Can’t say I’m much of a priority, but I bet she was real curious to see what I got up to after I signed the contract.” He speaks with the cynicism of a man who’s old enough to know what he’s talking about.[break][break]
“Your mailman’s not a damn spy. As far as the League knows, you’re just some neurotic guy that helps me out from time to time.” He laughs through the words. “League security’s Paldean cheese. Probably don’t even need to tell you ‘bout priam conrad and Kaname Fujihara being in the science division, out at Ever Grande, for as long as they were.”[break][break]
Somewhere along the way, fatigue slips into his voice. Though he might find the League laughable, he has still chosen to defend it from its enemies – one of whom is Howard. One day, they’ll settle that score. First, death must die.[break][break]
“That feels like twenty years ago for me.” He admits, listening to the thrumming heartbeat of the sea. “Prolly cause it was twenty years ago. You lucked out when you didn’t go to the tomb.”

His everything stopped hurting a week ago. It was only yesterday when, under the care of AQUA’S finest doctors, he was declared fit to serve again. Laying in a hospital bed, hearing about all the good others were doing for the region did nothing but make him want to get up quicker. Whenever he did, the pain would shoot through him. It was like the million stingers of a Nihilego were piercing his flesh all over again.[break][break]
Yet here he is, back where he’s supposed to be. Above him are angels, glittering like stars against a dark sea. Corpses line their path. Judging by their clothes, they were once extraterrestrial invaders, here to chart a new course for their people. Instead, they found their graves. Many of Hoenn’s own died here when the League and Rocket waged another meaningless war.[break][break]
“See, don’t this make coming down here easier?” He asks Howard, his Sancho Panza, the squire helping him tilt at windmills. “No AQUA spies, no Rockets. Just us. Two guys, down here in the dark, fighting the good fight against Eternatus. Arceus knows we’ve got our work cut out for us. Most of the rangers in town don’t know how to get all the way in without getting swarmed by Nihilego or Sharpedo.”

Matias Silph lives. Kyle Lopez is nowhere to be seen. Melody Miro was fighting for her life, alongside four of Hoenn’s best. She stands resplendent, like any champion should. Eva Morales stands like an imagined childhood hero, riding in to save the day with a Pokemon he always saw as a savior.[break][break]
And there he is, sitting in Area Zero. Navy sees it in the newscaster’s eyes: they’re starting to realize what’s going on. It’s his duty to stand up and help. Eddie’s right. They should mount up, fly over, help with the rescue.[break][break]
Yet all he can do is sit there. Leaning back, all the jovial mirth induced by a shared drink does is hold him back. His eyes stare up at nothing, remembering idle dreams shared with Kyle beneath the dyna tree.[break][break]
“…damn it.” He finally says, standing up and chucking a remote clean through the television screen. It sparks, fizzling out to nothing. “Fuck!” He kicks over a table, as if the act of fury will bring back those lost.

When he saw the crossed X on the Metagross’s face, the boy knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he was out of his element. Fully evolved Pokemon like that, back during the Monroe days, were a rare sight. They were the sort of thing reserved for money shot matches at the end of a long League pay-per-view event. Only top level trainers had one Pokemon like that. Metagross, as Navy understood then, were hard to raise.[break][break]
His eyes betrayed none of these thoughts after he took a moment to compose himself. In the span of that moment, they shot wide, betraying immense surprise. When it passed, he was back to playing the part of a cool, composed halfway crook. Looking up at the metallic supercomputer, he nodded and favored it with a grin.[break][break]
“Man. You look like somethin’ off of a champ’s team.” The Metagross, having been given its orders, was too busy carrying them out to make some attempt at conversation. Light gathered around its eyes…[break][break]
…and then, this warehouse did not seem nearly as secure as it had been the moment before. Power, sheer power, the kind of power that veterans of a long war not yet fought would consider small ball, blasted apart the warehouse. While there was some property damage, it seemed to Navy more like they were cracking open an oyster.[break][break]
His ears rang. When Nastasya spoke, he couldn’t hear her over an empty hum. Navy imagined the city outside, the people living their little lives, and how they must have all stopped to stare in silent awe at the explosion.[break][break]
The cops would be there soon. They had only a few minutes, tops. That terrible realization, its implication of consequences that would affect not just him but the brother who depended on him, forced him into action.[break][break]
Stumbling about in the ruined warehouse were some men. Most didn’t have their senses. Caught in the blast, they were too busy processing what had just happened. Some managed to keep a quarter of their wits. One such man rushed to release his own pokeball. A boot kicked the ball from his hand, sending it flying across the floor.[break][break]
Navy’s fist came down upon the man, savagery this stranger didn’t deserve. A few furious blows left the face a ruin. Someone behind him screamed. A gunshot rang out through the sound, a candle before the inferno that Metagross unleashed.[break][break]
Ironsides screeched, flying down just in time to make the bullet ping harmlessly off his armored chassis. Navy wasn’t alone. At his side was the finest sword of their age.[break][break]
“Grab the fuckin’ loot!” He shouted, too hurried to remember his chauvinistic aversion to saying naughty words to a woman.

The proverbial bullet hit my best friend, and now he’s dead.” Somewhere along the way, his breath hitches in his throat. To speak it out loud, to acknowledge again that kyle lopez is dead, makes it feel real. He can’t find his friend in the Borders, nor can anyone seem to find his body.[break][break]
“Why’d you do it?” There is no accusation in the tone, no condemnation. His eyes finally grow alive with an old desire, an urge from another life to understand.

