Guilt swarmed him at the thought of letting the scientist run off on his own but he forced himself to give Beau a reassuring smile. "Mate, we almost got squished," he gently reminded his friend, "besides, the way these passages twist and turn, I don't think we'd be able to track him down by now."[break][break]

Jack's thoughts immediately went to Naomi Sato and the times he had run into her doing research on her own in dangerous places. The guilt at abandoning Creighton surfaced again.[break][break]

"Fucking scientists," he murmured, then louder, "We'll put in a report with the League and see if we can get assigned to a Search and Rescue team to come back with more supplies and a plan to rescue him." Jack was careful to use the word rescue and not 'recover'.[break][break]

When Beau pointed out the dynite ore within the fallen pokemon, Jack physically recoiled. Nodding in agreement, he avoided thinking about how hard-hearted you'd have to be to mine something like that.[break][break]

Slipping his compass from his pocket, Jack pressed a finger to a keystone inlaid within the casing and mega energy swirled around his Aggron. "Alright, grab what you can carry and then clear a path back to the exit for us," he instructed the pokemon.[break][break]

Just one more cupboard and he was sure he would have found popcorn. But instead, Aurelie had rushed in to defend her demesne. He soldiered bravely on until she called him by his full name. Or she might have? Was his middle name Bartholomew? It may have been Hamish. He looked at her a hiccoughed instead of answering.[break][break]

His eyes swiveled to Isaac as the man pinned the blame on him. Jack's cheeks heated with the embarrassment of having failed the team. The food had been good. The leftovers would have been perfect. First Zev Harcourt had abandoned him, now the leftovers had too. Would he ever be truly happy?[break][break]

Jack shivered as a cool draft blew through Aurelie's apartment, chilly even under the extra layer of Isaac's shirt. When Isaac opened the door to reveal a majestic pokemon, Jack was stunned. Or at least he was stunned until the wayward leftovers container floated into view.[break][break]

"Thank you, magical friend!" Jack shouted gratefully, heedless of his volume levels as he rushed past Aurelie to the waiting container. Fumbling it open, he scooped out a handful of chicken wings. Popping one into his mouth, he tossed one to Aurelie - or at least to the general direction of Aurelie - and offered another to the pokemon that had saved the evening.[break][break]

"See, I didn't lose the food," he said cheerfully around a mouthful of chicken.

Like a sleeper agent hearing their activation phrase, Pamplemousse downed his mochi and sprung up behind Diamandis. The time for watching and waiting had passed, now was the time to strike at every weakness, every crack, every break in the armor.[break][break]

As Diamandis twirled out of the cell with ethereal grace, Pamplemousse's own toxic chain grew an eye in its distal loop. Impassively, Pamplemousse looked at it, seeing himself reflected in the soft brown hue of an eye very much like jack wainwright's. Pamplemousse shrugged and eased out of the cell, the eye hovering over his shoulder, swiveling to and fro like a dutiful sentry.[break][break]

As Diamandis acrobatically flipped away from a prison guard that swung at her, Pamplemousse grabbed the Megalopolan and pulled him to the floor, slamming their captor's ahead into the unforgiving stone with an uncaring expression. Through Jack's eye, he saw another guard closing in behind him. Waiting until the moment before the Megalopolan struck and aiding by the vision provided by his toxic chain, Pamplemousse dodged before shoving his attacker off balance.[break][break]

Where Jack may have sought out Aurelie Lefevre or rushed around helping and protecting others, Pamplemousse headed for the central platform with a single-minded focus of doing as much damage as possible along the way.[break][break]

"Hey! It's not safe down here!" Jack called after the professor, moving to intercept him as Beau closed in behind the man. When the massive Excadrill broke through the earth below and dyanmaxed, Jack was separate from Beau by the enormous pokemon.[break][break]

"Hang on, mate, I'm with you," he shouted, hoping his messaged of encouragement wasn't lost in the Excadrill's roar. Relief flooded him when he heard Beau's wry shout and his Rillaboom's drumming. Taking inspiration from Beau's immediate attack, Jack released his Aggron with the command of "Hit it with everything you've got!"[break][break]

The dynamaxed pokemon turnde back and forth, rapidly swiping at the two pokemon that flanked it.[break][break]

Aggron dodged when it could or else took the brunt of the slashing claws, but in return attacked with reckless abandon. Aggron's rock head sheltered it from the repercussions of the furious onslaught. Between the ferociousness of Jack's onslaught and the booming attacks from Beau's side of the battlefield, the battered shield was quick to fall.[break][break]

"Finish it off," Jack shouted, pointing at the staggered Excadrill. A bright light filled the chamber as the Light of Ruin flashed down from the rock overhead to disintegrate the Excadrill.[break][break]

Looking over to Beau, Jack grumbled "That professor needs to figure his own shit out. Let's get mining and get out of here before something else dynamaxes."[break][break]

"You'd make an excellent bodyguard, love," Jack said, in awe as Aurelie valiantly defending him from the jostling elbows of the crowd. He was flattered until he realized she was mostly defending the food. A wry grin crooked his mouth up at the corners.[break][break]

His amusement grew as he plans were thwarted at every turn. When another couple took a spot by the ferns, he was half-tempted to just go join them but Aurelie seemed dedicated to finding the perfect spot. He swallowed a laugh as she complained about the Snorlax; the station occasionally received complaints about the enormous pokemon which the Rangers either dutifully ignored or sent whatever trainee was on hand to cajole her out of the way. The snorlax was wild but the local Rangers had named her something silly. Eunice, maybe, or Gertrude, or Bertha? He kept his mouth shut, though laughter danced in his eyes.[break][break]

"Lovely spot," he said, sending a furious glare at the passerby who had trod on his girlfriend. "I will valiantly exact vengeance upon anyone who threatens this sacred ground and our hard-won meals," he grinned at here.

