigh, blue eyes flicked over to gaze at howard slayte. It was guarded, as per usual, but cogs were clearly turning behind the surface.[break][break]

"What happened out there?"

Howard leaned down to scratch Sprinkles. Fingers used to unearth relics gracefully gave the kitty a masseur of a lifetime.

"Where? In Area Zero?" Many things. He had gotten a mountain thrown at him by Regirock. He had gotten jumped by Mesprit and Eris Halla , he had waged several battles, and he had lost much. At the end of Rocket's forceful push into Area Zero, all they had to show for it was a handful of maps and objectives.

All Howard had to show for it was a wounded Aerodactyl and a Regirock that refused to heed his orders. It left him feeling empty.

"A lot." Howard's eye twitched as he regarded Chu-e and his washing machine. His eye was his main tell. Each time it twitched, it gave him away. "Navy punched you?"

Good. He should've punched you harder. The thought ran through his head, but the admin kept his mouth shut.

"If you're alive, you got lucky. Navy's strong. Stronger than you."

"Yeah." A pause. Sprinkles purring got harder, fluffy cheeks pushing closer against Howard's fingers. Soft orange fur would feel like silk between the fingers. [break][break]

"That's not saying much. I'm not particularly strong." [break][break]

Tilting his head, Chu-e rested his good cheek against his palm. His gaze didn't waver as he took the other man in. Flat and apathetic even as a curiosity swirled deep within him.[break][break]
"Do you think you're a better player than I am, gemstone?"

"Player?" The cat's purring grew louder.

Howard considered playing dumb for a few seconds. He played a lot of things: Varoom Kart 64, crossword puzzles, financial management, trivia games, but Howard knew that Chu-e had absolutely zero interest in those things. The only things that interested the shorter man was the death of his child...

...and Howard himself.

"Yes." Howard turned to his colleague, eye flickering with bemusement. "But not because I am better at manipulating people around me. I am just harder to view as a threat. I am helpful, thus nobody doubts me."

Elisabeth Fiorelli had said it herself. It was best to give people what they expected. They expected a meek, helpful admin who ensured the gears continued to grind. He offered that, and thus why question him? What threat was Howard Slayte to the greats?

"People just know what you are now. They know what to expect." Howard was just a man with a singular passion and dream. Because the direction was constant, there was no need to predict his movement.

Nonetheless, his brow furrowed at the pet name.

"Gemstone?"

"The people who mattered always knew what I was." The cryptic answer is said flatly, but there is a flicker of sadness that crosses Chu-e's face for just a moment. As always, it is quickly snapped back to be swept under fake smiles and exaggerated body language. [break][break]

"You shouldn't be so willing to bend over backwards for people. I'd hate to see you end up like Cillian Quinn, THEO BECKETT, myself, countless others..." A flick of the hand as he recounted Kanto. A distant memory he wished he could forget. [break][break]

The Rotom suddenly blinked to life, eyes widening and smirk taking it's sleepy features over. It let out a shrill BEEEEEEEEP to signal the end of the cycle, wet clothes coming to a halt. Chu-e didn't flinch at the sudden noise, only glanced over at the pokemon briefly. [break][break]

Unlike Tempest's unruly TV, this Rotom flung it's door open and awaited howard slayte. Sprinkles butted against his legs, standing to run cat fur against his pants.

"Lesser men who do not dream." Howard waved a hand dismissively. "We're all cogs in this great experiment called Team Rocket; an organization that will collapse at some point. I do not act out because I lack the power, authority, or weight to do so."

The idea of greasing Rocket's gears with blood instead of oil to make the machine crumble and fail was a delicious idea, but that was a plan for the bold and the brave, not the craven and cowardly.

"Alas. Regarding what you said," Howard peered into the washing machine and pulled out his clothes. Wet. Chu-e didn't have a dryer, which partially defeated the point, but what was Howard to do? "I think you're wrong."

The admin chose his words with delicate care. Despite Chu-e's demeanor, Howard suspected that the man viewed him and everyone around him as meat. Not due to Chu-e's own actions, but due to the connection with Necrozma. Even now, he struggled to distinguish between Necrozma's current and former Avatar.

He suspected that if he said that, Chu-e would poison his drink.

"About the others knowing who you were. What you were. What you are now."

Slowly, Chu-e pushed himself to his feet. A delicate tip toe to open a cabinet, a round laundry basket pulled down. Sat at howard slayte's feet, Chu-e takes the wet clothes from the other with a surprising gentleness. [break][break]

"People don't care what children are, gemstone. Only what they can make them into." [break][break]

The Rotom helpfully tilts itself, spilling the contents into the basket. Chu-e pulls it to his chest and stands. His words are almost lost in the hum-drum normalcy of the act.[break][break]

"I have a dry line outside. Come on, before the sun moves." Without waiting for the other, Chu-e turns to make his way elsewhere in his home.