Caught in tomorrow’s glow, Navy’s mind turns to the past. A friendly dreamer mistook his shivering for a chill, covering him in newspapers. While they did nothing to stop the shakes, they gave him a momentary distraction from his inner turmoil.[break][break]
The words on the paper shift, saying nothing of value. There is no keen insight into his predicament. All they do is serve to remind him of what has happened.[break][break]

It never stays the same for long, the way nothing ever stays the same. Eventually, he tires of reading meaningless words and tosses them away, looking up just in time to see someone beautiful passing him by. She’s beautiful the way lava is beautiful, something to be admired in concept rather than experienced for oneself.[break][break]

“Why’d you do it?” His voice is far stronger here than in the waking world, where all he can do is mumble. It cuts through the chaff, aimed right for Elisabeth Fiorelli.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret.” He says conspiratorially, as if he is about to betray the League’s deepest trust. “I don’t…really dig princesses, or slaying dragons. Hell, I think they’re more relatable than most people I meet.” A man knows precisely where he stands with a dragon, and they are creatures who do not ascribe to the lies mankind tells themselves.[break][break]
“Warrior women? That’s where it’s at. That’s what I love ‘bout Melody. She’s damn strong. Katherine Fairburne, remember her? Damn strong.” He says with admiration and a hint of attraction he would never admit while sober, especially while in a committed relationship to another woman. It’s a little secret, shared between brothers after a fight worthy of the word.[break][break]
Yet, just outside, people whisper. They’re arguing among themselves, trying to figure out who’s going to tell him something. It takes away from the reverie. Leaning forward, he waves a hand like a myrmidon receiving a visitor in his tent. A reluctant ranger steps forward.[break][break]

“Uh, sir, check the, check…” Picking up a remote, he turns on a TV placed there to entertain folk on their breaks. Switching through channels, it eventually settles on a news station. There, in big bold words, everything is made plain.[break][break]

A reporter says meaningless drivel, drowned out by the words flashing in front of him. Somewhere in the distance is a massive explosion of flames. It knocks the man speaking to the camera off his feet.[break][break]

When he wakes up beside oscar clayton, his eyes are different. Gone is dull rusted iron. In their place is quiet gray, the eyes of a patient caged wolf. Inside, despair gnaws at the warrior. Thoughts intrude, telling him what he plans to do is foolish. They’re beaten down. Navy clings to the single iota of hope howard slayte has given him like the lifeboat it is.[break][break]
He sits up on his own. Navy can at least do that much. For the first time since kyle lopez’s death, he truly feels himself. The chains sing to him of liberation. When the mochi is given, he eats it ravenously. It feels good, feeling full. More strength returns. Through the fog, he sees his way forward.[break][break]
When the appointed time to work comes, he allows Oscar to lead him. Step by step, they limp towards their workplace. Navy waits quietly. Fezandipiti and the warrior’s eyes meet more than once. Looking down, he returns to quietly polishing the stone.[break][break]
He doesn’t see who lights the first spark. All he knows is that someone lights it, and madness erupts around him. Before he can even swing a punch, John Sullivan’s pulse of life washes away all ailment. Though he will bear scars from this place forevermore, his body feels whole.[break][break]
Chains coil around his right arm. They extend, forming the rough shape of a gun in his hand. A smaller link serves as a trigger.[break][break]
“Just like the old days.” Says the Pale Rider. His chain promises him a return to yesterday. The soul within rejects his heart’s desire here as it has before. For now, he drinks deep of the power. As Fezandipiti tries to charm his fellow prisoners into being its human shields, the rider pulls the trigger.[break][break]
Chains plant them in place, preventing the human shields from playing their role. More are shot at the guards, and more still at Fezandipiti.[break][break]
“Stick close, Oscar.” Surrounded by beasts, he places his faith in his cellmate. “We gotta get to those two.” A curt nod to Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki and freya morningstar as everyone makes for the lift.[break][break]
He doesn’t know what’s waiting for them, but he knows it beats staying here.[break][break]

Tl;dr: Putting this here because it might be too long for my template's notes section. howard slayte gave Navy a pep talk here. Navy wakes up with determination battling against his despair. Bides his time, waiting for the right moment to strike. When it comes, he joins in on the breakout. He sticks near oscar clayton, but tries to find freya morningstar and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki in the ensuing chaos.[break]
Toxic chain ability: Navy's desire to return to Galar and protect it causes his toxic chain to grow and assume the rough shape of his weapon from Goodbye Galar. It allows him to fire other (non-toxic) chains, similar to the move anchor shot.[break]
Navy proceeds to use this to try and chain down those Fezandipiti attempts to charm into being its human shields. Additionally, he takes shots at guards and Fezandipiti itself in an attempt to restrain them.

“…Arceus. I’m so dumb.” He states what kyle lopez would call an evident fact. People are waiting on him. Dewford’s people are waiting on him. oscar clayton waits for him in the waking world, a man to whom his fate is bound.[break][break]
“I’ve sat around too long.” When he sits up, his body feels light. Liberated from the chains, he starts to walk, but not alone. His hand grabs Howard, dragging him along.[break][break]

Free me… Go… Together…

“We’ve gotta do this together.”[break][break]
He starts walking, and then the dream ends.[break][break]
