Reading Through The End

The debris would prove to be of little issue, the Spaceships's Sunsteel Strikes destroying and repelling anything in its path. And with a single use of the ship's Springtide Storm, the Explorer was able to pinpoint a particular of interest, where high levels of emotional energy could be detected.

It was a single strike craft, the smallest among all ships in this graveyard. It was in relatively good condition - its pilot even still resided within the cockpit.

Though no life-signs could be detected.

The ship's terminal was still in good shape - enough that the information within could be downloaded. It would be an easy task, as if it was deliberately set up as such.

What the Explorer would find, was a set of logs from the pilot.

Log 1

The warnings from the Vorcha Empire have proven true; our astrologists have detected something heading towards our star. I had to pull some favors for this info, but they're saying it's a mixture of organic matter and star matter. No other organism possesses such a molecular makeup.

But their analysis says that it's only 300cm tall? I don't know how something so small could be so dense.

And I don't know how, when I look at the night sky, I can see it approaching. The military is scrambling all resources to try and intercept it, before it can devour our star. They've even called me in.

And here I was, ready for retirement. Guess they're pushing that back again.

Log 2

All weapons have proven ineffective. Energy weapons, missiles, even ramming has failed to stop this thing. The only thing that got a reaction out of this monster was our admiral starting up The Cerebral's Perish Drive.

It didn't even have a chance to fully charge before the monster cut a hole through it with a beam of energy. My ship said it was a beam of pure solar energy.

I've lost contact with the rest of the fleet. They're all dead or gone. Either it didn't notice me or it doesn't care. My ship's sensors say the monster is in front of our star now. It hasn't moved since then. I don't know what to do.

And I think I can hear it talking to our star. It sounds angry.

Log 3

Our star is gone.

There's no point looking for survivors now. We focused so much on preparing for the monster that we didn't prepare any backups if we failed. We don't have the means to travel beyond our solar system, and our world is already starting to freeze over.

My ship doesn't have much air remaining. I'll leave my ship's terminal open so whoever finds this can read my messages.

You can't fight this thing. You either need to find a way to convince it to stop, or move solar systems the moment it comes your way. It's clearly going for stars for a reason, but I don't know what it is. Perhaps it'll find what it's looking for, or it'll gorge itself so much that it destroys itself.

Whatever happens, I wish you good fortune.

And at the end of time, let us meet as stars.

The logs ended there - and no further data logs could be found in the graveyard.

If Doug wasn't in the Weak ward, and he wasn't in the Dummy Ward - then that left him in the Ugly Ward. Hideo didn't know if Doug was ugly appearance-wise - he felt like someone would've mentioned it around him if that were the case.

But there was clearly bad blood between Ugly Ward and Dummy Ward; something Hideo'd helped avoid by voting Trust. He didn't resist as Eris pulled him away - not physically anyways.

"We can't blame Doug for what his Ward voted," Hideo said. "Not if he didn't vote for that too. Some people in my ward voted to Forsake, and I bet people from your ward did too."

Always the bad eggs that could ruin things for others, making the whole batch look bad. But at least the good outnumbered the bad here.

Hideo's head turned to Eris when she mentioned what exactly was in the pit, his hand squeezing hers back. "Wait, there were dead bodies in there?" He didn't even feel anything hard in there like bone…

Arceus, that place was fucked.

No wonder it tried to tempt them with what they wanted. "What did it-" He began, before stopping himself; what Doug saw was probably something personal. Best not to push for details on what he saw.

He so desperately wanted it to be true - that the jail had just been a nightmare, that this city was reality, confusing as it could be.

But Eris's response rejected that illusion.

"I…I don't know." He'd be shocked if his Pokemon weren't tearing their fur out trying to find him, but people? "But there's gotta be someone looking for us."

Who it was, he had no way of knowing. But he wouldn't give up hope that there was a way out of there.

And sure enough, a familiar voice called out to them. Another bit of familiarity, and a pillar he could lean on for support. "Doug!" Hideo exclaimed, neither fear nor denial keeping back his joy.

"It's…it's us! It's really us!...what do you mean a brainwashing room? Did you…do you also remember some kind of prison? Where we all got masks and chains?"

One didn't need eyes to tell that this city was nothing like the ruins he'd visited in the Wilds. It was just as lively as Slateport: people walking along the sidewalk, cars driving up and down the street, all the hustle and bustle of citylife reached his ears fine.

