MARCH UPDATE

Every so often, a fundraiser would be held in the Slateport Park. “Battle for Support” was its name, meant to raise money for children with disabilities. There were a number of arenas in the park, and all were being used for the fundraiser. They were modest setups: concrete ground built to withstand Pokemon attacks, painted over so the participants knew where to stand.

Hideo had quickly found himself as a center of attention: for a fundraiser about raising money for children with disabilities, a blind trainer participating was like a shiny Pokemon in a beauty contest, and he was drawing in money pretty quickly. Hideo was just glad to be a part of it, and so he could get used to battling with his new Pokemon, but he didn’t mind the crowds’ adoration.

He’d get a short break in-between fights, to get a breather and so he could choose what Pokemon he’d be using next. He’d only have to choose one - they were simple 1v1 battles, so they could switch between trainers quickly. Also helped keep things exciting.

But once again, it was Hideo’s turn to battle. He was called up to the arena, his Pokemon of choice already out and walking with him; Speedster, his Blitzle trotted along, full of confidence and vigor, ready for whatever came next.

With a little help, Hideo took his spot, his Pokemon standing by him. It was just a matter of waiting for his opponent to take their spot, and for the announcer to tell them when to start.

The city of Slateport was bustling with life as citizens and trainers alike gathered towards the park's plaza for the day-long event, Battle for Survival. It was set right in the center of Upper Slateport, which meant that most of the residents were well-dressed and well-off, their pockets full with money to give. Unlike Hideo, who had found himself at the center of attention, Jayden's presence was nearly non-existant — which, honestly, was a good thing and entirely the reason that he'd been able to sneak into the venue at all. He wore a long coat and a tie, which had been borrowed, masquerading in perfectly with the aristrocrats that clapped and applauded as the two challengers in the center of the arena went off to battle.

[break][break] Upon some intel received from Cillian Quinn , the Team Rocket grunt had been slid into the ranks of the competition. He had done fairly well, but not too well — that would have drawn too much attention. It was thanks to the likes of people like Hideo Kino that the gambit worked — everyone liked a good underdog, and a blind kid battling could not have been more perfect. Had Jayden not known any better, he would have wondered if the young boy was a mole like himself too.

[break][break] The words of the announcer jerked the twenty-four year old to his senses and he sat up, heading up the staircase to the center of the area. Concrete ground was build to withstand the pokemon attacks, but also fencing was built around the set-up as well, so that they could have a proper audience. Gloved hands at his side, Jayden was quiet as he approached the arena and took his spot. His violet-lit eyes looked upon the small child across the arena from him, his Blitzle clambering excitedly and proudly at his side. A whisp of cold air whipped around Jayden as his Shuppet released itself out of it's pokeball, zipping around his trainer and towards the center of the arena.

[break][break] Jayden opened his mouth — and then closed it. Velos had already taken it upon himself to attack, throwing a shadow ball directly at the Blitzle just one second after the announcer had directed them to begin.

The little Blitzle made his way to the center of the arena, brimming with energy and confidence. He looked at the opposing trainer and his Shuppet, ready to take whatever they could give.

Hideo had his Pokedex in hand, quickly identifying his opponent’s Pokemon for him. “I hope we have a good match!” he said, waving to his opponent after putting his Pokedex back in his pocket. No reason not to be polite.

Now it was up to the announcer to begin. There was a tense hush as everyone was waiting for the proverbial pistol shot.

“Now - begin!”

Before Hideo could even shout an order, he could hear his opponent’s Pokemon charging an attack. Seemed like he wasn’t going to be holding back. Good. “Speedster, quick! Get out of the-”

But the ball was faster than he could talk, and it hit his Blitzle right in the side. The little horse squealed in pain, pushed back from the attack - but it brought a look of determination to his face. He was ready to fight back.

“Don’t let’em get away with that! Charge right in, and let’em have it!”

The Blitzle’s body was outlined in red, quickly bursting into a flame. He charged forth, intending to slam straight into the Shuppet.

Curiously, Jayden watched as the other pulled out a pokedex to identify the pokemon. Oh, so that's how he does it. It made sense, after all. It wasn't like Hideo Kino was a pokemon, and without sight to help him, there was little he could do with his own senses to identify who their opponent was.

