Stormy finds it within herself to relax despite the weight on her shoulders. Cait reiterates a promise, albeit modified, and it's enough to soothe her fears, at least temporarily. She leans into the woman willingly as she brings herself out of the doom and gloom Cait had so affectionately called it. Her shoulder is nudged and she leans away, whisking away tears as she comes up with something to say.[break][break]

"Honestly no, not really. Not anyone worth mentioning, anyway."[break][break]

People were so fleeting in terms of relationships these days. [break][break]

"What about you? Found anyone special? You have a glow about you -- I think you have. What's their name?"[break][break]

cait becomes suddenly shy, her gaze shifting away as face warms as she thinks of her recently acquired beau.

"sénon," she answered. "i met him outside of mauville city."

it was an encounter that had happened purely but chance, but she is satisfied that fate had brought them together - no matter how temporary or permanent the arrangement was.

"i assumed it'd be nothing more than a one night stand. a bit of fun and we'd part on good terms. that's how it usually ends up. but he stuck around. i'm hoping it works out in the end."

cait tamped down on her hopes, forcing herself to remain realistic but bright-eyed.

"funny story; i jokingly referred to him as my 'future baby daddy' to fernando."

she gave a snort, her lips wobbling in poorly suppressed amusement.

"that brother of yours thought i was announcing i was pregnant. i never seen someone's head whip around so fast."

Stormy's grin only widens from here on out, and she tilts her head to follow the way Cait's gaze shifts away from hers. [break][break]

"Ohhh-- you definitely do. I knew it."[break][break]

Though her eyes widen at the name. It feels familiar, an uncommon name that she had only ever heard once before, and it matched the face of a man clad in a beautiful suit escorting her across the water back to Kanto.[break][break]

She had only just recently come back from her brief trip, as it had literally just been a last-minute attempt to escape the horrors of the war. A selfish escape, and it hadn't even really helped.[break][break]

"You look happy, and for that I'm happy for you, Cait. I hope this works out for you, too."[break][break]

Stormy's face soon contorts into a snort-giggle to mirror Cait's. She blinks in surprise, eyes wide.[break][break]

"You what? Did he wet himself?"[break][break]

their laughter was mildly contagious, the girls sent into a near giggling fit as they chattered happily over fernando's surprise.

"nearly," she said, jokingly.

she didn't entirely understand why stormy was without constant companionship. the girl was beautiful with a vibrant personality to match, her position of power likely to draw admiration from both civilian and league members alike. but perhaps both she and cait had been simply plagued with bad luck - though 'atrocious' would be a far more fitting word for it.

"there are a lot of eligible bachelors around," she remarked. "i think fernando is the most prominent one among their number. and that man's been riding solo for ages. but i swear - "

her voice lowered, her tone utterly conspiratorial.

" - i swear that he's gay on the low key. and that kim cole-essam 's probably hitting it from the back - if you get my meaning."

cait gave a confident little smirk, sure in her own theory that had developed over the past year.

she sobered a little, her thick and expertly sculpted brows knitted as she discussed the topic.

"it's why you've gotta keep expectations low 'till they can prove otherwise. it... helps with the heartache, if things don't work out."

cait was certain that stormy was familiar with the sensation, the woman's firey heart having been tested for the umpteenth time in recent memory.

"i never really asked what you wanted out of a man, stormy. do you want a husband or children - or a solid combination of both?"

she considered stormy's perspective, mulling over it as she took her sister's desires in consideration. it wasn't surprising that a woman of her standing found the prospect of being a 'lady of the house' to be ultimately unbefitting. it was likely in her nature to be comparatively more active - more ambitious as she left her mark.

cait was traditionally-minded and she'd be the first to admit that. the 'comfortable life with a babe in her arms' was something she'd accept happily. idealistically, she'd have one in each arm if arceus found her worthy of multiple children. and she would select a partner who was just as eager to bring fresh souls into the world - preferably in abundance.

"there's nothing wrong with that," she said. "you're a career-driven woman. now that i really think about it - it's hard to imagine you in that position in the first place."

the woman pondered over stormy's prospects for a brief while; her gaze shifting.

"who knows, maybe you'll be the next champion after bailey steps down? i'm personally interested in claiming a council seat in the distant future. ten or twenty years down the road, actually."

Stormy appears crestfallen, even despite Cait's efforts to comfort and assure her. Her gaze drops below the woman's chin, staring at the shape of her collarbones, the neck of her shirt.[break][break]

"I think that the life I'm meant to lead is a lonely one, Cait. Someone once told me 'It’s better not to fall in love in our line of work.' That, and 'The top is reserved for the tenacious. Not everyone can adjust.'"[break][break]

The mention of the champion seat encourages Stormy to lift her attention back, meeting her sister's lovely green gaze. A smile smile forms, and she nods thoughtfully.[break][break]

"Maybe, in a few years. But seeing your face on the council? That would be something truly incredible, you would do wonders, I think, for this region."[break][break]

cait silently formed the words 'it’s better not to fall in love in our line of work', her features scrunching up to betray her incredulity at the questionable suggestion. love wasn't something that could easily be avoided and ignored - especially if both parties were privy to it.