And not a single Pokemon could be heard…

"So…we're in a Megalopolan city?" he asked. "Feels…normal. Way too normal." He didn't really know what to expect from a Megalopolis, other than it being future-y.

It was confusing. But it was preferable to the hell he'd been in moments ago. That had to be a cruel nightmare, and this is the reality, right? He couldn't even imagine the alternative at this point. Anything to not be there.

He didn't even want to think about it - but it was hard to, after Eris questioned it.

It took Hideo a moment to answer. "Yeah. I was there." The unpleasant details wormed their way back into his mind. "Had the mask on, and a chain around the neck. They put me in the Weak Ward."

Emphasis on the part that he felt insulted by.

"And…I think I heard you. When I had to clean up mochi off the ground, I think I heard you there. But I didn't hear you in my Ward before that."

He knew he heard her voice. It was one of the few bits of familiarity he found in that place.

He didn't want to let it go.

They were still there, asleep - and covered with spores. They showed no sign of waking, even as the Inquisitor's conversation went on. Just as they'd been when the Inquisitor first found this mushroom creature. "Stopping people from killing children is a good thing, yes? Then I have done a good thing by stopping them!"

And with the Inquisitor's words, the creature's face grew ever closer.

"And what would your 'Justice' entail? The hunters before me considered killing the child
Justice'. Would your justice bring its life to an end, now or later?"

Its tone remained unchanging, its cadence the same as before.

"Do I have to stop you too, to protect it? Would that be justice?"

Children of the City

A familiar voice drew Hideo's attention, the boy latching on to the one bit of familiarity he found in this strange city. His mind didn't tell him who it was, not until he heard it speak his name.

Heard her speak his name.

He could hear the footsteps rapidly approach him - and he braced himself, the expected tackle-hug making him step back a couple paces, but keeping him standing.

"Eris…" he muttered, taking the chance to embrace her back, to hold her close to him. "Yeah, it's me. And you're you, and we're here…"

The question burned in his mind, but he held it back, just to hold her. Just to hold on to that one bit of familiarity.

But he couldn't hold it back forever.

"Where…where are we?"

Lucia Aldrete 's objections did nothing to dissuade Hideo from trying to protect her - though "try" was the key word here; Hideo was no fighter, and his attempts to distract the creature with thrown mochi proved ineffective.

Soon, the assaults would stop, the creature distracted by its next quarry - and in short order, it'd be pulled back, their job considered complete. He had a moment to breathe before approaching Lucia.

"You ok?" was all he could get out before the torrent of water crashed down from above them. He struggled to keep his balance, let alone his breath as the water reached every part of his body, bitter cold seeping into every part of him. Even as the water relented, he was left a shuddering mess.

They were soon herded off, Hideo doing his best to stay close to his ward, even as the chain applied its pressure. Their path seemed to go on forever, even further than it felt like when they were first herded here. The details of their path were lost on him - so instead, his mind wandered, realizing he'd forgotten something.

"I'm Hideo," he said, realizing that he'd never introduced himself to the girl he tried to protect.

He complied with the rest of the instructions he was given: when the fresh, dry clothes were offered, it changed into them, the peach scent reaching his nose, but barely registering. Once they reach their wards, he's unable to utter a word to Lucia as the chain pulls him away, sending him back into his cell.

Reuniting with Genevieve Cromwell carried regret; in his efforts to protect and support Lucia, he'd done nothing for his cellmate. "...thank you for helping me, Cromwell," he said, unsure how to comfort her otherwise.

He'd eat the Mochi he was given; no amount of scooping would dissuade his hungry stomach. And once it was time to go to sleep, he'd go to their cot. He was pretty sure they could share it; he was small enough for that.

They'd gotten through their first day. Hardly enough time to learn their routine, but he still learned. And if he could learn the routine, he could learn its holes, its weaknesses, the moments he could go out on his own.

But that would be tomorrow's work. Tonight he'd rest.

Hideo stumbled about, trying to get his bearings: he was in some kind of city, one like Slateport - but it wasn't Slateport. It didn't sound anything like the city he knew, nor did it feel like Slateport.

Still, it was nothing like the hell he'd been in moments ago, before he laid down on that cold cot. There was no mask on his face restricting his breath, no chain around his neck threatening to choke him for disobedience. He could walk freely, even if he didn't know where to go.

The only hint that this was a dream - the indecipherable text - was imperceptible to him. Was this reality, and the hell he'd been in moments ago been a cruel nightmare?

