Her schedule had been cleared in favor of a day all to herself. She had full intention of treating herself to a lovely trail or walk or.. nature adventure. Whatever it is that she'd signed up for, she'd done it months ago. When the notification bell on her phone sounded she had almost forgotten about it entirely.[break][break]

But she'd make quick work of packing her things and bringing along her few friends inclined to spend the better part of an entire day roughing it on Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

It would also, potentially, give her time to visit the memorial sites of those fallen. She felt it was her duty to give them her respects. [break][break]

Avery's hand rises to the soft, slinky creature wrapped around her shoulders. The Furret meeps happily, a noise akin to a purr. Up ahead, a pink Heracross flutters to and fro, exploring up ahead without abandon.[break][break]

The sound of their trail-blazing guide murmurs at the back of her mind, and she turns her attention back to him with wide, attentive eyes.[break][break]

THEME

    "-so i said 'well that's what you get for sticking your hand in a Skwovet hole!'" Zac finished with a laugh. "Speaking of, did you know that after giving birth a mother Skwovet is able to hold her entire brood in those big cheeks of hers? That's where the phrase 'as full as a spring Skwovet' comes from," Zac said, educationally.
The lush path they had been following was a popular walking trail around Mt. Pyre, and drifted slowly right, eventually looping around the base of the mountain to complete the circuit.
    "Whoop, heads up here we're gonna fang a left here," Zac said suddenly, and he took a hard left, shoving his way through the dewy foliage and down the gentle embankment. He grabbed at wet branches as they climbed down the bank, using them as handholds as much as possible.
The ground levelled out, and Zac pushed through a last front of plants to reveal a secluded pond. He held open the break in the foliage and motioned for Avery to walk through. Beyond was a natural pond, a little smaller than a swimming pool but filled with water so deep blue that it was almost indigo. Zac took a deep breath of the faintly aromatic air.
    "Fed by the trickle of this here mighty mountain, this fresh water pond if a beloved spot for many locals," he said, pausing for effect before he turned to give Avery a knowing wink.
    "Local Pokemon that is. That's right! Even many that make the mountain their home are blissfully unaware of this little patch of paradise right under their noses."
There was a pair of plops, following by a soft, harmonious tinkle as two Chimecho un-stuck themselves from the underside of an overhanging tree branch and fluttered down to dip into the waters at the edge of the pond. "Oh wow. Chimecho are solitary hunters, so it's not often you see them together like that. Pretty rare actually, considering the dangers," he said with a knowing nod. "You see, if their ribbonous forms get tangled, they can actually form a knot, in which case it's damn near impossible for them to untie themselves."
The Chimecho drank their fill and took off to find a new place to stick, and Zac cast around the area for any more Pokemon. "If we hang around a moment i'm sure something else will come along. This place is a treasure-trove for rare Pokemon, which is why it's the first stop on my '7 Secrets of Mt. Pyre' tour."

Avery gasps, genuinely awestruck to hear such an interesting tidbit of information. She had quite honestly never noticed any Skwovet hanging around her backyard, so the option of studying them wasn't readily available to her. She is rapt at attention now, following him as if she might really be a lost little Ducklett.[break][break]

He hangs a left and she does too, albeit clumsier than he. She tucks her silvery hair behind her ears, awkwardly tiptoeing her way down the embankment. Although it isn't slippery, it's certainly steeper than anticipated and her bubble of panic is enough to make her tread lightly.[break][break]

And then, she sees it. Zac holds the foliage back and above her head, allowing her a moment to pass underneath his arm and out the other side. Her eyes are wide, shining, as they settle on the small pond. She's in awe, truly.[break][break]

The wink is not missed in the slightest, however, and causes Avery's cheeks to redden in surprise and embarrassment. [break][break]

"W-well, it's certainly beautiful and well-hidden, so I suppose that isn't surprising."[break][break]

Zac directs her attention to the pair of Chimecho and Avery awes out loud. She has her own Chimecho at home, but she hadn't decided to bring her along. Not this time, anyway.[break][break]

"Oh! Look over there! I believe that's a Mawile!"[break][break]

