the heat wave had caused several fires over the summer. as it waned at the edge of its stay, holding on for dear life and taking its last few victims before disappearing into fall.

maddonis watched for a moment as one of those last summer fires burned, entranced by the flames as were most people who stood shoulder to shoulder at a barrier outside the scene. several pokemon surrounded the house, which would not be saved, using HYDRO PUMP in a desperate attempt to salvage whatever was left inside.

the fire had been burning for a couple of hours, and maddonis had been sent out to steal pokemon off of distracted onlookers. oh, how he’d fallen on the rungs of life. it would only be temporary that rocket would have reduced him to something as lowly as a pick-pocket.

voices got louder, excitement, and a body was zipped into a bag. as death captivated everyone, maddonis sifted through, smoothly grabbing a few pokeballs out of pockets and off of belts as he passed by, and tossing them into an ellaborately embroidered satchel.

it is no surprise that building fires are common during summer season, especially with this heat wave so uncommon, even for selena who has just arrived in hoenn a few months ago.[break][break]

the journalist has her team interviewing witnesses and bystanders, investigating where did the fire come from. but selena knows this does not always show the bigger picture. the pink-haired lady encircles the blazing building to look for entrances. when she finds one, she summons molech from her back pocket and rides him to reach a safe window from the safer side of the infrastructure. “give me an entrance,” the noctowl air slashes the window where the gym leader jumps into, braving the smoke inside.[break][break]

hisses, noises, cries. there are still living creatures inside that the police couldn’t have known. and now, selena cannot run from them and she have to save them all.[break][break]

maddonis was mostly busy pick-pocketing as the selena was playing hero, but he did he the sound of glass breaking and looked up to see her disappear on the back of a nightowl into the smoking building. brave. he’d never understand do-gooders like this.

as he had been staring, his hand had still been moving of its own accord, and he’d not noticed that someone had been looking. startled, he went to quickly move in the other direction, breaking into a bit of run as he heard commotion errupting behind him. slipping into the woods to the side of the house, the good civilians lost in their pursuit.

from the trees, he continued to watch the fire, his curiosity only piqued at the noises he then realized were eminating from the house. the girl had still not come out, and smoke pushed against the windows, opaque. nothing could be seen.

the thick of the smoke is the only thing keeping selena to do her mission. if she pushes out the smoke, police will come and she will be imprisoned—among all the things she has done illegally just to get the job done, considering all the worse things she have done that breaking into a blazing building.[break][break]

the journalist retrieves the noctowl and calls another pokémon, one of her squirtles, and makes him soak her shoal with water. at least she’s smart enough to let something damp cover her in case things gets worst.[break][break]

“i’m coming! don’t worry. just keep on howling so that i can locate you,” she shouts at the top of her lungs, pertaining to the pokémons still inside the building.[break][break]

he should have turned and headed the other way. he wasn’t sure, honestly, why he didn’t. he didn’t know the woman. if she died, it would be her own fault. maybe he watched for the same reason everyone else did — there wasn’t anything else as interesting happening on the block. perhaps it wasn’t compassion. some people were probably rooting to see another dead body for the sake of recording the event on their phones; entertainment, although these people would never admit it. the world was cruel. but so was he.

he counted his haul — six pokeballs. he’d done a decent job and gotten away with it. if only he could pull away from the show and disappear. it was like good tv. the smoke thickened, blackening the windows. he waited, waiting for her to come out maybe, or perhaps just waiting to feel something.

roars become louder as selena further descends the structure. the sound sounds familiar, herdiers wailing from pain by burn and the suffocation by smoke.[break][break]

“i’ll get you! come out once the fire is gone!” the blastoises from the outside launche another blast of water from the outside. it can only help enough. selena’s squirtle waters the one from the inside to help the herdiers find a safe path towards the trainer.[break][break]

the cries of the pokemon suddenly hit his ears. while still barely audible, the sound of desperation and horror was there. there was a feeling. he felt sad, and then he kicked himself.

suddenly, there was a sound through the trees. it was one of the pokemon’s owners. he burst into the small clearing where maddonis had been standing, watching. he met eyes with the trainer, searching for the daringness he might have to do something. then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pokeball of his own and released herne and mohs. “mohs, light screen!” the carbink produced a blinding white light that shielded the two as the decidueye used shadow sneak to help them get away.

hiding in the woods around a part of the house, he could suddenly see into a window. smoke blew around it, and past the frame he saw it: herdiers, shadowed by flames that were slowly decreasing. had she actually done it?

herdiers jump out of the window, pinkish glow follows them as they slowly descend into the ground. soon after, selena follows with calliope guiding her safe landing. the building is still burning, rangers and firefighters continue to purge the flames, but at least everyone is safe.[break][break]

“hey!” selena observes a man beneath the tree shade, one with pale skin and silvery hair. “you’re not safe out here. fire is spreading.”[break][break]

there was the sound of glass shattering, the ‘woomph’ of smoke rolling out in one massive heap. then, a dog levitated to the ground in a mystical cloud of pink. the others followed close behind, courtesy of the powers of a gardevoir which appeared soon after. maddonis’ attention was grabbed by the pokemon. so elegant.

then, the heroine spotted him. she was still trying to be a do-gooder. she’d have done better, to let him burn, honestly, at least for the sake of the rest of the world. he stared at the brave woman for a second, in a deer-in-the-headlights sort of way, before turning to the woods and disappearing shortly after, with the further health of decidueye's shadow sneak.

with a blink, the man disappears. the shadow sneak gets him out of the woods in no time, leaving selena and the dogs alone by the burning edifice. why the building burned has no explanation yet. is he the one that caused it? is there something he wants to protect? or is there something he wants to take?[break][break]

“go! get yourself treated.” selena tells the herdiers, pushing them to where the crowd is to get them treated. rangers sees their group and immediately tends to them. the journalist follows soon after, looking at his workmates, shaking her head.[break][break]