But if that were true, where were his Pokemon? They would never leave him alone to wander around an unknown city…

Once he got his bearings, that'd be the first thing he'd do: look for his Pokemon. They had to be somewhere around here, even if he heard a distinct lack of Pokemon noises as he looked around, his hand brushing against the sides of buildings so he didn't risk walking into a street.

"Has anyone seen a Beheeyem walking around here? His name's Elga!"

No doubt his Beheeyem would be looking for him - if it was anywhere here.

Hideo had his emotional armor up, ready for the same scoldings paxton concordas gave him. He was expecting a similar degree to what Alexei Ivanov got during the Gym Leader meeting, and he was ready to say the same words that'd gotten Paxton off his case - that he'd be more open, that he'd trust the League more.

But that armor didn't prepare him for empathy, her words catching him off guard and leaving him speechless for a moment.

The unused armor now just felt like a pointless weight.

"Oh." It'd take another moment before he said anything else. "Uh, thank you. For understanding."

He could hear her throw glass around, the starting of a blaze clear to hear. He could also hear Uxie joining in, several other beakers tossed around as a grin sat on the pixie's face - though it also gently guided Hideo away from the ensuing destruction.

"If…if I did get involved with AQUA, even just as a free agent, what would I be doing? I already help the region as a Gym Leader, so…"

He'd already had this kind of discussion with Melody Miro , with the prospect of using Uxie's memory manipulation on the table. One he wasn't too sure if he was comfortable with.

Then again, he didn't entirely know what AQUA did, other than fight big threats. Which he technically already helped do.

Destroy it and the workshop. +50 points

His comforts offered, Hideo could only await the results. He could hear quite a few voices vote to Forsake - but they were outnumbered by Trusts. He'd try to remember the voices who voted for Forsake - they were the ones to be careful of, the ones he couldn't trust.

Fortunately, they weren't the only side('s majority) to make the right choice. "See?" Hideo said to Lucia Aldrete , "It'll be alright. We just gotta stick together, ok?"

And when they're herded off to a platform, Hideo made sure to stick close to her. He had to push down his own fears, his own anxiety, to be strong for her, so they could both get through this. It wasn't simply because he was a Gym Leader, who should lead by example; he felt a personal responsibility to keep someone younger than him safe.

He'd been on the other end too many times to not return the favor, even if indirectly.

He was sure John Sullivan would get on his ass if he didn't.

And on the topic of things on his ass - his ass just got tossed by Okidogi. Hideo was really not a fan of this dog.

His landing was a mix of soft and rough. He could tell he definitely landed on some mochi, but there was some other stuff it felt like he landed on. He couldn't tell what it was - a mixture of hard stuff and goopy stuff.

His blindness could be a blessing sometimes; he had no idea about the bits of body strewn across the floor. And his focus was more on reuniting with Lucia, to help her get through this ordeal.

Just focus on their job. Keep the wardens' eyes off them.

And find his way through this ordeal.

Even as the Ugly Ward spited the Dummy Ward, chaining them down, he kept to his work, trying to stay close to Lucia. Even as a familiar voice (Cillian Quinn 's) sent a chill down his spine, he kept to his work, helping Lucia if she needed it. Even as something was sent loose, attacking everyone in here, he kept to his work. Even as his cellmate, Genevieve Cromwell , sounded like she was at wit's end, he kept working.

Even if hearing Eris Halla 's voice tempted him to break away, to go find and help her, he stayed where he was; he didn't know how many people would be in the way, or what he might trip over, or if the creature going loose on everyone would turn its attention to him.

He just stayed cleaning, helping the one person he knew he could help. The best he could do was keep cleaning, and if that creature attacking him came towards them…he could try and distract it, to keep it away from Lucia.

It was all he could do.

The song was no funeral dirge, no elegy of loss, no chorus of angels; it was energetic, upbeat. It was unexpected…and yet, can anyone truly say that wouldn't be what's waiting for them when their final moments have come? That it won't be what awaits them at the end?

Once their ship arrived, they would find the source of the distress signal - or what remained of it.

An entire space fleet, with ships far grander in size than the Explorer's - all drifting lifelessly through cold space, shredded apart from a grand battle. Not far off was a planet, one covered by what was once a grand civilization - but as the Explorer's scans would reveal, not a single living soul was on this planet, nor among the ship graveyard.

There was no-one to communicate with here…but perhaps some information could be gleaned through the wreckage, data logs that could further elucidate what happened here.

Though the Explorer would have to be careful: a ship graveyard could be just as perilous as a living fleet.

