CJ is ready to head back to society, into the merchandise stalls and groups of people where it’s-- safe isn’t the right word, because they don’t feel endangered, really-- but less private might be a good place to start.

Unfortunately for them, they turn around right as Caden leans in, and he calls them sweetheart, and oh, god, it’s too hot to think right now.

“Um,” CJ says, voice barely a breath, face so close if they stepped just a few inches closer they’d be forehead to forehead, lips to-- “d-do you like… ice cream?”

Then their brain just hard resets, overheats, recycles, returns to basic CJ programming because their eyes rake down Caden’s exposed chest and midriff and they say “Probably not, with a body like that.”

God damn it.

It really-- it really doesn’t, though. Nothing like this has ever happened to them before. Never have they ever been forced to solve the problem of sixty-four sharks in, essentially, a swimming pool.

“Everything’s all fucky-wucky with the end of the world,” they add, as though that explains things.

CJ peers after the stranger, their feet moving almost of their own accord. They stay safely back of the sea, squinting into the water to see if they notice anything. They don’t really know what they’re expecting. A corpse? A bucket of blood?

“Maybe from… each other?” CJ offers, because it’s the least macabre thing they can think of and they desperately hope it’s true. “Scuffling and fighting with each other in close quarters?”

“Yeah, I can imagine.” Having worked in vetmed for so long CJ had seen the results of what improper breeding could create. It was why, for the most part, they tried to avoid buying from breeders and supporting that portion of the industry, as much as they could.

They gave Josh a wan smile. “Beaurocrats don’t fast track anything unless it directly benefits them.” Maybe, as a Ranger, CJ should avoid badmouthing the Powers That Be, since they supplied their paycheck-- but Josh seemed like good people, and probably wouldn’t go off talking about CJ spouting their mouth off. Probably.

They did, however, bark a laugh when Josh had the audacity to insinuate all Pokemon are smart. “Um, well,” they said, squeezing their braid, “I don’t doubt that Kin’s old owner was entirely unprepared for her. But she is also kind of a savage sometimes.”

As though to prove the point, Kinnick had worked their nose under a nearby lump that turned out to be a Kabuto. With a victorious screech, she flipped the thing over and fox-pounced on it twice with a double-kick of her front legs. The thing’s little yellow legs flailed and twitched in time with the strikes, before hanging slack.

“Snowpoint, Sinnoh,” CJ said, voice colored with pride as they zapped the poor Kabuto with a Pokeball. “I know nothing about racing or else I’d be more help. But we really only have one season here, and that’s pretty much summer.”