"but that isn't what you want."

the woman sounded certain, her strange eyes narrowing as she met stormy's gaze.

"you don't want to be alone. and don't pretend like you don't fancy the idea of being married."

she didn't believe that the elite four member deserved to be alone. nor did she believe that her single status would persist for an eternity.

"there's a man out there who wants you. who'll be good for you. who'll stay with you."

a pause.

"you didn't give up - did you? on finding someone?"

She places her head in her hands for a moment, pulling her hair back and away from her face in a moment of exasperation and agitation.[break][break]

Stormy reclines in her seat, shifting so that she might lay her head on Cait's shoulder. She nuzzles into the comfort her best friend provides, desperate for someone to coax her into a false sense of security.[break][break]

"Maybe I'll find that someone at the Mistletoe Matching."[break][break]

She says this sarcastically, but she glances back up at Cait with a curious crease of her brow.[break][break]

"Are you going to that, by the way? Balder asked me to help fund it, it's that charity event for Christmas to help Slateport recover - the whole region, really."[break][break]

Stormy purposefully chooses not to answer the woman's question on whether or not she's given up finding someone.[break][break]

cait struggled to keep the irritation from her face and her tone of voice. she didn't want stormy to think - not even for a moment - that it was directed toward her.

'that man is dead,' she thought, placatingly. 'i should be respectful. but - but - .'

she wanted to allow the conversation to transition into a lighter subject. but - by the gods - did the mere mention of alexander and his past actions rile her to an unfortunate degree.

her question went unanswered - cait switching gears in an instant.

"alexander stone honestly wasn't worth your time, stormy."

she couldn't stop herself - she couldn't hold her tongue. it surged within her depths so abruptly, the expression on her face smoothly transitioning to sweet to openly bitter.

"he had his chance to make you happy and be your husband - but he decided to break off the engagement. he had the rare opportunity to be our champion - but he squandered it."

her voice comes out in a vitriol rush, the woman trembling with a loathing that was beginning to froth and bubble beneath the surface.

"he got what he deserved for what he did to you."

cait unflinchingly met the woman's gaze.

"arceus may forgive him but i refuse to. look what he's doing to you even now. having you actively question your own happiness - your own future."

she'd wrap her arms around stormy, her hug tight - protective - possessive.

"i'm sorry," she said. "i know i already said no more 'doom' and 'gloom'. but i never liked him - not after everything that happened between you two. seeing you in pain hurts, baby girl."

And then the mood changes from her miserable pining and she realizes that she's said something wrong. By mentioning Alexander, she has dashed all hopes of keeping Cait in good spirits. That much is apparent with the way the woman's brow twitches and she struggles to maintain her composure. Something is wrong long before Stormy notices, and when she does, it's too late.[break][break]

The woman sits, stunned, as Cait's rage boils over. Concern is written in a neat crease between Stormy's brows, narrowing further as she struggles to come to an understanding. Cait's bluntness is jarring, and she almost feels as though she's been slapped. For a long time, Stormy remains quiet as she processes her friend's words.[break][break]

She quite literally watches her best friend transform into something unrecognizable and bitter, and she is powerless in the moment to stop her. Cait continues, berating Alexander's very name, leaving Stormy in muted horror and grief.[break][break]

But then Cait surges forward to pull Stormy into her arms, and although she is stiff at first, the familiarity of the hug and the desperation of it allows her to slowly hug her back. Her following apology encourages her to relax further, to take a breath, although by now she is almost undoubtedly crying.[break][break]

"I'm sorry Cait."[break][break]

Overwhelming emotion prevents her from saying more, but the message is clear: [break][break]

She was sorry for making Cait feel so passionately about this, for making her worry, for having chosen a man like him and putting herself down this path of self-doubt and defeat.[break][break]

she held her tongue, cringing inwardly at the fact that she had worsened stormy's mood. yet her words held some semblance of truth. just like the poison which presently ran through her veins - alexander had been naught more than an affliction that had plagued stormy's heart.

'i'll protect you,' she thought.

cait's eyes stung as she felt tremors rock stormy's form, the woman's tears flowing freely.

'i'll try my best to keep you safe.'

but how could she manage such an impressive feat that bordered on impossible as well as improbable? she'd have to mull over it for a period, contemplating stormy's future prospects.

'if i were a man i could - '

cait would have been in a much better position to safeguard her heart; but she was only a woman - only a friend - only a sister. and that bond - while indubitably strong - proved limited.

"it'll be okay."

her salandit stood at a distance among parched grass, considering her mistress and the silph woman; her slim pupils considering.

"everything will work out in the end."
