“…my wife’s as good as dead, Howard.” He accepts a harsh truth. “Melody….she’s great. She’s the best damn woman I know. This chick, the one in Hoenn, she’s not the same person.” How out of place that must sound, given what Howard just said. Navy does not care. He simply keeps talking.[break][break]
“Crystal told me I was a bad dad. I’d ride off at the first sign of trouble. I think…I think it’s cause I just didn’t wanna…sit down and deal with normal people shit.” The intricacies of human interaction, the way lives touch one another, that flow of calamity is too much for a man like him. Better to enjoy the simple pleasures of an open battlefield.[break][break]
“I…I want…” His knuckles ball up into fists.[break][break]
“I want a past that never happened.” Except in dreams, he’s never really free.[break][break]

Dragonslayer rushes forward, Hattori ever in the sword’s shadow. Water shuriken fly from beneath a round shield. Hattori throws, and he retreats. He allows the great sword to bear the brunt of the inevitable retaliation. For now, much of their firepower is focused on Palkia itself, Dragonslayer flying through the air closer and closer to its mark.[break][break]
It cuts up, a sacred sword fulfilling its purpose. There are other dragons loose in Hoenn, and they must all be ready for the day when the true battle is joined.

It regains control of its senses precisely as Mawile jumps up, slamming into the barrier with everything they have. Navy, watching from where he sits atop Voyager, feels his breath catch in his throat.[break][break]
It feels like the battle could go either way. It is just them, two of them, against this monster. How many more would die in a rescue party? There’s no time to think, there’s only time to act. Spurring Voyager on, Navy chooses to have faith.[break][break]
A hairline fracture forms in the barrier, right where Mawile’s iron head made contact. Imperfection spreads along the surface, cascading into a total breakdown. The barrier shatters in a rumbling explosion of colors and sound. Voyager’s body grows hot beneath him. Dragonslayer glows at his side. They charge at the monster.[break][break]
Higher and higher Voyager climbs, streaking like a comet. At last, he launches himself at the monster, slamming into it with everything he has. Their attacks prove enough. Dynergy bursts from the creature. It roars in pain, shrinking until it seems a twin of Tai’s own dragon.[break][break]
“Yahoo!” Navy can’t resist the howl, streaking back down like a burning comet until Voyager and he land, breathless, near Tai. “Holy—I mean, guess that’s that.”[break][break]
Too focused on his ally, Navy doesn’t notice the dragon they just took down collapse, dead seemingly without cause.

Rangers passing by the breakroom give the men queer looks. They whisper among themselves. Having just taken down a mighty foe, Navy is willing to overlook them. The company’s good, and he has it on good authority some of the rangers at the base know how to cook. Arceus is in heaven, the Elite Four is fully staffed for the first time in months, all is as it should be.[break][break]
“You’re a natural, man.” Navy grins, carefree, like it’s all fun and games. He’s forgotten, as he so often does, his own words. This isn’t a game. Their lives are at stake. To think you are invincible is to invite disaster, but damn if it doesn’t feel like the League is invincible right now.[break][break]
“Hell, give it a few years of steady training, maybe you’ll knock Silph out of his spot.” There’s a hint of heat at the mention of MATIAS SILPH, everburning low hatred steeping the waters of Navy’s ire. “Guess we’d have to duke it out to see who’d get to be the fighting guy.”[break][break]
Another drink. He wipes foam from his beard and looks to Eddie.[break][break]
“So how d’you feel ‘bout your first battle, soldier boy?”

Without doubt or second thoughts, Navy takes Montgomery down into the heart of darkness. They reach the bottom of a cave. By human rules, human logic, and human sense, this should be the end of the structure. A rift howls like a black hole at the far end of the chamber, inviting them to step beyond.[break][break]

Walking through the rift, they stand on the bottom of a sea. Sand is kicked up by every step. Clean air fills their lungs, even as water presses against their face. Omnipresent is a pressure on the chest, like they’re diving without proper gear. Navy’s sygna suit takes on the golden sheen of ancient myrmidons, protecting him from the worst of it, but hardly seems enough.[break][break]
His eyes tilt up. Far above them, angels rest like stars in the sky above. Nihilego watch them, weary of a foe they have come to know well in the past year. None draw close. Roland is no stranger to dancing. Swordplay, in the robot’s estimation, has vast overlap. When a partner takes the lead, he knows how to step back. Venus looks beautiful taking center stage, and who is he to stop a beautiful woman from taking the lead? A Gardevoir in the throes of its mega evolution is a frightening thing, its heart spilling out of its chest and bleeding raw power everywhere. Better to stay out of its way, energize the field.[break][break]
Koraidon’s eyes droop, helped along by the blast from the crystals. Drooping turns to slumber, its head slumping forward. Roland and Navy both wonder what the simulated king dreams about. What tales does the mind of a sleeping king hold? From how he thrashes, the dreams turn intense. They are wholly consumed by Venus, and Roland is thankful that is not him.[break][break]
Their show draws to a close too soon, as many battles often do. Taking advantage of the sleeping dragon, their own legendary monster raises it up and lowers it with a sickening crack. Navy wonders if it even knows it’s dead, or if it is lost in devoured nightmares forever.[break][break]
“Quick and brutal,” the sheriff says, “like most fights are. That could’ve gone real bad real quick.”

“A full Elite Four and a champion. Now? My best—the top champion’s gone. Melody’s up top, just Connors and me running around doin’ two men’s work each.” Some part of him wants to ask Gwyar if he’d take one of the empty spots then and there, like he has that authority.[break][break]
“You…ever dealt with something like this?” Navy knows, by logical deduction, he has. There has been at least one great storm in Gwyar’s long life, probably more. To ask directly is to once more invite himself to remember that Kyle is dead, and that all the busywork in the world will not bring him back.

“We never fight alone.” He takes her hand and releases his own trump card. Roland, a chrome Iron Valiant, stands beside Venus. Memories of a fallen Gallade flood the iron warrior’s mind, remembering how timid the sight of a mega evolved Gardevoir once made him. There is no place for tenderness or juvenile shyness on the battlefield.[break][break]
Their great winged king dons the fighting master’s crown. Tera energy gathers around him, coalescing into a coiled fist atop his great feathered plumage. That will be his downfall. With his free hand, Navy takes out his own tera orb. Energy gathers, a rainbow of color circling the orb. This is a trick he seldom gets to play.[break][break]
Roland springs into action, dozens of worlds reflected in his eyes. He flies forward, expecting Venus to have his back. Koraidon meets Koraidon, both of the kings set on a collision course with one another. Roland’s tera blast attacks the dragon’s back, acting out the ancient feud between dragon and warrior.[break][break]
“Let’s kick this guy’s ass and get outta here.”
