Night had fallen suddenly and unexpectedly upon Petalburg Woods, long shadows being cast by dark trees under the pale light of a full moon.

It’s all wrong, it’s not logical, and that feeling of wrongness only grows and grows with the more they walk. A short trip to collect samples has become something much different, and in this place Ceri is usually so familiar with, she now feels concerned and disoriented.

Perhaps even threatened.

”Uhmm… Shouldn’t the exit to the woods be this way?”

That’s what the compass in her phone says, at least, but what lies before her is tall grass and dense bushes. No path ahead.

Being a lab assistant isn’t the most exciting job in the world. Sure, the science part is great, but the part where she has to stay behind to clean the lab while everyone else goes to do cool things somewhere else? That part sucks, but thankfully, priam conrad comes in as if her saving grace.

”Oh! I bet Ryan would love that!” She smiles, clapping her hands together because she’s just so very kawaii, but sadly for whoever Ryan is, it seems as if he might be destined to miss his birthday feast.

Despite all her pretence at innocence, Ceri isn’t oblivious to the way he looks at her, nor to the implications of his statement. If there’s any signs of it, it’s perhaps only the slight smirk that tugs at her cherry pink lips – one that fades into a smile by the time she once again looks at him.

”Yeah? Sorry if you get bored while we’re out here, then. Maybe later I can make it up to you somehow.”

Are there any implications to her own words?

She leaves that up to him to figure out, since her own attention all too quickly returns to the fields and to looking at their surroundings in search for any signs of strange activity. All she notices is an Unfezant with about half a dozen Pidove following it, all of them probably belonging to the farm they’re “visiting”.

There are no hopeful symbolisms attached to the tree of life in Ceri’s eyes, but her interest in it still cannot be denied.

Life does not sprout from nothing, after all. Spontaneous Generation had been disproven long ago, and so there must be something that caused it to grow. Something living, even if miniscule. Something that was probably linked to all the strange events that took place when Team Rocket took over Sootopolis.

But, what exactly?

Even in Autumn, even when small piles of leaves begin to form beneath all surrounding greenery, life refuses to fade from this tree. Ceri always finds it to be a nice sight when she has time to stop by, and this time it still is, even if she seems to have some unexpected company for this particular visit...

Not only are lab assistants underpaid, but they always get stuck with the shittiest jobs, don’t they?

For example, going all the way to a farm to look into rumours of strange phenomena happening out on the fields, because of course Team Rocket can’t be bothered with sending anyone more important until they confirm it really is something worth their while...

”Ah, I don’t think I could ever live in a farm.”

Ceri chuckles, as if this weren’t obvious enough by the fact that she chose to come here in an all too short dress, putting herself at risk of getting an undesirable tan under the heat of this sun that’s still no joke despite it being Autumn. Is there anything worse than a farmer’s tan?

With this question, she looks up at the man next to her, forced to do as much by the considerable height difference between them.

The words come with a teasing smirk, because really they’re not meant in an offensive way. There are many words Ceri could use to describe him, and cute is definitely one of them; along with handsome, and smart, and sweet, and honestly... probably too good to be spending his time with someone like her.

This thought seems to only emphasize itself when their meal arrives, because being someone who mostly survives on fast food and whatever is served at Team Rocket’s dining hall, there’s definitely nothing ordinary about their meal from Ceri’s perspective.

It’s not surprising, not really, especially not when considering the general mood and personality of people in STEM fields (and also in Team Rocket), but while Ceri may be well aware that this is the opinion some people have of her, does she do anything to change it? Does she try to act differently? Is she considerate enough to try to be less annoying, maybe?

So, even if this girl is a complete stranger to her, Ceri smiles brightly all the same – her energy and joyfulness never being contained.

But, Ceri wasn’t everything she seemed to be, was she? She may have appeared joyful, carefree, and even innocent, but the reality was much different from this…

Clad in sneakers and short dress, Ceri walked by the side of the Unovan. Quick and light, there was a certain bounce to her every step, the ease and cheer of it seeming to match the joyful way in which she carried the conversation without a problem...

On and on she went about her research, about her life, and about things that may have mattered all too little to Izzy, but how could anyone not listen to her when she smiled so brightly?
