He had… completely forgotten about the game.

Whoops.

Was it his fault he was scrambling, looking for food to eat during the past few weeks? He had gotten so busy squirreling away some food to keep during these trying times, he had all but forgotten about the virtual reality thing itself.

Well, time to get back into it, right? Right?

After logging in, he looked around—and found himself in Valora. Wondering how many people had been crowned now, he sighed, before walking up in time to see a character explode into pixelated death.

“Gruesome,” he mumbled, before reaching for the hilt of the sword next and trying his luck.

He was always on the lookout for big and strong Pokémon, and of course the moment he’d gotten wind that there were some of these congregating somewhere he decided to jump on it.

Now, he knew that his Golurk was just a silent, sentient sentinel, but he couldn’t help notice that the other was getting… jealous?

“Are you… Alfons, are you mad?” he began with a chuckle as he placed his left hand reassuringly on the Golurk’s shoulder. “Really, just because we’re going to be adding someone new to the family doesn’t mean you can just up and outright ignore me…”

Shaking his head, he thought back to those weird… number problems… like, if someone had a certain number of Watmel berries and was travelling at the speed of sound to get to some destination, find the value of x and by x that was how fast he was going, well…

Either he was complicating things or it had to be something simpler like “how many would you get if you put 2 eggs in a basket that had 6 more eggs, would you get either 8 eggs total or a freaking giant omelette because you weren’t careful and dropped the basket” but he shook his head, he wasn’t cut out for complicated mathematical equations… ahh, shit, now his head hurt.

Holding up the fingers on his right hand, he drew numbers seemingly to himself, but the general principle was that 3-1=2? Or something? He was number-crunching Pokéballs and had to be careful!

Before he could even blink, he took one out and shrugged before taking aim and lobbing it overhand, watching as it burst open in a flash of red light in an attempt to catch one of the hulking beasts…

They weren’t expecting their next opponent to be something that could seemingly bend reality to its whims. One little spoon wave from the Kadabra was more than enough to send the Golurk into a tizzy, seeing as the Psychic-type knew Kinesis and that was more than enough to screw up the aim of the Shadow Punch tactic.

“Aw, nuts,” he grumbled, before looking over in Remiel’s direction. “You may want to duck or get out of the way,” he advised before knocking exactly three times on the Golurk’s body.

This was the unspoken cue for the titan-like Pokémon to use Earthquake, and a singular stomp of the Golurk’s foot was more than enough to send the entire area into a trembling mess.

“Whoa!” he yowled, hanging on for dear life as the ground trembled beneath the Golurk’s feet. Geez, that attack is way too powerful! No wonder I don’t let him use it that much! He thought out of surprise, before pointing at the Kadabra again.

“Let’s try once again! Shadow Punch!” he continued, hoping that this Kadabra didn’t know Teleport. Instead, a feeble attempt at a Reflect barrier went up, before it was seemingly shattered by the Golurk’s fist slamming into the Kadabra’s face.

Taking aim, he threw a vacant Pokéball at the now-fallen Kadabra.

Now that the Golurk was fully awake, it was time for Alfons to do what he did best—fly. A rumbling shook the area, before the seemingly heavy titan-like Pokémon lifted off slightly from the ground, keeping them afloat.

“No kidding, they got pretty nasty chompers if you ask me,” he remarked, noting that even though there were just two of them, it was more than enough for them to handle. He knew that the weird sheep-like Pokémon weren’t going to return, somewhat, because of the comical way they had exited the scene.

“Aim. Fire! Shadow Punch the other one!” he began, pointing at the smaller one, who had charged forward with Accelerock, ready to attempt to nip the Golurk out of the air.

Quietly, the Golurk raised one of its fists before firing off the rough equivalent of a rocket punch headed toward the slavering Lycanroc. He didn’t need to look further as the dull, thudding noise impacted with the smaller Lycanroc.

Was it down?

He wasn’t going to hold his breath on that.

Okay, so it had honestly been a while since he had last lost himself in a game. What was even better was that they were letting everyone try out the game for themselves! He wondered if he was going to get away with being the ‘silent protagonist’ kind of thing.

Then again, the way he had designed his in-game avatar, he meant it to be lightning-fast, and suited to the Rogue class. Much as he wanted to go and be a Bralwer, he’d had enough practice skirmishing in the real world and therefore wanted to try something else that would catch his fancy.

Once he was done creating his character and going through all the pandering and chatty NPCs, he was warped to the tutorial zone.

Oh, why did he not choose to skip the option?

It was the promise of some decent loot at the end of it was what held him back. He then scanned his inventory and pulled out a cheap-ass looking weapon, a dagger. It was small, but durable.

…shame he wanted to dual-wield but he would need a second weapon for that.

Anyway, off he went to start hammering at the Wobbuffet practice dummies.

So there were rumors of a sword stuck somewhere in a stone in a creepy old cemetery.

