Hideo stumbled about, trying to get his bearings: he was in some kind of city, one like Slateport - but it wasn't Slateport. It didn't sound anything like the city he knew, nor did it feel like Slateport.

Still, it was nothing like the hell he'd been in moments ago, before he laid down on that cold cot. There was no mask on his face restricting his breath, no chain around his neck threatening to choke him for disobedience. He could walk freely, even if he didn't know where to go.

The only hint that this was a dream - the indecipherable text - was imperceptible to him. Was this reality, and the hell he'd been in moments ago been a cruel nightmare?

But if that were true, where were his Pokemon? They would never leave him alone to wander around an unknown city…

Once he got his bearings, that'd be the first thing he'd do: look for his Pokemon. They had to be somewhere around here, even if he heard a distinct lack of Pokemon noises as he looked around, his hand brushing against the sides of buildings so he didn't risk walking into a street.

"Has anyone seen a Beheeyem walking around here? His name's Elga!"

No doubt his Beheeyem would be looking for him - if it was anywhere here.

Where is she?

This isn't a dream. This can't possibly be. Her dreams would never be this bright without Reiner by her side. Where have they taken her? Is this meant to be a new form of punishment?[break][break]

A step back, her breath hitches. She feels so unbearably small, so lost and uncertain in this strange city.[break][break]

What is she supposed to do here? Find where they've taken Isaac Merlo? Go around finding hidden tera crystals? What happens if she fails? Will they wind up smashing Reiner's pokeball like they did the other pokemon?[break][break]

No. No, nononono-[break][break]

Elga. A familiar voice, a familiar name and description. It is the only thing that anchors her in this moment, drags her just enough out of her spiralling thoughts to spy that ever familiar face.[break][break]

"Hideo?" Small steps, that slowly but surely grow into greater strides. "Hideo!" And she can't help but toss herself right at him, tackling him with the tightest hug.[break][break]

Her world grows stable. Her breathing slows. She can't stop shaking but she refuses to let go.[break][break]

A familiar voice drew Hideo's attention, the boy latching on to the one bit of familiarity he found in this strange city. His mind didn't tell him who it was, not until he heard it speak his name.

Heard her speak his name.

He could hear the footsteps rapidly approach him - and he braced himself, the expected tackle-hug making him step back a couple paces, but keeping him standing.

"Eris…" he muttered, taking the chance to embrace her back, to hold her close to him. "Yeah, it's me. And you're you, and we're here…"

The question burned in his mind, but he held it back, just to hold her. Just to hold on to that one bit of familiarity.

But he couldn't hold it back forever.

"Where…where are we?"

She's the only one that can start piecing it together. For his sake and hers. Now that colours don't peel and meld together, she can see the shapes for what they are - Different structures short and tall, properly defined streets and doors. Windows that peer into strangely empty buildings -[break][break]

"It... looks like Lesser Megalopolis? But with way more lights." Where he desires information, she provides. And in turn, she finds whatever strength she can muster whilst having him close. This isn't a dream. This can't possibly be. He speaks too lucidly for him to simply be a part of her imagination.[break][break]

"Hideo." Her breath catches in her throat. Will she sound insane for asking him? But she has to know what exactly is real and what she's simply hallucinating. She has to know if there can be help from beyond the walls that she's been confined in.[break][break]

"Did you... are you also in a prison? With a mask you can't take off?"

One didn't need eyes to tell that this city was nothing like the ruins he'd visited in the Wilds. It was just as lively as Slateport: people walking along the sidewalk, cars driving up and down the street, all the hustle and bustle of citylife reached his ears fine.

And not a single Pokemon could be heard…

"So…we're in a Megalopolan city?" he asked. "Feels…normal. Way too normal." He didn't really know what to expect from a Megalopolis, other than it being future-y.

It was confusing. But it was preferable to the hell he'd been in moments ago. That had to be a cruel nightmare, and this is the reality, right? He couldn't even imagine the alternative at this point. Anything to not be there.

He didn't even want to think about it - but it was hard to, after Eris questioned it.

It took Hideo a moment to answer. "Yeah. I was there." The unpleasant details wormed their way back into his mind. "Had the mask on, and a chain around the neck. They put me in the Weak Ward."

Emphasis on the part that he felt insulted by.

"And…I think I heard you. When I had to clean up mochi off the ground, I think I heard you there. But I didn't hear you in my Ward before that."

He knew he heard her voice. It was one of the few bits of familiarity he found in that place.

He didn't want to let it go.

"Watch your f*cking language." Came blaring out of an alleyway.

What? They were 14 now. They were old enough for that joke.

"Hey!" Doug said as he approached the shorty squad, materializing out of the hazy, low mists that prowled the streets. "Good to see ya, runts! Are you real, or am I still in the brainwashing room?"

He was kidding... but also, given how he had woken up to Yuina Higashi, there was certainly enough wish fulfillment going on that he couldn't dismiss the possibility entirely.

He so desperately wanted it to be true - that the jail had just been a nightmare, that this city was reality, confusing as it could be.

But Eris's response rejected that illusion.

"I…I don't know." He'd be shocked if his Pokemon weren't tearing their fur out trying to find him, but people? "But there's gotta be someone looking for us."

Who it was, he had no way of knowing. But he wouldn't give up hope that there was a way out of there.

And sure enough, a familiar voice called out to them. Another bit of familiarity, and a pillar he could lean on for support. "Doug!" Hideo exclaimed, neither fear nor denial keeping back his joy.

"It's…it's us! It's really us!...what do you mean a brainwashing room? Did you…do you also remember some kind of prison? Where we all got masks and chains?"

"Hiya, Hideo! Eris!" He greeted cheerfully, raising a hand.