[break][break] "Hi, " he said in response to the other's greeting, though his words were noticeably softer and more full of indifference than the other's eager tone. With a dip of his head, he added, "Good luck to you too."

[break][break] There was little time for idle chit-chat. The battle began, and Veles was quick to act. The Shuppet raced through the air, his velvety cape barely visible as he phased forward. Something like a cackle echoed through the air, but it was not even louder than a whisper, as the shadow ball crashed into the Blitzle's side.

[break][break] Flames licked the zebra's form as he obeyed his trainer and moved into a fire-attack. It crashed directly into the ghost-type and though it did adequate damage, rather than wince with pain, Veles felt thrill chase through him as the painful sensation splashed him. Blue flames licked the bottom of his skirt in a will-o-wisp, creating sphered of blue fire that were raised around the pokemon like a prison. A sharp, jagged grin sliced his face open as he raised the spheres and tossed them at the Blitzle in close range, attempting to encase the pokemon in it's flames.

Hideo could hear Speedster make a solid hit against the Shuppet. “Nice one!” the boy cheered on, earning a satisfied smile from the little Blitzle. His didn’t fight much - heck, the last time he used this attack, it was for delivering food - but he always made sure to do 100% at everything.

And that attack was for more than just causing damage; it was subtle at the moment, but the Blitzle was moving a little faster. It wouldn’t make a big difference yet, but every little advantage mattered.

It was important that he move fast, because the Shuppet retaliated fairly quickly, getting in close with an attack. Hideo could hear the Shuppet preparing something, and this time, he was ready for it. “Speedster, get out of the way!” Hideo ordered, as if his Bliztle wasn’t already doing that.

The little horse dashed to the side, avoiding being trapped within the attack - but the flames still came down on him, burning his back. He grunted, but still had his freedom.

But as far as Hideo knew, he’d just taken another attack. “Get’em back for that, Speedster! Shock ‘em real close!”

His Pokemon nodded, his body quickly covered in crackling Sparks of electricity. He charged forward, intending to tackle and shock the Shuppet.

As the flames encased the Blitzle faded away, Jayden's eyes grew sharp underneath the lights of the arena. The flame charge had done more than injure — it was subtle, yet if you paid attention, you would notice it.

[break][break] "Veles," Jayden said, though his voice was soft as it carried on with the wind. "Be careful — he's fast."

[break][break] The Shuppet might have scoffed - but Jayden couldn't be sure, as the ghost type's back was to him. Either way, the flames that lit up the pokemon's skirt suddenly consumed him. Flares of blue were shot towards the Blitzle. But perhaps as an ode to Jayden's earlier warning, the Blitzle had nearly escaped the worst of it. He slid out of the center and only got caught on the edge of the flames.

[break][break] Veles' eyes flashed with annoyance. He did not like anything that was less than perfect.

[break][break] "Try another Shadow Ball!" Jayden called. It had worked once before, after all.

[break][break] As it seemed, however, the Shuppet had other things in mind.

[break][break] The zebra's body crackled with light as he obeyed his trainer and headed for him in a tackle, but even with his increased speed, he was not fast enough. In a blip of light, Veles disappeared with PHANTOM FORCE to dodge the attack and then reappeared a second later behind the Blitzle, ready to bombard him with a swipe of a giant, shadowy arm.

It hadn’t been the cleanest dodge; though he was free, Speedster still took the burn from the Will-o-Wisp, the pain lingering on his back. But something as small as a burn wasn’t going to stop him.

When his opponent’s trainer ordered an attack, Speedster was on guard; he’d taken a Shadow Ball already, and was ready to interrupt him before he could get it off.

Which was why he was stunned that the Shuppet just disappeared, the electricity around Speedster’s body dissipating. He looked to the sides, looking for where his opponent had gone - and earned a surprise arm slapping him on the side.

Were it any other trainer, they probably could have warned the Blitzle of the surprise attack. But unfortunately, Hideo was just as confused by what happened as his Pokemon, hearing things that definitely didn’t sound like the Shadow Ball from before. He didn't even know their opponent teleported until he heard it smacking his Blitzle.