"It's fine if Charles is in the room with us. Just, he won't be joining you in the dream itself."

To the rest, Hideo nodded along. "That's a pretty noble goal to have! I imagine you got a lot on your plate, being a princess and an ambassador. The story you chose is a good test of how you behave with power."

They'd soon reach the room, a Pokemon opening the door psychically for them. The room itself was well-furnished, with a nice chair for Hideo to sit upon and a comfy couch for the challenger. A pair of Musharna sat upon both seats, and a number of Psychic and Fairy Pokemon were scattered about, watching Hideo and Elise as they entered.

There was more than enough space for the shard Calyrex to sit, if he so desired. He was also free to wait outside if so desired.

(And wherever the Clayrex waited, the "Ralts" would wait as well).

Hideo went to his own seat, the one with a book resting upon it; there was little in terms of illustrations on the book, the words A Monster In The Woods its most striking feature - apart from the braille lettering one could run their fingers along. He swept it up, taking a seat with the same motion.

The Musharna above him descended onto the armrest of his chair.

"You can take a seat on the couch," Hideo said, the Musharna upon it willing to move as needed. "You'll want to make yourself comfortable, 'cause this'll take some time."

Once Elise was seated, Hideo would begin. "All you'll need to do is close your eyes, and give it a moment. Just focus on my words, and let them do their work."

His Pokemon went to work, the Musharnas letting out some Dream Mist as they would Hypnotize Elise into a peaceful slumber.

"You'll find yourself in the middle of a dark, foreboding forest…"

The transition was instantaneous, Elise now standing within a dark forest. The trees covered the sky, and yet an eerie light illuminated the woods, with no clear indication where the light came from.

Hideo's voice could be heard around her, spoken from above, yet clear, as if it were coming from her own head.

A long time ago, when men still fought with blades and bows, there was a forest that few ever dared venture into - and none returned to tell of what they found within.

And so, people made their own answer: there must be something in these woods. Something that tears apart any who enters the woods, something that none have laid eyes upon. Something that, one day, may leave, and spread its hunting grounds.

There's A Monster In The Woods

And yet…one person had chosen to enter these woods, of their own free will. They had entered despite knowing the risks…or perhaps, because of them.

For they were far more capable than the average person.

Elise Calcifet may choose one Pokemon they possess. Elise Calcifet will be able to function as if they were this Pokemon, and is instinctually aware of how to use all its attacks/abilities. They still are human in form, but they may choose to possess minor physical traits (fur, coloration, claws, etc.) appropriate to the chosen Pokemon.

But just who were they - and why had they chosen to enter the woods of their own volition?

The Next Destination?

The cosmos was a grand thing indeed - but perhaps the Explorer's host could shed light on prospective planets.

"Oh, I could think of one you might like!"

Fortunately for the Explorer, he could help them there.

"I remember this one world I visited that looked really nice! It had water and all that other stuff people need to live! And it's big enough for a lotta people to live on! There was a guy there, but he said he was waiting until his time came, so I don't think he's gonna stop you from visiting there or anything."

The Little Prince spoke with enthusiasm, with no heed to the implication of those words.

"It should be a great place for kids to grow up on! I'm sure everyone there can find a rose just like mine. Or like yours."

What that "rose" could be would vary from person to person - but whatever it was, would be important to them.

The Explorer would soon receive a notification from their Spaceship; enough time had passed for it to fully charge; they were free to leave if they wanted.

Even if it'd only felt like they were here for less than an hour.

"Anything else you wanna know? I'm glad to help any other way I can!"

The Frozen Throne

Just as Hideo expected, the Psychic attacked fail to do anything against the Galarian Zigzagoon. It was a mistake the Indeedee only realized after the attack finished - and by then, it was too late for it to correct its mistake.

The Gunk Shot flew towards the Indeedee in a fabulous arc. Snowflakes parted out of its way, providing no (illusory) resistance as it landed straight on the Indeedee's face, exploding in a mess of gunk. The Indeedee went down like a toppled snowman, and just as the two Pokemon before it, its body was covered in ice.

The shattering that followed signaled the end of their battle. "The snow claims its final victim," Hideo said, a smile on his face. "And the throne awaits its Ruler…at least, it would if it were real." The Illusion around them dissipated, bringing them back to reality.

"Your team did well too! Victory is yours today - though before I give you your badge: was there anything you would have wanted to do differently in this battle, now that you've reached its conclusion?"