Had anyone even succeeded in pulling it out? He could only guess… but a sword like that would make a pretty nice addition to his collection of weapons, at any rate! He didn’t want to be poor forever.

That, and the notion of getting something nice in exchange really got him going. Wondering if he was going to regret this, he followed the last person who had tried to pull out the sword stuck in the rock.

He didn’t know why the person ahead of him disappeared, but…

He would worry about the fine details later. Flexing his arms, he then reached for the hilt and began to pull…

“Wait, what do you mean ‘variant’?” was the first question that dropped from his lips, having spun around to follow where Remiel had gone.

Some of the Wooloo had bounded off from the Golurk at the approach of the unfamiliar human, but there were still a couple of them lounging lazily around the Golurk’s feet. The sound of howling made that peaceful scene evaporate, though.

Quick as lightning, all the remaining Wooloo literally rolled away from the Golurk. Wait, what the hell?

He couldn’t help but guffaw at the sight of the sheep Pokémon just rolling away from his Alfons—the howling was getting louder. At the same time, the automaton Pokémon slowly came to life, rising from the ground out of its peaceful ‘sleep’.

He took this as the cue to approach his partner, and clambered onto the Golurk’s shoulder. “How was your nap?” he asked the dual-type, patting it softly with his right hand. As his Pokémon began to move, the sounds of howling grew louder.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he groaned, before squinting in the distance. Where were they?!

“Oh, hello there,” he greeted with a two-fingered salute as he quickly backed away from the blue-colored dinosaur. “This beauty yours?” he asked a few moments later. Before he could get an answer, there were two Pokémon headed their way—and one of them looked positively angery.

Not angry. Angery.

The way the purple Pokémon’s eyes were pointed down in a frown made him guffaw, before the smaller blue one came charging at the big-ass Tyrantrum—big mistake, indeed.

“Alfons, Shadow Punch!” he pointed at the purple Pokémon. Before anyone else could blink, the gigantic Golurk took aim, before firing off one of its fists towards the small Pokémon.

The Indeedee never saw it coming as the rocket-propelled fist came slamming right into its face, sending it flying. Flying where, he didn’t know—or care at that moment. Once the Golurk’s fist had returned to its stubby arm, he then knocked on the Golurk’s leg.

“Thank Arceus our aiming practice is working,” he praised his silent Pokémon companion.

Okay, so originally the plan was to bust out onto the roof and jump onto the truck, but, well… looks like things had decided to take a turn for the unexpected and they were basically… caught in this unexpected situation.

“What? Hey! I didn’t do nothin’!” he yelped, turning around quickly and looking behind him only to see that they were no longer alone, and that there were other people out to… wait, whoa.

Holy shit, what the fuck?!

Crap, crap, crap! He thought. He had to think, and fast.

Even if there was no other choice… he had to. Quickly flicking a Pokéball out the smashed window, the red burst of light transformed into his Steelix, who then let out a bellowing, intimidating roar before attempting to lash out at whoever tried to attack him with its tail—providing some cover.

Thank the fuck he was small, and fast. Shimmying his way out of the car before it would be crushed, he then began the slow, tortuous climb up his Steelix’s body, before pointing at the truck.

“Move, follow that truck!” he exclaimed once he was at a safe vantage point atop his Pokémon.

» Has a thing for big, strong, powerful Pokémon. Is he compensating for something? Who knows!

» Doesn’t know that his mother isn’t from Johto, but Galar—maiden surname being Devlin.

» Reading and maths comprehension are somewhere on the level of a kid who’d finished grade school, borderline about to enter high school. The only thing he can count to save his ass is, unsurprisingly, money.

» Has a really bad case of ‘sticky fingers’, as that was what he grew up with in order to survive.

» Hilariously though, has quite an eye for mechanic-related work. Specifically, he performs his own tune-up on his prosthetic leg. With his arm he needs a second set of hands to help with the fixing and maintenance.

He was about to zone out and fall asleep when a voice caught him off-guard. Looking over his shoulder, he saw he was no longer alone.

While the other man looked slightly older, it was the notice of the little… teacup that was floating behind him that got his attention.

“You—you have a teacup floating behind you,” he blurted out of surprise, taking the other hand and shaking it in greeting. “Never thought I would get someone else to join me out here… it’s too quiet,” he added as he gestured over his shoulder to where the Golurk was seemingly inert, content to be buried under the loads of fluff and bleating Wooloo that were now trying to lay claim on the seemingly immobile hill that was his Pokémon.

It felt… great, being called by his birth name and not by his code name. Code names were all fine and cool, but sometimes they offered little in the way of anonymity.

Precious little knew his real name so it felt nice to be called that every once in a while.

“You think something’s going to happen out here?” he asked with a shrug, stretching his arms over his head. While he didn’t notice it, the sleeves of the jacket he was wearing slipped down slightly, exposing the prosthetic arm. Rolling his arms around a few times to get the feeling back in them, he looked around once more.

“Seems way too quiet for me…”