Leaning back, Jack cocked an eyebrow at Aurelie, wondering if she had just given him the invitation that she intended. "I'd love to taste your curry," he said, keeping his voice neutral as he scooped up a bit of her food. Holding up his take-away container of food and winking, he added, "Maybe you'd like my noodle?"

Ultra Crater: AJ #3

Grinning, Jack followed Aurelie from crater to crater, smiling at the inventive gifts she brought with her as the moon grew fuller and brighter in the sky above. While he remained on edge from the previous dangers they had encountered, he allowed himself the joy of her presence as they explored.[break][break]

Hi brows knitted together in concern at the sight of the Kartana moving in a group. He remembered their previous fight with the dangerous beasts before, his eyes flickering to Aurelie. Like so many things with here, he was enamored with her interest in the Drawn Sword Pokemon but he couldn't help remember how she had attracted their attention with the misplayed recording the last time they were together.[break][break]

"Yes, love, let's investigate," he murmured to her, reaching out to squeeze her hand affectionately. Maybe they would learn more about their strange speech patterns and he would be happy if that made Aurelie happy.[break][break]

At the changing of the guard, he nodded silently at her suggestion to move inside. Rising from where they had hidden, he let out a grunt of frustration as a lone swordsman appear. Releasing Harpe from his pokeball, he stepped forward to shield Aurelie.[break][break]

The Kartana and Aegislash traded blows, lighting quick slashes glanced off of shield or were expertly parried. Jack glanced around nervously, but the razor sharp edges of the Kartana did not ring out like the normal clash of steel on steel. "We need to end this, Harpe," he called to the Aegislash, his voice pitched low so as not to carry, "Grudge Calibur, now."[break][break]

Harpe flashed back away from the Kartana, a strange tendril of shadow siphoning life away from their foe. The Aegislash's edges seemed to gleam in the light, glowing with power as he leapt forward to slash at his opponent. The Kartana raised a blade-like arm to parry but Harpe's blade sheared through it and continued through the rest of the pokemon's body. The Kartana's expression didn't even changed as its body split in two.[break][break]

"Quick, let's head in," Jack whispered as he reached for Aurelie.

And/or encounter a DYNAMAXED/GIGANTAMAXED POKEMON WITH A DYNAMAX SHIELD that must be downed. Regardless, the Pokemon will perish after its transformation. Investigating its carcass will reveal that it has somehow incorporated Dynite Ore onto its body. Though it is no Regi-titan, one may make macabre parallels.[break][break]

He couldn't help but grin as a burst of red light below him accompanied the appearance of Beau's Toucannon as it appeared from its pokeball. Jack admired his friend's bravery and quick thinking in novel situations such as these.[break][break]

His good mood lessened as his feet gently touched the ground thanks for Mismagius' levitate spell. With a nod of thanks, Jack returned her to her pokeball before taking in the strange surroundings. He was familiar with Power Spots given the central role they played in the Galarian League gym circuit. Or that they used to play, he thought sadly as he remembered the sorry state of modern Galar.[break][break]

"Sounds good to me," Jack said as Beau announced his plan to go left. Jack rather quickly began to suspect the man's intuition may not have been on point. Or perhaps this whole place just sucked. Jack fervently hoped it did not suck as bad as the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]

"Alright there, mate?" he asked, releasing Tatsugiri from his pokeball as Beau attempted to shake the poison from his shoe. "Help 'im out then," he gestured toward the poisonous sludge dripping from Beau's sole.[break][break]

Tatsugiri pulled itself up to its full, unimpressive height before emitted a gentle water pulse that shot through the air toward Beau's feet.[break][break]

"Watch your step," he grinned at his friend before continuing down the lefthand path.[break][break]

Jack was already standing, words of bitter reassurance for DESIREE BLOOMS on his lips when he was telekinetically yanked toward their warden. Relief washed over him that he was not alone with Munkidori, mixed with guilt that other prisoners would suffer whatever cruelty was planned. He glanced through his mask at one of the younger prisoners he didn't know and howard slayte. Bile burned in the back of his throat as Munkidori spoke.[break][break]

Suspicion filled him as he watched the slowly shuffling boxes with a wary eye. Exchanging a grim nod to Howard, Jack's hand trembled as he raised it to where the tera shard was obviously hidden, but it jerked toward another box as poison burned in his veins. In disbelief, he tried again to point at the correct box but, like before, his hand swung away to point at another. His two comrades were having the same issue. Mild annoyance creased Jack's brow until the laughing started.[break][break]

Heat rushed to his face in embarrassment as Munkidori chanted. That embarrassment quickly turned to shame as the mocking continued, familiar voices recognizable in the laughter. Some of those voices were people who were supposed to be his friends.[break][break]

He was stupid, wasn't he? Stupid for trusting Zev Harcourt's friendship, stupid for putting faith in Aurelie Lefevre as a partner, stupid for thinking his parents were ever going to come home, stupid for going back to Galar thinking he could make a difference. It was all so stupid. He was so stupid.[break][break]

Howard's words gouged into him, the man's pain and suffering evident even before his screaming began. Jack wanted to scream too, but Pamplemousse had quietly stepped to the forefront. Where Jack would have extended a comforting hand to his fellow prisoners, Pamplemousse only gazed impassively from behind the mask, mentally taking notes about Munkidori up close so he could report to Diamandis later. Jack wept inside the cell that had been constructed within his mind but Pamplemousse simply watched and waited, silent and unmoved by the spectacle taking place around him.[break][break]
