CJ thrived in the wilderness. Not for, like, ever, of course; they loved hot water and technology too much. But a few hours, even days, at a time? Avoiding people, stress, work, and just being able to-- to exist? Heaven. Absolutely heaven.

But, holy shit, they were sweating. No amount of time spent here would ever acclimate them to Hoenn’s hellish climate. They’d started out with layer and had gradually stripped out of them, leaving them in bikeshorts and a white tanktop.

Wiping a strand of damp blonde hair behind their ear, they paused, hearing voices up ahead. A few steps brought them to where Antoinette Spina was setting up the water dish for her Shinx.

“Aww, how cute,” CJ said, beaming at the little creature. Kinnick made a noise low in her throat from her position beside CJ, like when two felines spot each other on opposite sides of a window-- the buildup to a terrifying yowl. They nudged the Jolteon with their foot. “No, leave it alone,” before shooting an apologetic look to the stranger. “Sorry, she’s… intense.”

Since the Darkest Day, CJ’d been quite busy. There was an immediate need for medics and aid, and though the life-threatening and emergent worries had fallen off (a bit), there were always follow-up visits, and new hurts to soothe.

They’d set up a little mobile clinic on the outskirts of Lilycove, which they figured was close enough to the epicenter of the action in Sootopolis, while being far enough out of dodge to not tee off any Rockets who want to make lives harder for people (which is what CJ’s general assumption of Team Rocket was: people who thrived on making life harder for other people).

Anyway, organizational loyalties notwithstanding, it was another busy day at the clinic. They were just a tech and not a DVM, so they couldn’t do much in the way of medication, but they could still set breaks and flush wounds, drain abscesses and soothe burns. This late in the game, a lot of people and Pokemon were presenting with old injuries-- stuff that was festering, foul, and stubborn to heal.

CJ’d just finished debriding an oral wound on a Sandile and was setting their instruments in order as their patient woke up (reptilians never did anything fast). They’d set aside some time to go out amongst the masses and pester some of their patients to see how they’d been doing.

CJ hesitates when the stranger takes the lead, guiding them to-- “A… boozy ice cream stand?” CJ parrots, unable to decide if they think it’s genius or revolting. “Huh. What will human beings think of next.”

CJ trails after them, having to not jump at the possible promise of an invite for a drink (date? No, brain, down.) at a later time. They also try to avoid making a face when the words red wine float make an appearance and are terrified to think of what that actually tastes like. Yuck.

“Okay, um… a red wine float and a Kahlua sundae, please,” CJ says, handing ID and card to the attendant, waiting for a second to take back the plastic and the receipt.

“That doesn’t surprise me,” CJ said, when ~~their~~ the hot stranger admitted to modeling. They stepped off to the side to wait for their order.

“Did I ever introduce myself? I’m CJ. What’s your name, so I can stop calling you the hot stranger in my head.”

CJ was not surprised to see another of Josh’s Pokemon fully kitted out for riding. Actually, they’d never seen any Pokemon in actual gear-- they’d always imagined people just, you know, hopped on and went.

“I’ll put it on my travel list,” CJ said, though they weren’t really a fan of big cities. From across the way, Kinnick yowled, her next vicious thunder attack stunning a Kabutops that had risen out of the water like Godzilla.

CJ frowned, pushing themselves up to standing and wiping dirt off on their pants. “Ugh, I should probably take her home before she wreaks more havoc the local ecology. It was nice meeting you, Josh!”

“Cool,” CJ says, still backpedaling, still painfully aware of how much of a loser they’re being in front of this very attractive stranger. “I’ll buy you ice cream, then. And maybe a drink? That I won’t spill on you, this time.”

The more they talk, the less worked up they are, like the words are snippets of steam escaping and the pressure begins to decrease. There was a reason Jeannie always said they talked too much.

“Oh, you know,” they say, waving a hand as they take another step back towards the festival-- because this guy did know, he was just trying to get CJ to say it. There was no way in heaven or hell that he didn’t know what he looked like, “like, fit. Like a calendar model. In great shape. Ketosis looks at you and cries in shame.”

CJ laughed. “It’s fine. I’ve never met a politician that I liked, so.” They turn to look back out at the lake. “The feeling is probably mutual, though.”

“Yeah, energetic,” CJ says, as Kinnick decimates a lingering Poliwrath with a direct thunder. They toss a Pokeball onto the slightly-smoldering body. “That’s one way to put it.”

Nodding, CJ made a wry face. “You have no idea. I hate the heat.” They gestured at the general area around them. “I miss the snow, and I miss seasons. Hoenn’s only season is allergy season.” They snorted at their own joke.

They shake their head. Josh wasn’t here to listen to them rant. “What’s Goldenrod like?”