THEME

    "A Mawile!" Zac agreed enthusiastically. The Pokemon had emerged from the bush not long after them, and was fishing for prey. The creature snapped at something in the water with its prominent jaws, but missed the target.
    "Keen eyes you've got there Avery." Zac said, and he motioned for the pair to take a few steps back. "Hard to tell if it's a male or female from here though. A male will probably scatter if we disturb him, but in the winter months the mums can get pretty aggressive, especially if they have little ones."
Zac ducked down behind a log, which obscured most of his large frame. "Now Mawile are pretty damn interesting. You see those big snapping jaws? Well that's not it's face. In fact, the face is on the other side. That's right! just like a Butterfree of Masquerain that emulates a the pattern of eyes to drive off predators, so too does Mawile fake the appearance of a larger, more dangerous creature."
The Mawile snapped again, this time catching something. The pokemon spun around in excitement, picking its prey out of the pond with tiny arms. Its true face had been obscured by chunks of thick hair, but as it turned they could see a pair of big, cute eyes.
"But Mawile went a step too far," Zac continued. "Whereas most Pokemon stop at imitation, this one is the embodiment of 'fake it till you make it'. You see, that mouth is actually a pair of modified horns. Lots of Pokemon have horns, but they are normally solid things for stabbing and goring. Instead, Mawile has a ton of control over those warped, fanged protrusions. It has spent so many years leaning into that disguise that now with just a flex of the scalp muscles it can clap those 'horns' together in a ferocious bite. Isn't the wild?"
There was movement from the bush across the pond, and a second Mawile emerged. It stomped towards the one that had been fishing, walking backwards as it snapped its 'jaws' in a clear display of aggression. "What's say we help out our friend, ay?" Zac asked, and he tossed a pokeball. It was a tremendous throw, and the advancing Mawile let out a squeak of surprise from its true mouth as the ball hit it right on the neck.
    It disappeared into the ball in a flash of red, as the fishing Mawile scampered off into the undergrowth with it's piscine prize.

"Horns?"[break][break]

Avery appears puzzled, and it only occurs to her now that her guide is deep in the belly of misplaced facts that she has, perhaps, been believing everything he was saying almost to a fault. She opens her mouth to question him but ultimately thinks better of it. She had a Chingling at home, and she'd never known Chimecho to get stuck on trees or anything. The Skwovet thing though... she had no idea.[break][break]

Another Mawile appears to contest with the original. She watches in mute surprise and slight anxiety as the two begin to fight, competing over fishing grounds. Fortunately, it appears that Zac was eager to intervene - though honestly a part of her knew that that probably wasn't the most ideal resolution either. Sometimes nature just took its course.[break][break]

But, the Mawile doesn't resist capture, and the other Mawile slinks off to nurse it's bruised ego.[break][break]

"Sir?"[break][break]

The sound of more Pokemon showing up makes her nervous, and she instinctively steps closer to her guide, reaching out to tug on his coat sleeve.[break][break]

"There are a lot of Pokemon here."[break][break]

"Well of course there are! This is the wild Avery!" Zac said with a laugh. "There are Pokemon everywhere, and it's important to remember that in many cases we are the ones intruding."
He motioned for Avery to duck down again as a ground of Nidoran, Nidorino and a solitary Nidoqueen trampled their way down to the water's edge. With a gentle tug, Zac silently indicated that they should keep moving, and he led the way, climbing back up to the path.
Safely away from the family of Nidos, Zac resumed his booming commentary. "Mt. Pyre has barely been touched by humans, really. Even if you could all that construction near the peak, the slopes themselves are untamed," he said, as they followed the trail. The path split, and Zac took an offshoot, leading them up the face of the mountain. "Most of the paths we've taken today have been game trails. Plenty of Pokemon in these parts trample these paths in their natural movements around the mountain. Nidos, Sawsbuck, and especially Gogoat. If you come here in Spring you can hear the males clashing."
His voice faded to rough puffing as he climbed up a particularly rough patch. Zac offered his hand to Avery to help pull her up after him. "Look down from here," Zac said, indicating the view down at the winding paths cut all through the mountainside, "these are all those Pokemon game trails I was telling you about. Isn't that amazing? That's the Second Wonder of Mt Pyre. The natural trails. If you're ever lost follow those trails. They may not lead you back to civilisation, but they will help you find shelter or food."
He turned to resume the hike, but almost slipped back down the mountain as he stood in something slippery. "Whoa!"
Underfoot was a slick patch of...cream? "Huh. Well we can't have you causing any accidents up here little buddy." Zac said to the Alcremie, as he caught it. "I'd better take you back down out of the climbing paths. Probably find you somewhere cooler too..."