“Well if that’s how you’re gonna play…” the boy muttered to himself.

“Quick, catch him before he gets away with a Discharge!” Speedster complied, electricity once again building up quickly. But this time, rather than surround him, blots of electricity shot out around him. Hideo, Jayden, and any onlookers would be too far away to reach, but the Shuppet would certainly be in range.

A sigh escaped him.

[break][break] Of course, it wasn't like he could expect Veles to properly obey him. It wasn't like the Shuppet had ever been the obeying type. It came to no surprise to the Team Rocket grunt when the ghost in front of him disappeared in a flicker of light, doing perhaps the opposite of the requested attack. Instead of shooting a Shadow Ball at the other, he counter-acted with a vengeful Phantom Force, which apparently had the desired effect of catching the zebra off guard.

[break][break] Jayden glanced at his opponent, Hideo Kino. He hoped the boy wouldn't be too mad.

[break][break] Before the dark-haired boy could utter an apology, however, it appeared that the other was just as quick as Veles on the rebuttal. Obeying his trainer, the Blitzle crackled with powerful, bright light. The flash made Jayden wince, and throw his arm up, though it was for naught, since the sparks landed just shy of his shoes.

[break][break] Pulling his arm away, he saw Veles floating mid-air. Pain surged in his eyes as electricity crackled along his ghost-like visage, sparks still dancing upon his ripped skirt. However, instead of being discouraged by the pain, it seemed to be the opposite. The Shuppet's eyes glowed with malice as a vengeful grin sliced his face right open. While the two were still in close-range, par for par, he released HEX, the sphere of black energy growing tenfold between them. Energy gathered among the Shuppet, making him flicker a malicious purple, before the attack surged forward with a blast of energy.

[break][break] It was terrifying. Jayden looked away.

The Discharge spread out, bolts of electricity reaching throughout the arena. Speedster was careful enough to not strike anyone else - though a few got too close for comfort. Hideo had no doubt he’d be safe, but a few bolts did get startling close to him, and he definitely would have gotten uncomfortable had he known the same happened for his opponent.

But to his fortune, the only one that got hurt by it was the Shuppet. Speedster flashed a grin, satisfied with his retaliation, and ready to deliver more. And to nobody’s surprise, his opponent attacked back.

Hideo noticed the other trainer hadn’t ordered an attack, but he heard something charging up. It didn’t sound like anything his Blitzle could do, and it didn’t sound like something the Shuppet used before.

Speedster had already taken a few hits. It wouldn’t be good if he took any more. “Dodge that, fast!”

His Pokemon had no objection, the burning pain still lingering on his back. His body relaxed for just a moment, almost looking calm, even as the Hex sphere grew in size.

And once the blast of energy was fired, Speedster just...disappeared. Or so it would seem to the naked eye. Such was the strength of his Agility: Speedster had completely avoided the attack through sheer speed. By the time the attack ran its course, he was back in place, as if nothing had happened.

As it turned, Jayden didn't have to.

[break][break] Veles' used Hex, and the massive sphere that form as a result of that was shot out towards the Blitzle, without any consideration for who - or what - it might destroy in it's path. However, the zebra disappeared in a flash of light as he used Agility to his advantage, avoiding the attack by nothing more than sheer speed.

[break][break] The dark-haired boy blinked, as if impressed, and then said, "Good job."

[break][break] To an ordinary looker, it might have appeared as words of encouragement towards his own pokemon. Even if the attack had not hit, it was still impressive. However, both Veles and Jayden knew better. The boy was encouraging their opponent.

[break][break] Jayden could have been wrong, but he thought there was something radiating from his Shuppet, perhaps even darker than before. He blinked, and it was gone.

[break][break] Clearing his throat, the boy said, "C'mon, you can get him! Use Shadow Sneak!"

[break][break] It was a disadvantage, to say those words outloud, but luckily Veles was one step ahead of his trainer. He was already moving, dark shadows leaking into the ground and extending outwards in both directions from where he was floating. Then the Shuppet dipped into the ground, disappearing for a moment, before suddenly re-appearing at the Blitzle's side, aiming to slash him with SHADOW SNEAK.