Unfortunately, Eris was not quite as elated to see him as Hideo was to hear him.

Ah, he was feeling the love already. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes, wondering if the reaction would've been the same if it was Navy or Isaac.

"Why is that your first guess? I'm at least an 8!" He huffed, irreverent. "But... yeah. And also, no. I voted for not screwing over the other wards. I was also in the minority there, though. So... Yeah."

Singed the bridges with his fellow inmates and achieved nothing in the process. Not quite good.

"Oh— Michael Navidson's there with me as well, by the way. I'm sure you can guess what his vote was."

He decided not to share the other man's state of health. There was not much any of them could do to help him while still in prison— specially Eris, who was in a separate ward entirely.

He paused. Right, Hideo asked a question too, yeah?

"Right— So like, did the guards tell ya guys about the 'Room of desires'?" He said. "Well, we went there."

He tapped his feet, crossing his arms thoughtfully as he glanced up at the sky, lips pursing.

"They make you look into a mask, and it... supposedly shows ya what you most desire?" He scratched at his cheek. "Not super sure of how legit it is. But I couldn't stop thinking 'bout what it showed me after, I'll give it that."

He had gone to sleep trying to convince himself that the mask was selling him bullshit, and at the same time, that he actually needed it. It was an odd sensation feeling, to know something was bad for him and desire it anyw—

... Okay, maybe it wasn't quite odd.

How is she meant to feel when people like howard slayte, Thea Naito, Isaac Merlo is put through such things? While they were off getting high on their deepest desires?[break][break]

Her hand squeezes Hideo's, all those emotions subconsciously spilling into how tight she grips it. Deep breath in and out. It isn't his fault.[break][break]

"We were in the pit. Where they throw leftovers and bodies." She imagines that Hideo must've felt it, but couldn't fully comprehend it without anyone telling him. "There was a pokemon running around and hurting all of us."[break][break]

A deep, shakier breath.[break][break]

"Because of your ward's choice, people from my ward were chained down to a small spot. We couldn't run from it even if we wanted to."[break][break]

It isn't his fault.[break][break]

"Anything to do with the toxic chain is bad. It preys on your desires and drives you crazy enough to attack even the people you love."[break][break]

If Doug wasn't in the Weak ward, and he wasn't in the Dummy Ward - then that left him in the Ugly Ward. Hideo didn't know if Doug was ugly appearance-wise - he felt like someone would've mentioned it around him if that were the case.

But there was clearly bad blood between Ugly Ward and Dummy Ward; something Hideo'd helped avoid by voting Trust. He didn't resist as Eris pulled him away - not physically anyways.

"We can't blame Doug for what his Ward voted," Hideo said. "Not if he didn't vote for that too. Some people in my ward voted to Forsake, and I bet people from your ward did too."

Always the bad eggs that could ruin things for others, making the whole batch look bad. But at least the good outnumbered the bad here.

Hideo's head turned to Eris when she mentioned what exactly was in the pit, his hand squeezing hers back. "Wait, there were dead bodies in there?" He didn't even feel anything hard in there like bone…

Arceus, that place was fucked.

No wonder it tried to tempt them with what they wanted. "What did it-" He began, before stopping himself; what Doug saw was probably something personal. Best not to push for details on what he saw.

Change the subject. Inject a little bit of humor.

"...would that mask even work on me?"

The dead people. The pain of crystals slitting her skin. The excruciating injuries that Isaac sustained. The steady decline as one by one, her pillars of strength seem to crumble and fall.[break][break]

And there is nowhere to put all this. Reiner isn't here to support her, to pull her into a hug and comfort her. For all she knows, Reiner is next on the chopping block. When she wakes up, he could be gone -[break][break]

Whilst she might hold her tongue with respect for what Hideo said, for the knowledge that Doug would not have done such a thing, she cannot hold back the tears that have welled up. She cannot blink them away. Each time she tries, it only gets worse. The tears singe at her cheeks and make her wish that she hadn't been given this space.[break][break]

Any space at all, to think, to feel.

Lost little lambs

Eris Halla & Hideo Kino

A pit, where bodies and leftovers were thrown. With a pokemon running around kicking people. Chains.

"No need to tell me twice." He sighed at Eris' all too true words, scratching at the back of his head. "Ugh... Or maybe ya do. It just sticks with ya. Even though I know it's definitely bullshit, it keeps coming back. Like... a drug urge."

He had definitely nailed it with his 'Opium Room' bit.

More importantly, though... Doug frowned, crouching before the two as if to scan them— useless though he knew the act to be in the dream.

"How are you guys back there?" He asked. "Any serious injuries?"

He couldn't do anything on the dream. There wasn't a whole lot that could be done in general while in this prison— but there were things that could be done with what they had to deal with fractured and broken bones.

"Oh, I'm sure you can guess. A ring, a wife, some kids and a whole lotta smiles and white hairs." He said at Hideo's question, shrugging his shoulders with an eye roll. "I wasn't really surprised, but I did feel a bit disappointed. I didn't think my dEePeSt DeSiReS would be so mundane."

Maybe he should be happy there wasn't anything twisted lurking beneath the surface of his conscious.

"I would say ya don't wanna find out, but given what the alternative is..." Brainwashing or cleaning carcasses while getting a beating—

"Eris?" He intones suddenly, eyes widening as the tears begin to flow. Aw shit, was that his fault, his ward's, or just everything going on? "Eris."

He throws a glance Hideo's way, remembering there's no pokemon there to parse the meaningfulness of said look to the blind child.

So he just reaches out and grabs him by the shoulder.

"Emergency hug." He warns them both, before trying to scoop up both kids into a hug.