"What about you Avery? You from around here? Or do you prefer somewhere cooler?"

Oh.. how could she have possibly forgotten that? Avery's face falls a bit at her own brief bout of selfish thought - of course there would be plenty of Pokemon here, this was where they lived and congregated. More than likely, it was them who were trespassing.[break][break]

She hesitates out of obliviousness when he gestures for her to crouch down, but she does eventually when she sees him doing it, and she follows his line of sight to spot the Nidoran. There is a small, meek smile on her face, though she doesn't dare breathe a word for fear she might startle the wild Pokemon.[break][break]

Fortunately, Zac leads her up and out of the dip in the ravine they had stumbled upon and back to the beaten path.[break][break]

Unfortunately, it seems that the path they now face includes a steeper than expected incline. She takes a deep breath, already feeling the rosiness of exertion heat up her pale cheeks. The Furret around her neck slips from her shoulders to the ground to race off ahead. Her Heracross joins up with the pink Pokemon, eager to continue their exploration.[break][break]

She takes the mans hand when it is offered, fitting her much smaller palm into his and holding fast so that she could help pull herself along - not that that was at all necessary.[break][break]

But she gasps in surprise, just as she opens her mouth to comment on how absolutely beautiful the game trails are that he has pointed out. Just beneath the sole of his boots is a stepped-upon Alcremie. She winces, relieved when the tour guide opts to capture him, and she prays that not a lot of damage had been done.[break][break]

She wipes sweat from her brow and pants a bit as they come to a stop, and she moves to catch her breath before responding to his question.[break][break]

Her hand rises to her collar, expecting to find the fluffy body of her Furret. It had slipped her mind that the Pokemon had run off to play, and.. her fingers brush warm scales. All of the colour washes out of her face and her heart drops to her knees. [break][break]

"W-what is--"[break][break]

The Ekans that has taken her Furret's place sticks its tongue out, rapidly flicking the tip against the edge of her jaw. It seems to have taken a liking to her bare shoulders and the sweet scent she seems to wear as a natural perfume. Avery, however, does not look so thrilled.[break][break]

THEME

     The pair looked down at the paths worn into Mt Pyre's verdant slopes. Game trails wove between copses of trees, disappearing for long stretches as they wound through the sections of forest of shrub before reappearing, streaking along in trudged trails of worn stone and grasses.
    "Oh-- I.. I used to live in Fortree city, but I moved to Lilycove with my grandparents when they moved their business to the big city. I'm used to hiking, mostly. Not anything like this though, Fortree is a lot.. more trees."
    "Too many trees for me. I like being able to see the dirt. And those tree huts are not for me," Zac said with an uncomfortable laugh. "Anything that high up is outside of my area of expertise. I've got decades of time logged on the ground. Stick to what you know, right?"
  Avery made a noise of confusion next to him, but Zac was distracted. An Absol had snuck up on him and was standing stock still just starting, its alabaster coat split only by charcoal face, horn and tail. No, it hadn't snuck up on him, it had appeared there. Or maybe it had always existed on the mountain.
Zac took a step closer, and something compelled him to reach out, to grasp the creature's horn. It was curious. Last week he had been traumatised by a vision granted by this prophet of disaster, and now another had made its presence known to him. Was it the same one? Surely not. Had the other one marked him in some way? Somehow that was even scarier.
  "Hey there buddy," Zac said, in his thick accent. He reached out for the horn, drawn to it like a blade to a magnet. His hand reached the sickle-shaped horn, fingers wrapping around it.
  No visions came. The Absol looked up at Zac with worryingly human eyes, and for a minute they were Priam's eyes. Heartless and cruel, with murder in their depths. Zac pulled his hand away and took a step back. He looked down at his hand. It had been marked with a black slash, as if he had been gripping charcoal instead of bone.
    "You, uh, marked me...What..." the questions died on his lips as the creature took two quick steps and bounded away across the mountain.
    What are you? What do you want? What does this mean?
The only anchor among the slew of questions was the guarantee that the creature would return.
